THR Fairydell's recovery thread

@Fairydell
8 days is no time at all... your body is in recovery & needs all the energy that you have... it is such a big drain.. patience is such a big thing in the recovery process... I’m the worlds worst but it won’t be rushed...you need to pamper yourself... it will get better.
I had staples & there was definitely less ‘pulling & twanging’ once they were out... also of course the feeling that a milestone had been reached...

Does anyone else get pins and needles down the front of the leg below the knee. I have had them since day one of the op. Last night they were so bad that I couldn't even stand the sheet against my skin.

Yes, @Fairydell . That's what my husband and I call my shin splint muscle. It feels absolutely raw at times. I'm guessing nerves waking up :shrug:

I always find getting stitches or staples out feels like a boost myself. Do be kind to yourself, we are in very early days still and for any surgery still in the worst of it for 2 weeks following any anesthetic. It might be a good time to accept the offer of a place to shower. That might help boost you up too.
:flwrysmile:

Definitely... I cannot have any covers on my legs at all because of those feelings... again it’s the body recovering from the before & after stresses... it took a few weeks to go off as I remember from my last THR...

I had the same - zips, zaps and hypersensitivity...
Hope your weekend is restful and you can manage some restorative sleep

Thanks @Mojo333 Now that I am back on the stronger painkillers I am managing to sleep in two hourly bursts. I feel refreshed and comfortable... ish….. I might put my leg brace on tomorrow and try a little walk out with the hubby if the weather is decent. Hope you have a comfortable weekend. x

I know it's hard to feel so infirmed and dependant...but truly temporary and after all the nights you were miserable ...man, I had two years of miserable nights...this will come to an end.
We are rooting for you friend.

What kind of brace are you wearing?

Buckle up @Fairydell I'm not saying it's going to be a bumpy ride, but it's going to be a ride.
You are in the infancy of your recovery at only 9 days post op. I'm sure you have been suffering a long time as the road to THR can be a lengthy painful one. Depending upon what condition you came to the party in may be a determining factor in the length of your recovery. It takes a full year even up to 2-2 1/2 yrs for some I've heard for complete healing to take place, so you're in for a ride. Settle back and enjoy the view. :)

Try snuggling under a warm blanket while you're icing and see if it helps any.
I hope you can squeeze in another nap today. Wishing you comfort and a peaceful evening!

Hi @Fairydell, I'm a few days ahead of you and just wanted to let you know I've been feeling better each day. But I don't do hardly anything except walking and pottering in the kitchen (we live in an old house with a 'dog-leg' staircase with no banister so I've not even thought about going upstairs yet) I'm lucky we have a downstairs loo and an ajustable bed in one of the reception rooms that had been used for both my mother in law when she lived with us and for the times my husband has been ill over the last few years. This has certainly earned its keep and a memory foam topper certainly helps my sore bum️. Hope you are soon feeling better,
Christine

@Mojo333 It is a leg brace that has been loaned to me by the hospital. I will get Tony to take a photo next time I put it on. It stops my knee from collapsing when I stand up as I have very little sensation below the knee... other than scalding hot ants tap dancing on it with pins on their feet.
`
@Layla I am resting loads and getting through my stash of library books. To be honest I just don't feel up to doing a great deal. I have an ice pack on the bad side and a hot water bottle on the good side at the moment and it feels like heaven. I would not have believed that ice could feel so good.

@mollymum The only exercise I am getting at the moment is a wander around the house and garden and several trips up the stairs to the bathroom. Ice is my best friend and I can't wait to stick it in a glass with some Violet gin instead of sitting on it.

Have a great weekend everyone x

You do have quite a descriptive way of putting things:dubious:
Poor fairydell.
Lots of sympathy for these first days.
I have mentioned several times before...but I told my OS the reason he made my first post-op appointment for ten days out was so I might quit hating on him by then.:sigh:
Keep up the mantra...all temporary!
Healing mojo coming your way:console2:

Night were much worse for me. It's so important to stay ahead of the pain. I used to wake up when I needed a painkiller, and then have to ice for about a half hour. Usually people see a big difference after the first month.

I think it's good to have a good cry. It releases negative energy. Stress and fear make your pain increase. It's a long recovery period, but so worth it, in the end.

I had another horrible night last night.. I wish those ants would practice tap dancing on someone else's leg. I couldn't stand the sheet on my leg as everything that even brushes my leg has it jangling and screaming. The pain killers did absolutely nothing for me except make me light headed.
Today we drove to a local community centre car park so that I could have a little walk. I am astonished how few steps I managed to walk before we had to turn around and head back to the car. It can't have been much more than 100 yards.. We are rigging a little side table over my leg in bed tonight to keep all the weight of the bedding off me... it's worth a try and I might manage some sleep

Part of my reluctance to head outside. By the time I get out of the house and down the steps I will likely be ready to come back in. I know I have a couple neighbours who would be behind their net curtains too!
I hope your rig up with the blankets helps!

@Carriemay60 I had never consider our driveway to be steep...until today when I had to limp up it to climb into the car... and then back down the drive when we came back... I used to consider a seven mile walk to be a pleasant stroll out with my friend. Now 100 yards feels like the London Marathon

Inclines & declines are hard work for sure. All it does now is Tire us out because walking with a good gait would be next to impossible on a incline/decline this early on. I can hardly wait until I can get lost on a walk again.
@Fairydell

@Fairydell so sorry you are having such a rough time. Hoping your little side table rigging helps and you get some good sleep tonight. Nothing like being miserable and then sleep deprived.:tiredwheel:

@Fairydell
Another option, instead of the little table over the bed is cling film. I never tried cling film on my hip scars so I'm not sure how easy it would be to get in place, but it works really well for the knee.
The suggestion is to put a piece of kitchen towel on first and then wrap the cling film around it. It stops that sensitive feeling.
I hope the ants finish their dancing soon.
