THR Fairydell's recovery thread

Hi @SE Florida I didn't sleep too well but that isn't unusual for me. I think I left it a bit too long between pain meds... I won't make that mistake again. Today, I am up and about doing gentle exercise and then taking good long rests. The dead leg is a darn nuisance and I think I would be able to do a bit more if I had some feeling in it. It's early days and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is only temporary.

I'm just checking up...and I've given me an upset for this evening...
Don't like to see my dear friend in distress!
Forget your noncomplient leg...I am sure it'll come around. Very early days.
However I Do Not like to hear of other complications.
Please try your best not to stress too badly...and please let us know what they think.
Prayers and hugs, Jodi

Good morning hippy buddies. I'm still waiting to hear from the hospital. I am to have a scan on my leg and chest to check for clots. In the meantime they are treating me with clot busting medication as a precaution. I was just wondering what your bruising is like. Mine is pretty spectacular and is gradually spreading up my back and down my leg... is this normal?

Oh my stars...now That's a bruise.
My bruising wasn't quite that extensive but different approach and I had drain tubes so don't know if that helped.
Glad they are treating you for clots but I'm guessing in doing so, that is going to cause the bleeding to be a bit more in there?
I've seen on the forum that looked equally wicked...some worse.
I'm also thinking it is going into back a bit because of lying down.
@Josephine has seen Many ...let's see if she thinks the clot preventives are partially responsible.

I hope they clear you so you can relax.
The body is an amazing healer!

I’ve just spoken to a friend of mine who had his THR 6 days ago & he is black & blue from his
groin down to his knee & yet i’ve minimal bruising this time... My last THR I had so much bruising & swelling... think it’s just how much you are manhandled or the approach.
Hope all goes well with your blood clot tests today & you get the all clear.....
Thinking of you xxx

Good morning @Fairydell so good to see you on here. Hopefully you'll get all good reports on your tests. I've had no bruising myself but after reading what @Mojo333 posted it made me think. My 83 year old mother is on a prescription blood thinner and whenever she gets the smallest bump, the bruising is horrible and last for weeks on end. Also after looking at the thread here called "Hippie Scars...." some of those pics show tremendous bruising. Overall your bruising looks bad but probably normal for everything you've been through. Fortunately bruising isn't permanent, only the incision scar!

Hoping you have a good day!

good luck with the tests Fairydell! I was lucky in that I had very little bruising but was icing from day 1 in the hospital or maybe day 2. The physio totally approved of icing. The consultant didn't. I had other bad buttock pain and moving was hard the first few days. Hope your tests are negative but at least, if there is an issue, it has been spotted early. Take care x

Happy to see you @Fairydell , I got a bit worried when you didn't show up yesterday after your brief morning check in.
You are all kinds of pretty colours indeed! I did bruise very easily 4 and 5 years ago while on blood thinners. Eg., normally, you discover some little tender bruise on your shin and wonder where the devil it came from. When on bloodthinners, those bruises could look like I'd been in a car crash! Hopefully you've had a call today for that scan so your mind can be put to rest. I am only seeing slight skin hue changes so far despite feeling very bruised. Not sure if that means I am not going to bruise too badly or if it's still really deep. In the picture your gauze looks much longer than mine but like Sarah, my rear view is not so great right now. I spent less time looking at my tush in the mirror when I was 19 than now! LOL

Isn't funny that what we view as awful, scary, creepy as women, guys view as cool and macho.
They are okay with big, nasty ugly bruises, cuts and scars. The bigger the better it seems.
While we're staring in the mirror, whimpering and wondering if we'll ever be normal again.
You gotta laugh :heehee:

I found that after this surgery I bruised in other areas very easily. This went on for years. The slightest bump would result is a huge, purple, spreading bruise. My mother was that way as she got older. I don't know why. She did had several surgeries and falls. She was also on a lot of medication.

Hoping things are going better for you today. The blood thinners will cause more spectacular bruising. My bruising with pinning surgery was much worse, and I had to take blood thinners for possible clot. Hoping you get good news on your lungs today. Wishing you a steady path towards healing my friend. Sending prayers. ❤️

It's my one week anniversary today. This time last week I was in the operating theatre. Just been reading about 'log leg' on a few posts. It perfectly describes my leg and I was worrying so much that it was all to do with my dead leg. Thank goodness for this forum. It has alleviated so many of my worries. I think perhaps I have turned a corner today with my healing and am almost ready for a little stroll out in the street. I plan to leave that another day or two and won't go very far at first. Physio said I should wear the leg brace when I go outside and I will do that until I go and see her next week. I am walking with two crutches but suddenly realised yesterday that I was only walking with one. I leave a spare one at the top of the stairs so that I don't have to carry it up with me when I need the bathroom. When I reached the top I just set off without picking it up. I think if I could trust that my leg wouldn't give way I would possibly be able to manage with one. Don't worry hippy buddies, I am not daft enough to try that just yet as it is still very early days. Last night we soaked a cloth in Witch hazel and applied it to the bruises on my leg for about twenty minutes. We did it again this morning and will continue for a few days to see if we notice it shifting the bruising any quicker.

Hi @Fairydell
After your first issues you really seem to be on the up now. It's a great but scary feeling when you realise you have set off without your crutch isn't it?
I think that's a good sign that things are coming together but I do agree with you that you should still be using both crutches at the moment, at least until you see the physio again.
Arnica is also supposed to be good for bruises but to be honest I just let my bruises follow their normal course. I was fairly bruise free for the hips but the knee was very different. I did see your bruise pic and it looked quite spectacular.
It's lovely weather here again today. I hope it's nice where you are.
Off to see the physio and OS this afternoon.
