THR Fairydell's recovery thread

The first days are scary and unnerving.
Is this normal? Is this permanent?
I was a wreck.
Glad you realise this truly is a process...with ups and downs...but you will get through this and be so much better for it.
Hope today is a Good Day, friend.:roseshwr:

Oh woe is me... my rear end is so sore this evening. I can't sit on it as everything tugs and screams. The scar area feels really cruel tonight. I have been fine all day... well as fine as can be expected. I had to resort to strong painkillers and they are just starting to kick in now. I am icing and elevating for all I am worth.

Oh I am sorry. A sore bum is awful especially when it is somehow involved in every position we are allowed to be in. I am sitting on a barely cool gel ice pack which seems to be relieving some of my pressure. Also sit on ice a lot.

I Do know!
This is the tough stuff.
Do take your meds on schedule until waiting for "needing" them.
Is important to stay ahead of this so you can stay restful and/or stay more comfortably mobile.
Lot of ups and downs in this, dear friend, physically and mentally.
No points for less meds so try to go with the flow this next week!
You know I'm happy for you to have this on the mend!:ok:

I have had the most appallingly painful night. My poor sore botty was agony and the lower part of my leg felt as though I was being stabbed with millions of boiling hot pins. I am feeling very weepy and sorry for myself today which isn't like me at all.

Not surprising you are feeling weepy @Fairydell... pain & lack of much needed sleep are not a good combination...
Try & have a very relaxed day & catch up on your sleep... maybe in a chair so your botty can recover ... both my botty & heels got very sore the first week or so from back sleeping... however it did ease off... hope yours does too xx

I hate that you are having a bad day.
It's alot to process...and the meds can put us out of ourselves too.
Hope you have been icing as much as possible.
A few weeks time can make all the difference so try to hang in there.

I can feel sorry for you so you can get a break:console2:

I was on morphine for at least three weeks after the op and also had Posterior. What pain management are you on? You may need to get this reviewed. My GP did this for me on the telephone after I requested a callback and then got the prescription sent to the pharmacist. Things got a lot better after the first month. I think the NHS underplays how painful this can be. Some people sail through the recovery but others are less lucky. Mine was not a bed of roses either. I hope you feel better soon

You are not alone @Fairydell ❤️ I have had several weepy moments even this week. Like you, I’m not at all given to crying. The sore bum is still with me. I love the gel pack ice. Use one barely frozen to put under by back side. Our poor bodies have to either lay or sit, so the bum gets the worst of it.

As for sleep, I’ve come to terms with getting sleep when I can. Last night I went to bed at 8:00. Slept well until 1:30. Back sleeping is just not my thing, so when my body starts screaming. I move. Naps are essential.

I’m so sorry about your knee and bruising. If you like bananas they are full of potassium. I’m taking a daily magnesium now that helps with lots of things, but general relaxation has been a big win. Just sending love this morning and empathy for all you are going through. I hope you turn the corner soon and see light at the end of the tunnel. ❤️

Whstvpain management are you on? You may need to get this reviewed.

I have been given plenty of pain medication but have managed with paracetamol for a couple of days. I took codeine yesterday and then resorted to the very strong 'breakthrough pain' tablets but may have left it too late. I also think I may have over iced and got cold.

I suspect you may have too.

Please don't try to just "manage" right now. It's so hard to get the pain under control once it gets started.
You are only eight days from major surgery.

That is why I asked the question. You do really need to take the meds ahead of the pain. Josephine has a very good chart for this. You are not long out of surgery so may need something stronger...

Fairydell.. so very sorry to hear this! I had surgery same day and I’m also having to put ice/pillow under my “ gluteus Maximus “... wry sore. I have to sleep with a body pillow between my legs and sometimes I’m getting those cramps that could shoot me to the ceiling. I do find that if I have the pillow between my legs I can slowly roll onto my non operated side and it’s much less pressure on butt.... I echo the sentiments of those above- we all recover at our own time table-take your medication and rest. You’re GOING to recuperate from this and we’re here for you my hippie friend.

Oh Fairydell, I feel so sad for you! You have certainly had a rough start. I agree 100% that now is not the time to mess with painkiller. As I was reading your first post up above, I immediately thought you had missed painkiller. I actually believe you are better to feel a bit dopey than let pain get a hold on you right now. As mentioned, once gets hold, it's harder to fix but also I feel our mental and emotional states are too fragile to cope with it.
I love the gel pack ice. Use one barely frozen to put under by back side.
I did some of this yesterday and it worked a treat! Both sides of my bum are sore just from constant pressure I think so I will be making this part of my routine.
I hope you are able to nap a bit soothe your raw emotions somehow. Do you have a porch you could sit out on for a short change of scenery and some fresh air? It might help you sleep a bit.
Hugs my friend :console2:

Thanks everyone. I think I may have nodded off and had an ice pack against my leg for too long through the night. It took me most of today to warm up. It felt as though ice water was running in my veins. The pain isn't too bad today and I managed a two hour sleep this afternoon. I can't believe that I have gone from being totally fit and well to an invalid.. well maybe that is too strong a word and I do keep forgetting that it is only eight days ago that I had the op. It feels like forever. I think I am probably expecting far too much from myself, far too soon. Can I ask those that had stitches removed whether that made a difference to pain levels or not noticeably. Mine will come out on Thursday at my physio appointment.
