THR Two New Hips in Six Weeks

It was 1 am here then and I woke up then too in so much pain. Wee hours pain pity party!!!!

Ugh, sorry. The whole thing is a constant process of adjustment. You need to sleep, you want to be able to move around during the day, you want to be smart about medications. I was able to put together 7 hours last night with ice only in the wee hours.

I like and trust the OS and am grateful to have the physical therapists in twice a week, to check my progress, time me walking across the room, and chat with about all things hip ;) All bright young people, by which at this point I mean under 50, with a lot of empirical data, fun horror stories (the PTs) and answers to my burning questions, like "Is it going to stop hurting eventually?" ("Yes.".) We all need a team.

@EL11 I love living vicariously through your ‘team’. It is nice to have those semi-weekly ‘reality checks’, I bet! I appreciate this site because of the support. I really do.

:flabber:

Yes, I greatly appreciate the site too; it's healthy to be able to help others by sharing one's personal experience, as well as get pep talks and occasionally pity!

It is good to have the PTs for a reality check. As a side note, it's interesting to see how different my blood pressure is when taken at home, and manually.

Yes. Whether it's lowered by having taken oxycodone 12-15 hours before the nurse or PT visit, I won't know until I am totally off the oxy, I guess. It's been done half a dozen times at home now and is always about the same and not high. Another thing, FWIW, the nurse and PTs take it manually. At the doc's Tuesday, it was higher but still not as high as it used to be.

If you can buy it over the counter I think you're fairly safe. Lots of horrible warnings in the packet of worrying side effects! But they are uncommon.
I wouldn't depend on that at all! NSAIDs are wicked things! Read this links Mojo posted earlier
wound up having bad stomach cramps, a stern warning
It is indeed. You also should read the links Mojo left.

I asked the consultant if I could take it and I trust him. I wouldn't take any of the more powerful anti inflammatories- Naproxen gave me stomach cramps and my usual GP said I should never have been prescribed Meloxicam because of the dangers. I think in the UK generally doctors are more cautious about powerful medication like Tramadol for example. From orthopaedics we were sent home only with a limited amount of codeine.

@EL11 and @Albert!
Just checking in on you guys. You were here ...and then you went missing, I'm hoping you're just busy and not in any kind of recovery distress or pain situation. Right now you're probably watching some grown men wearing red stockings running around hitting balls with bats. It's ok. I am too.
Hope all is well!

Hey there @1stSurgery ... I am watching the Sawx all right, with trepidation!! Thanks for checking in.

My hip is a bit achy but I’m getting around pretty quickly. I got a pill splitter, going to try 1.5 oxy tonight and I’m moving upstairs @lovesstars :)

Albert was put to bed early tonight after gnawing into a package of high-end pita bread that was sitting on the counter and eating some.

RED SOX TAKE THE LEAD!!!

They're coming back strong today. I like Moooookie.
Pill splitter worked great for me, I found I needed less than I had been taking and then it let me more gently go off the oxy.
Sorry about the ow ache but moving upstairs sounds good!

Bad Albert!! :heehee: He should stick with the baguette and leave the pita for mom.
Back to game. And I'm supposed to be doing important work things right now.

Oh Albert, Albert, Albert. What on earth were you thinking? But what a fine palette he has!
The “High End” Pita bread!
With taste-buds like that he can work as a restaurant consultant.
Is he interested in extra work?

What cat would do that?? Anyway I would have just cut off any parts that appeared to have feline saliva on them but my boyfriend threw it out.

I had a productive writing day (lyrics) and around 4 I Ubered to the store. It was not really necessary to go out, but it was great to have just the stimulation of the supermarket. All I bought was pita bread, peanut butter and flowers.

The heating/cooling guy was here for a while, the electrician for hours, and when I got home from Price Chopper it had been sprinkling, was getting dark and the power was out in the house while they set up the generator. I walked around the back yard with my crutch for 20 minutes or so. I was so achy this morning even after sleeping in the real bed, on both sides too, but this evening it felt good to be walking around outside in the negative ion-y air; I practiced standing up real straight and imagined that I might be walking on my own in a couple of weeks, maybe.

That sounds amazing, @EL11!!!!

What a wonderful day!
Hurray for writing a million lyrics and UBER-ing to the store and buying flowers (and pita and peanut butter).

Sometimes there are cool cats who want to be restauranteurs. Really cool cats. They wear berets and use cigarette holders for their Indian cigarettes and they wear black turtlenecks over their black fur.

And when they are done in the kitchen, being the taster, for the night, they slip out the back door to the bar alley and read beat poetry.

Maybe this is Albert’s second career.

Well, he is pretty chill.

It did turn out to be a good day. Shopping with the crutch was a little awkward. I try to remember exactly when I turned the corner last time and was able to ditch it ...

@1stSurgery I like Mookie too. Watched a bit of Dodgers/Brewers.

My PCP's office called today about my getting periodic blood work and I go Look, I just had BOTH my hips replaced, I've had my blood drawn like 20 times in the last month and I get my blood pressure taken twice a week and I'm on a crutch. The PA, who has never been what I'd call jolly, actually burst into laughter and agreed I could certainly wait till December. I told her it was her boss who first predicted I'd be getting a hip replacement within 5 years; little did he know how quickly I'd prove his prediction correct, times 2.

@EL11 just finished watching Dodgers Brewers ...4-0 Brewers. They're a really good team to watch. All these games are having those 9th inning 2-down, tying run up, bases-loaded, pitcher-drenched, hair-pulling moments. Exciting!! Right @lovesstars?

So that's very good, @EL11...a 20 min walk outside AND a store trip! (hide the pita somewhere Albert doesn't go!) That sounds like excellent progress. I did my OS prescribed Monday15 min walk on the deck today in the Surrender Dorothy windstorm. Was kind of fun, the air so full of smells being carried in the winds, I'm sure you remember the night blooming jasmine. But ...due to some ODIC moves last night and the slightly longer walk today, I'm a little sore and oh so sleepy! Got the winter blanket out even.... Well we don't really have a winter but we pretend all the same. It does get kind of chilly...at night. Tomorrow night will be my first dinner out since right hip, if I'm up for it. That old energy drain train can be potent, even 3-4 weeks out!

I've always wanted a genny, never had one. Power is pretty consistent here so I probably don't need it but I love the idea if having a source of power at hand when it goes down.

Yes, just as you describe, hair-pulling/exciting!

The pits is really supposed to be in the fridge so that's where it is now.

What is ODIC?

I do remember the sweet night-blooming jasmine and had some on my fence when I lived in El Granada, CA (Half Moon Bay). Now there, in storms the power lines would sometimes get yanked down by a branch going off a cypress tree. LA is just too warm year-round for me, but when I left NorCal in the late 1990s I had to readjust to gardening in an area that a true winter, then I was in apartments for a while, now back in a house but in New England.

@lovesstars I hope you have those going-out experiences soon!
