THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

All recommendations duly noted, maybe minus the tennis ball.
Only one in house is beset with doggie slobber.
I have had my quota...cuatro minus uno...too tired to run bath...assuming the position in recliner and plan on hitting the coast on Sunday to fish.
Hope your weekend is sweet.

Sorry for delay replying @SaraK. Live in North East England, usually head off to North Sea coast. Sea usually cold to freezing, ambient temperature always a good 5 C degrees cooler than that of London and the South.

Hi @SaraK how you doing? Haven’t heard from you in a little while. Missing the photos of the impossible looking stretches. Still cant work out where your leg and knee are in relation to the rest of you! Have a great day.

Hey @gillycat11 - thanks for checking in! Not much new happening here. I'm at the slow part of recovery. Still working on some issues but basically at the point to just live life. I just started yoga once a week to improve flexibility and range of motion and plan to try to do it daily while on vacation.

In a couple weeks, we'll head down to Florida Gulf south of Tallahassee (essentially, right in the curve below the "panhandle" of Florida. Not a touristy area so planning lots of relaxation, kayaking, hiking, beachwalking, etc. as well as a college tour at Florida State for my younger son. There several lighthouses near where we'll be and a marine sanctuary, animal reserve, state park, state forest and national forest within 20 minutes. It should be a good test for these new hips!

In the pictures with the piriformis stretch/ pigeon, the one for the year old hip is truer form - knee of the bottom leg is 90 degree bend so goes straight across body. On the newer hip, the knee is more of a 45 degree angle and I can't get quite as low to the ground with the hip or bend the body over quite as far.

I'm quite impressed with your progress as well! Running to the codes, being on your feet and on the go for long shifts, lifting, twisting, etc. Nursing is not an easy occupation for anyone, new hips or not! I respect all that you've accomplished!

Have a great evening!

@SaraK you'll have to let us know how the yoga goes. I've been considering trying it again, but not sure if it is too soon after my surgery. Went to my daughter's soccer game last night and there was a lot of walking in a wet field, which I am paying for today. Your trip to Florida sounds like it will be a blast! So happy your hips are working so well for you. You give me hope that I'll be able to dance around and get back to hiking and biking later this summer too. :dancy:

@hipster333 - You might check with your surgeon's office. Like everything else, opinions differ and, depending on your procedure, they may have concerns about certain poses/moves. Otherwise, I'd think 3 months should be fine (I tried yoga for the first time ever about 6 weeks after my first THR with surgeon and PT's blessing). You should definitely let the instructor know about your THR, though, and recognize that you'll probably need to modify some poses/moves.

I tried a few sessions of yoga after first THR but the date/time of classes at my gym conflicted with the dates/times I could work out with my trainer so I only did a few classes. I'm doing them at a local rec center this time around and have generally liked the first 2 sessions. I did have a lot of soreness after the first session and realized later that she'd had us sitting cross-legged too long for my hips. That was a substitute and the regular teacher was horrified the next week to find out that she'd done that since even some of the regulars were complaining. I wasn't sore at all after the second session but definitely got a work out (even with modifying some moves).

I asked a bilateral hippie I know about apps to be able to do some on my own everyday while I'm on vacation and she recommended yogaglo.com. They have a free 15-day trial period and also direct you to the right classes depending on your prior experience (or not) with yoga and you can choose classes based on the style (hatha, restorative, yin, etc.) or by the body part (hips, lower back, etc.) you want to work on. I haven't pulled it up yet - waiting until vacation to start it. I'll let you know about that program in particular when I've tried it (maybe in my upcoming 6 month report - hard to believe it's been that long ago!).

Wow...it HAS been 6 months!

What a journey and how glad to know you are already back to life.
Hope your day is a Good Day, SaraK!

Thanks @SaraK. I’ll give the OS office a call. :) I’ll check out the app too. I know in general there are certain poses that would be a bad idea, but overall it’s probably anything that hurts (within reason) is a no-no. Enjoy your day!!

The holiday sounds fantastic. Especially the beach walking and hiked- in fact anything to be outside- enjoying life, the surroundings and being alive!
I’ve never tried yoga, having previously followed the “if it doesn’t hurt”-you aren’t working hard enough” theory on exercise. But having experienced hip and joint pain- I’ve decided it’s highly overrated and I’d prefer not to have it.
Hoping you have a super weekend!

We're finally here! Appts with PCP and cardiologist yesterday followed by a massage. Then on the road with younger son - about 7 hours including potty/walking breaks and BBQ. Went through torrential rain - drove 20mph on interstate For over 30 minutes not anything other than taillights in front of me - scary!

Then back at it today - over 11 hours including stops and finally rolled in a little while ago. With Alberto headed this way, we'll have lots of rain in the next few days. It was supposed to be rainy today but we didn't drive through very much of it. Horizon starting to change now, though and starting to get lightning.

Not knowing when we'll have the next chance, we walked a couple of miles along the beach in the dark. That's what I've been waiting for!!! The last vacation we took was 2 years ago this week. I was in pain and could barely walk the 100 feet to the beach - definitely couldn't stroll along it. I was hurting and frustrated because no one knew what was wrong - and I'm not sure anyone other than me believed that there was something wrong with the hip.

Now here I am back at the beach and loving it! I might even take a few walks during the storm if the winds aren't too bad.

I hope everyone is having a pain free and fun holiday weekend!

I hope your son is helping with the driving - that's a long time in a car! Enjoy your vacation...it's sounds like you intend to regardless of the weather which is great!

Hi Sara,
Happy to hear you made it to your destination safely.
Beach walks sound wonderful. Vacation sounds wonderful. How fun!
Enjoy your vacay with your son and safe travels back home.
@SaraK

Isn't that grand:happydance:. You do deserve it...love the ocean at night.

. I was hurting and frustrated because no one knew what was wrong -

I sure do remember that feeling.
Ultra frustrating!
Stay safe and Yay for progress:yes!:

Well, another first for me - we've been evacuated! We had a 2-1 vote in favor of riding out the storm despite the evacuation order (remember, I'm the Desperado!) but agreed that it had to be unanimous to stay. We're hoping we can go back on Tuesday. At least I got another long walk on the beach this morning.

Evacuated on vacation- probably not a lot of people can say that! Be careful with the walking on the beach in storms. Don't want your hips acting like lightning rods! Hee hee.
Life's full of firsts and new firsts after hip replacement!
Stay safe, generally don't think people get evacuated without there being significant risk.

People at my firm seem to have this luck @gillycat11 - a few years ago, 2 people ended up in 2 different hurricanes while on vacation - only a few weeks apart!

Now in hotel. Decided that the Official food of being evacuated was Krispy Kreme donuts followed by rum and whatever flavored water you have on hand. I think we'll survive. :heehee:

Well...at least you'll be drunk when you float away :rotfl:

STAY SAFE, WILD WOMAN!
@SaraK

Oh my stars...do stay safe.
I have to say, I love a fierce storm.
I'm guessing the ocean was showing signs of the impending event as you strolled on the beach?
