THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

@SaraK That reminds me of my PCP when I initially saw her about my hip pain - she said she didn't want to refer me to an ortho until we knew for sure it wasn't just a muscle issue since all they want to do is cut you open! Luckily she did refer me to someone I ended up liking, but I haven't had to talk to him about any challenging post-op questions yet. I feel like I've hit a bit of a plateau on regaining ROM (mostly external rotation) but at only 6 months I realize I have a ways to go. It's already so much better than pre-op but I guess I'm greedy like you!

@jaydub63 - My PCP kept trying to put the first hip off as bursitis (even though I had no external pain or pain to the touch). I had already seen 1 ortho (although she was really a rehab specialist and not surgeon) and nothing found in x-ray or MRI (which 2nd ortho said was very poor quality). She sent me to PT while I waited to see pain specialist (what a waste of time pain specialist was). PT and I were the only ones saying "its the hip!" but she sent me to 2nd ortho on basis of his recommendation (and me - of all people - breaking down in tears in her office from pain and frustration because no one was listening or really helping). When MRI came back showing significant labral tears, femoral head fracture with flattening and bone on bone, she finally understood the pain I'd been in! I didn't even bother talking to her about the 2nd hip!

Grrrrr! Bone surgeons! If it can't be sawed or hammered, they don't hear a word!
Preach, sister! Truer words and all that.

I'm greedy, though, and want everything possible and am not going to be fully satisfied until I know that this is all there is!
YES! Well said! You are now my sensei as well as president of the ODIC.

Uh oh, @Bone-obo - don't call me your sensei unless you want to add to those gray hairs Layla and Mojo don't have! They'll be putting you on the naughty list if you don't watch it! :giggle:

@SaraK My PCP took an x-ray and it was like "do not pass go, get directly to the OS" from there!

@Bone-obo Sara has earned her distinction as ODIC queen since I think she stopped at the gym to work out on the way home from her second THR lol.

I did not stop at the gym on the way home from surgery (3 hours after surgery was over). I went to the gym the day after surgery!

Sorry you're having issues, Sara. I don't blame you for the desire to get to the bottom of it.
Be greedy, want the best!

A few gray hairs isn't anything a little ol box of hair color can't fix. Works for me!

And it would take a lot for me to want Bone-obo on the naughty list. He makes me laugh, multiple times a day. I love that goof and I'm sure I'm not alone. A bonus....he even gives sound advice.

So then none of this happening this weekend? :happyfeet: :martini:

Hope you find answers and relief soon @SaraK
My one year appt is in a couple weeks. Can't even see my OS. He left the practice. How do you think I'm feeling about that? :gaah: :tantrum2: :bawl: Left under scandal, no less. :no-fin: If only I knew....

@Layla - Now don't go getting too radical on me! This little ol' psoas issue wouldn't stop me from dancing! That doesn't hurt anywhere! Unfortunately, my group has been doing outdoor concerts on weekday evenings that don't work for me for so many reasons. I decided today that I'm going to need to find somewhere to dance soon or I'm going to break out in hives. I'm even contemplating going next Friday when I don't really like the band - that's how desperate I'm getting! :rotfl:

And, lest you think I've settled down, I do have a workout tomorrow with my trainer and then yoga in the afternoon. Very sad - last session with this trainer because he's going to a power lifting fitness club. I'll miss that cute tush! I've already rejected one of the replacements he suggested - too much like a drill instructor. I don't respond well to that form of "encouragement." .I respond much better to positive reinforcement and (big shock) being challenged ("you probably can't do this, but").

You'd mentioned before that your OS had left the practice but not that it was under scandal. Do tell more!:heehee:

Oh @SaraK you do make me smile. When I brought up piriformis pain in left hip/ butt to os before right hip was done, he said “ I didn’t do anything back there” knew that part of conversation was over, but we did agree that once right was done and everything levels out I should see improvement. It is slowly getting there as long as I don’t push it. I think unfortunately muscle injuries/ tendons/ligaments can take longer to heal than we suspect.

Back in the dark ages when I was young and in high school I tore ligaments in foot. Doc told me I would have healed quicker if I broke a bone. Took a year or so for it to completely heal. And did I mention I was young then?

Hang in there, with your determination you will get it there.

Oh, and I can remember who, but someone relatively new was mentioning they were dancing first week. You have a relative with a recent thr?

 Just checking in and seeing you are on hiatus from your PT.
He must've got the check I sent him:heehee:
No, I know he is good to you and sounds like you do need to see what's going on with that dumb old thing with a silent P.
I do hope you have a Good Weekend!

:bignono:
as my mother used to say, when I declared "but what did I do?" She would answer that's for the one you got away with!

@MammaT - I'm not related to the other audacious dancer as far as I know but sounds like someone I need to get to know! If you happen to see it again, tag me so that I can be sure to pop in. I haven't been on many of the newer threads.

Mojo - your mom must be related to mine but that was always directed at my brother, not me. I was the good kid - my brother and sister were the ones that gave my mom gray hair!

Sorry you're having psoas issues.
I don't think you're greedy wanting the best possible, and pain free outcomes- I feel the same way. If there's anything out there to improve the end result- sign me up too!
I'm getting lots of relief from targeted Pilates. I do a beginners class aimed at people with back pain- lots of hip stretches, core stability and gently working on posture.

@gillycat11 - I'll look into Pilates for the future but not yet. Unfortunately, no classes I see at either fitness center I use at a time that works for me (do they think that people only want classes during the day on weekdays?). Plus I'm just getting going with yoga (very flowing/restorative and with instructor that is experienced in working with people who have physical limitations).

The stretches have helped some (at least I'm not having a stabbing pain when I try to stand back up after bending over) but biggest help has probably been that I'm not walking as much. I saw my PT turned massage therapist yesterday and she encouraged me to see the PT. She is thinking there could be a pinched nerve causing this since walking makes it worse even though not all the same muscles for walking v. lifting leg or knee. She also said that, if there were anything that needed more than PT, it's probably only going to happen after PT says more investigation needed.

I'm entering the busy part of the summer for me. From now until July 21, I'll be doing the computer work for my son's swim team. I create each of the meets, coordinate entries (home, away and conference meets), set up the meet once entries completed (home and conference meets), run the meets (home and conference meets) and prepare award labels (all meets). It's about 20-25 hours of work per home meet and about 15-20 per away meet. So, essentially an unpaid part-time job to add to my very full-time job! I'll be lucky to keep to my currently gym/yoga schedule and certainly can't add anything now (unless, of course, it has to do with dancing!).

Glad you’re having some improvement @SaraK. Pinched nerves are not fun.

Enjoy the time with your son’s swim meet stuff. While their extracurricular activities can take over our schedules it is a special time that passes too quickly.

Grrrrr! Bone surgeons! If it can't be sawed or hammered, they don't hear a word! I had my 6 month appointment and tried to talk to my surgeon about the psoas and ROM issues and the regression on both of those as I started walking longer distances. Cue eyes glazing over and beginning to contemplate the patient in the next room. Without any exam and cutting off my description and questions, he said "The X-ray shows everything still exactly where we put it. Sounds like a soft tissue issue. I'll give you a referral for more PT." Maybe more stretching is all I need but I'd really have felt better if he'd actually listened and done some amount of an exam!
LOL!! I think all surgeons are the same. Their job is done after you leave the OR. Oh Sara...sure hope things improve for you. I still have my aches and ROM issues too. We just muddle through one day at a time. (Wasn't that a TV series opening song?):heehee:

The stretches have helped some (at least I'm not having a stabbing pain when I try to stand back up after bending over) but biggest help has probably been that I'm not walking as much.
Where were you getting the stabbing pains, Sara?

@Bumblebee - the stabbing pain was in the glute crease area near the groin. That seems to be much better now but still not 100 percent gone. The bigger issue is regressing on ROM (putting ankle on knee to do socks and shoes difficult again) and limited ability to activate psoas/hip flexor without pain if I even can activate it. I can climb stairs (unless I've walked a great distance and then it gets harder) but I can't even lift my leg off the ground in a straight leg raise or bring the knee towards the chest if I'm laying on the ground. No problem if I use my hands or someone else lifts it so that the muscle itself isn't working. If they let go, though and I have to lower it to the ground, PAIN! 2 months ago, none of this was problematic. I could do dead bugs and Russian twists and all manner of other torture devices my trainer would throw at me. Now, not a chance. I haven't had any obvious injury (this started long before my very minor spill on vacation) and walking and most daily activities aren't a problem. It will be interesting to get my PT's take on it. Even my trainer was concerned and urged me to follow up because he could see further regression each time I worked with him.

I'd just like to figure out what's going on so that we can try to resolve it. I big shocker but I'm not the world's most patient person! I've got too much living to do to sit around on my posterior waiting for this to get better!
