THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

Actually, when we left, the waves weren't that significant and there was only a light rain. Here in Tallahassee (45 miles away), we are still only getting light showers with a light sky. I think you may be getting more rain from this so far @Mojo333 !

Feeling very refreshed. My PCP gave me gabapentin to try for the hot flashes (she could see the severity when I suddenly started having sweat roll off my face and neck during my appt Fri). I slept better last night in a strange bed than I have in a few months when they started getting more frequent and more severe.

Off to lunch soon and then my boys are giving me a day to myself - yoga, gym, nap(s) and Netflix on the agenda. While we could have survived with a single hotel room, I also decided to go for 2 since I would be more relaxed if I wasn't walking through their mess and dealing with them constantly. Ended up with rooms on different floors. All the better! Having kids makes you understand all the nuances of the saying that "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." :rotfl:

I'm with you...good for you for having some YOU time.
Yep, typical spring shower then steam up, and shows no sign of letting up this week.
I just brought Dad some ribs and took off his trash and found his wallet...again!
Now off for some me and Mojo time floating in the pond if we don't get rained out.

We got the all clear a couple of hours ago and returned to rental on the Gulf. We'd expected that it would be tomorrow at earliest and had paid for 2 nights at hotel. Even though it was several hours after checkout, they told me they were refunding the 2nd night without me even asking! After a grocery store run on the way, we're back safe and sound. Definitely more windy and much more chop and higher waves than when we left yesterday.

Miracle! Getting a refund without asking.
Stay Safe! No tripping with those new hips while dodging puddles.
@SaraK

Hey @dougie0216 - good to hear from you. Things are generally good here. I'm on vacation this week and have walked at least 3 miles on the beach every day in addition to other activities. We did a college tour at Fla State yesterday with my son that would have been impossible 2 yrs ago - we walked over 4 miles and went up numerous flights of stairs. Today my son and I took a 6 mile hike in St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and I just settled down to a bottle of bubbly as I listen to the Gulf after a 3 mile walk on the beach! i still have a psoas issue I need to discuss with my surgeon at my 6 month appt next week but if he said this is all it will ever do, I could happily live with it!

When is your big ride - isn't it coming up soon?

Excellent Report! @SaraK Big race at end of August. Slowly ramping up mileage. I still walk, do yoga, resistance bands, Pilates and have added yard work to the mix. I'm staying away from free weights for now. I have some bursitis, but none of the stuff listed above bothers it. Weights on the other hand....

Vacation over - just the long drive back. Weather was much better than forecast - even before Alberto started forming. I had a 2-3 mile walk on the beach every day (including this morning) except Wednesday when we spent the entire day in Tallahassee after the college tour. 2 days in a row with 20K + steps. Hiking in Tate's Hell State Forest then kayaking yesterday. Loving my new hips!

Don't tell @Mojo333 but I broke the rules Thurs - fell down and went boom. Wasn't looking where I was stepping for just a minute and foot went into a hole, turned ankle and fell right on newest hip. Luckily felt ok after just a few steps since I had another 2 miles before we got back to the car and no other hikers on trail except my son and I.

My vacation tradition is taking a picture at sunset on the last night. I loved my evening walks because I saw this!

Beautiful!
It sounds like you had fun, snuck in a lot of exercise and thankfully survived a fall. Scary!
Happy you weren't hurt. Safe travels home, Sara. :driver:
@SaraK

Jealous of that beach time @SaraK--even with the evacuation. Glad you survived your fall!

@SaraK How did your son like FSU? I always liked college visits with my kids, but I'm glad they both decided to go in-state lol!

@jaydub63 - I think he liked it. He didn't like the tour but we had lunch with the head of the actuarial program on our way and that was very helpful. My first son didn't do any college trips - was hoping for golf scholarship but that possibility disappeared with 2 surgeries on same wrist his senior yr. Ended up in good program that was collaboration btwn public school and private school in our city. This son looking at private school in STL, very small in state public on other side of state and FSU (which is instate tuition because his dad lives in Florida. Not all schools have good actuarial programs and those are the only 2 instate and FSU is in top 10. We do our visit at Univ of Central Missouri on Friday. Probably the only 2 college trips I'll ever do.

:nah:Falling down IS against the rules!
I broke the rules too..scary.
Once i figured out hip was okay, didn't even care that everything else hurt:giggle:
Beautiful beautiful sunset.
Looks like, At The End of The Day, it was a good vacation.
I've decided that some of my fondest memories are the vacations that went slightly awry.
Makes for great "remember when" stories.
Hope all continues to go well!:kayak:

Beautiful sunset picture.
Careful with the rule breaking- I haven’t done a fall yet- can’t say I’m in a hurry to try either.
Enjoy your week @SaraK.

Thanks @MyAussieGirl ! I peek in more often than I post (on mine or others) nowadays. I do try to see what's up on your thread. Wish I felt confident enough to go swimming-never have like my body shape and 1 year at the gym hasn't moved me enough in the right direction. With my alabaster white skin, I risk being mistaken for a beluga in a white swim suit or a killer whale in a black one! Even at the Gulf Coast, the only parts of me that that got wet with salt water were the feet and ankles - that still felt good, though.

We did our 2nd college visit this weekend. It looks like visits to my son in Florida may not be in the cards. He is now leaning towards the University of Central Missouri. He thinks it may be better for him because it is closer to home and a smaller school in a smaller town. It's about 3-1/2 hours from here and less than an hour from where my mom and sister live. Guess I'll have to find my own way to Florida in a few years!

Florida without kids may be more fun @SaraK! I relate to the whale feeling. Glad your son is looking at the total picture for college choice.

@SaraK Glad to hear the college visits are going well. Both my kids applied to some out of state schools but ended up staying pretty close to home, which has been much easier on the checkbook and they still have the independence of living away from home. It sounded like your son was interested in a very specific program too, which certainly helps narrow down the choices. I'm sure you'll still make it to Florida if you want!

Grrrrr! Bone surgeons! If it can't be sawed or hammered, they don't hear a word! I had my 6 month appointment and tried to talk to my surgeon about the psoas and ROM issues and the regression on both of those as I started walking longer distances. Cue eyes glazing over and beginning to contemplate the patient in the next room. Without any exam and cutting off my description and questions, he said "The X-ray shows everything still exactly where we put it. Sounds like a soft tissue issue. I'll give you a referral for more PT." Maybe more stretching is all I need but I'd really have felt better if he'd actually listened and done some amount of an exam!

I talked to my PT and he was completely booked this week because he's out next week (and PTs not being created equal, I'll wait for him). We did talk about what stretches to do, what not to do at the gym (I'd already discontinued most of the troublesome stuff a couple of months ago because they hurt), etc. and will see him when he gets back if there hasn't been significant improvement. He was a bit concerned because of the regression (I'm sleeping with a pillow under the op leg again and hadn't done that in months) and the impact of walking (after a 2-3 mile beach walk on hard-packed sand, I'd have difficulty climbing the stairs foot over foot back to our beach rental).

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm not in a huge amount of pain and would still consider the op a success even if it didn't get any better. I'm greedy, though, and want everything possible and am not going to be fully satisfied until I know that this is all there is!
