THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

Glad healing is going so well @SaraK. Goes to show that backing off for awhile helps us in the long run. I am hopeful that the uneven ground that is my yard won’t be much of a problem in another month when I am ready to work on flower beds.

@MammaT - when you have a muscle tear, yes, you have to rest it and let it heal. This was all unrelated to my early activity, though, and I wouldn't do any of that differently.

Oh not saying you should have done anything differently with initial recovery @SaraK. Just think you show how important it is to be aware of a change, something different, and not try to push through it! And, everything that happens is not necessarily our hips.

Glad you are back to your dancing self!

Renegade Rebel, Dancing Queen :happyfeet:That be our Sara :heehee:
Hope the rest of your week is great!
Shining up those dancing shoes for the weekend? Must be antsy after taking last weekend off....

I am super impressed @SaraK with your galavanting about doing all those hikes. Great work you're doing. Happy for you that you got your trip finally with son and a visit with mom and grandmother of 95 (wonderful!) and sister. That must have been some talk a thon and well deserved.

I on the other hand am just beginning to walk unassisted and have been advised by my PT to take it slow and easy and use the cane on longer walks to protect the right knee which has some arthritis nastiness that is pulling the knee to the middle when I walk on unassisted on my op leg. My lower parts are failing gradually and need to be protected. None of which can be blamed on the 2 first failed surgeries. Just age. Walking without pain is the real gift.

Thanks so much for letting me know where you are and how extremely well you are doing. You are some kind of power house! So happy for you, Lovely Lady. :egypdance:

@zinnia - you are doing so well! You've had to deal with so much more than I have. As I've said before - I want to be you when I grow up (if I grow up). You had 2 years of problems and setbacks. It's to be expected that it will take you a bit longer - especially on longer walks. When I did the long hike before I had to shut things down, I used my cane just to be sure I didn't get overtired. In your case, you're protecting those knees rather than necessarily needing it for the hip! I'd do almost anything (except give up the dancing) to prevent a knee replacement. Besides - there are many other uses for that cane! :heehee:

@Layla - dancing shoes ready (although getting a bit worn out :heehee:)! PT today went well. I won't go again until Monday so we discussed weekend activities. Keeping a bit of a leash on trainer. No up and down off the floor and primarily upper body. PT authorized some I won't tell trainer about (like step ups) - need to save the legs for dancing. He's also approved adding the back the abductor machine and increasing weights some. I still won't be back where I was prior to injury but much closer (I can see the light at the end of the tunnel). Probably be finished with PT after next week. I'd wanted to continue until I started seeing range of motion increase beyond where it was pre-injury and I'm pretty close at this point. Even sat "crisscross applesauce" last night!

@MammaT - I didnt take your statement wrong but wanted to be sure it was clear. Just like surgeons have different approaches for the surgery, there are different approaches to recovery. The main thing, as you say, is to listen to your body, not push too far and be ready to rest and make adjustments where necessary. I am a firm believer in PT - when done properly. It should be tailored to the individual and how they are doing and what their goals are. If an exercise hurts when you do it or causes pain later, it shouldn't be done - your body just isn't ready for it. A good PT is going to watch you and your movements to see where gait adjustments are necessary or where there may be weaknesses that need to be fixed to prevent pain because of other muscles compensating - even when just walking. The PT should also be looking for signs of pain or you getting tired and know when the session should end, even if time's not up. Luckily, I found that sort of PT.

Happy Pi day to all!

What's Pi day?
Is that a typo?
If not, inquiring minds want to know whether they want to have a Happy Pi day....or not :heehee:

The number equivalent of pi (remember formula for circumference and area of circle) begins with 3.14 so March 14 is Pi Day - you celebrate by having pie (including Pizza pie). It has even more meaning here in the 314 area code and at a local pizza place - Pi Pizza. So, unless you're (back) on a diet like me, it's definitely a day to celebrate! Have a slice of pepperoni pizza with a slice of apple pie Ala mode for me!

NO! I don't remember the blah, blah, formula, circumference part! I must have been absent that day :rotfl:
I'll have a slice but me not likey circle meat (pepperoni)
Sausage, mushrooms, red peppers (real, not flakes) onions and black olives ....please!
Happy Pi day to you too!

You are very correct about the pt @SaraK. I think, unfortunately, I have had the luck of getting some of the “cookie cutter” approaches to pt. That is part of what has me not pushing for it at this stage. I am not opposed to checking it out again once initial healing is subsided, but I want to try to find someone like who you have found.

I am going to see if massage is ok when I see doc next week. My next door neighbor has a therapist who she says has been tremendous help with her knee.

@MammaT - a friend of mine has had 2 THR with my surgeon (she's following me around). Her first PT experience was horrendous. The PT had her doing fire hydrants less than a week after surgery. When she did the 2nd, I convinced her to switch. Mine wasn't convenient to her but he recommended someone else in his system and then walked him through how SuperPath protocol should work. She progressed much faster and was much happier this time around. I hope you're able to find someone good.

Hope all is well with you and yours.
Thank goodness it's Friday...I'm "resausted", as my great nephew says. He's 5.
Hoping all recovering hippy pals have great weekend!

Thanks for checking in @Mojo333 and a special thank for the hugs @MyAussieGirl (you can never get enough of those). Just a quiet Sunday after an active Saturday.

I was a little concerned about what my trainer had in store for me Saturday when he told me to take Friday as a rest day. It wasn't too bad, though. We primarily worked the upper body but he threw in a few things for legs that I'd been doing in PT. Then dancing to one of my favorite bands last night. Between it being a very popular local band and at an Irish-themed establishment, it was packed wall-to-wall when I arrived. I still found a way to carve out my space to dance, though, and it got less crowded as the night went on.

Between the workout and the dancing, I expected to be fairly sore and stiff all over today but felt surprisingly well when I got up today. The massage I had scheduled was just right! Now just a little stiffness in lower back but not too bad.

Now I'm having fun with paperwork for work. Brought a nice big box of it home Friday but will probably only get through half of it. So glad (not) that tomorrow is Monday!

Glad you got your outing with no bad side effects @SaraK. Today, after 6 weeks, I am diving into work emails. I hope I can surface from them. Planning on lots of deletes! (I have @6,000 of them). I just didn’t deal with work.

You will get there @Mascaramom . Range of motion is something I'm still working on but, now that the torn muscle is better, it's at least moving the right direction. I had not gotten to the point where I'd lost mobility/flexibility on this hip and had worked on flexibility quite a bit before op. Just before op, I could do a pigeon pose on either side (including the original side that was 7 months post op) so I expect to eventually be at that point again. Not rushing it too much, though.

Wondering what is up in the recovery of @SaraK? Hope things are continuing to go well and you are seeing rom improvements you want.

I haven't posted lately because, even with recovery from muscle tear, I'm at the point where it seems like things are glacial in speed of change. It's good, though, that I no longer get questioning or skeptical looks from PT when I talk about my plans to dance, etc (even swing dancing). I'd planned to do a hike last weekend but the weather didn't cooperate. I mentioned it to PT ahead of time and he said no reason no to go for it (was only about 3 miles and only a little hilly). Thursday is supposed to be the last day of PT, though, and then I'll be completely set loose upon the world again. Scary concept? :rotfl:

It is a good thing they don't film PT sessions. I started with the treadmill Monday and was supposed to do one side, other side, backwards and then forwards. When I tried to turn around, though, I didn't get my foot firmly on the stationary side and ended up taking a spill. Think of all the cartoons of someone rolling off the back of the treadmill and that was me. Luckily, nothing injured other than my dignity!

I think I'll keep my trainer on a short leash again this Saturday. I'm back at the gym but not back to the fitness and strength I was at before the surgery or the muscle tear. (That, plus it may save me from the dreaded split squats for 2 more weeks).

Range of motion has already improved significantly and PT said to continue with the stretches going forward and it would continue to improve. Nothing he's seen would suggest there is any physical impediment.

@MammaT - Sounds like things are going smoothly in your return to work. Even at reduced hours, those first few days can be exhausting. I'm impressed you have the energy to make the rounds and check on everyone tonight! :loveshwr:
