THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

Enjoy that birthday dinner with son! My oldest just turned 30 and I have no idea where time went.

Great way to meet people also, @SaraK
Maybe you'll meet Prince Charming and dance off into the sunset :happyfeet::happyfeet:
Enjoy the birthday dinner. My oldest is 42 :rotfl:. I started young :heehee:

Interesting twist on the antibiotics issue. My OS changed Policy last year to requiring antibiotics before dental procedures for life. On the other hand, he doesn't require antibiotics for skin biopsies which he considers "clean procedures." My dermatologist, on the other hand, requires antibiotics before biopsies for life and uses a different one than the OS.

Hope your son's birthday is happy.
:dancy:
Please take care...I'm not liking the title of forum nay-sayer.:nah:

It's OK @Mojo333 - I was a very compliant child and am now making up for it by not hearing the word "no" any more. The classic, though, was when my older son was 4 and I asked him "what part of the word no don't you understand," his response? "The N and the O" - knew I was in big trouble going forward! :rofsign:

I asked my dentist and doctor specifically about the antibiotic thing, having read it on some website and they both laughed. Said there was no evidence of efficacy. Said it was an "American thing". Whatever one of those is. Now I'm really confused.

@gillycat11 - When I saw my dentist in January, we talked about it. She said that at their annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia they got a huge lecture from the CDC (Center for Disease Control, which is based in Atlanta) about not needing antibiotics for dental procedures. That said, she goes with whatever the orthopedic surgeon and patient decide. I had intended to ask OS why they'd extended their recommendation from 2 years to lifetime re dental work but forgot. As I indicated, dermatologist insists on it even for simple shave biopsies (and I haven't been in yet when she didn't do at least 1 - even my freckles have freckles and the one basal cell cancer she found had a pre-melanoma hiding inside it that wasn't expected).

I admit I'm conflicted. I don't want to take antibiotics unnecessarily but I don't like to go against my doctors' recommendations. I've seen a number of the articles and have seen that researchers have indicated that it's not necessary for dental or "clean skin" procedures (there's an article about it in the library at least as it relates to dental procedures), but I've also seen recommendations on a number of things in the medical world change back and forth (current blood pressure recommendations are an example). So far I'm following the doctors' recommendations but can't say that will continue indefinitely.

@SaraK, I know- it's really hard. Not being able to get clear straightforward and most importantly evidence based advice. I had some dental work 3 weeks ago- would have probably felt safer having antibiotic cover, but I was refused. As I said its just so confusing.

My “old school” doc demands them for both and since my dental is only twice a year I decided not to fight it. His explanation was an infection can go straight to the joint. I also had yo cancel my March cleaning because he wanted no dental work for 6 months. I have my field of expertise do I guess I will yield to his knowledge. My dentist knows my OS do she won’t go against his wishes.

Only had to wait 1 month for dental or derm biopsy per OS but dermatologist goes by greater of 3 months or OS requirements. I didn't know those dates when I scheduled my appointments but they were coincidentally less than a week after the minimum in each case. Better to be lucky than good!

I am so hoping this biopsy comes back clear so that I can drop back to every 6 months (4 more years of that before I can see dermatologist 1 time a year). Given my fair skin, living in equatorial area and other sunny climes in first few years of life and my father's long history of skin cancers, I'm not sure I'll ever hit the once a year plateau.

We have a very dear friend who has had multiple MOHS surgeries. Had a large cancer on his nose and had nose reconstruction. Bless your heart! I have a very olive complexion but always check.

At my first appt with her, my dermatologist asked me if I was a natural redhead. I'm not but she though I was from the complexion. When I told her I'd lived in California for first 1-1/2 years, Ethiopia for next 2-1/2 and Arizona for the next year, she was surprised I'd made it past 50 without a skin cancer.

I'm just hoping that I can have fewer doctor appts and procedures this year than last!

I hope all is clear.
Please keep it checked.:praying:
I am fair in the winter, mothers Irish-English heritage but my paternal grandmother is Cherokee, so I take sun well.
I should be more careful...but I love sun!

I love sun but my problem is that sun doesn't like me! My two possible skin tones are lobster red and alabaster white. I have had many nasty sunburns (with quarter sized blisters and skin so raw it can't stand any clothing, etc.) I can get a bad sunburn just being outside without sunscreen for 15 minutes in July and even have to put sunscreen on if I'm going to be driving a long distance. All this with spending so much time as a youngster in climates with strong sun before there was such a thing as sunscreen. So yes, I'll be getting it checked regularly and didn't put up resistance to the dozen or so biopsies she's taken in the last 15 months (other than making her do the abc's of skin cancer with me on the 2 sites on my forehead she wanted to biopsy). See @Mojo333 I can be compliant on SOME things!:heehee:

If I read this correctly a good biopsy but I will pray and my OS and Dentist both say 2 years on dental. My Gastro doc said it's all BS her word not mine so I do 2 years....Huge hugs

@SaraK Hope you're well! My Knee and Hip OS both have told me that I will need antibiotics prior to any dental treatment for the rest of my life! Both of them are relatively young doctor's.

Not much new here @zinnia . My son and I finally took our "Christmas" trip (that had been cancelled 3 times) to visit my mom. We had dinner Saturday with my mom, sister and grandmother (who will be turning 95 this summer). I took about a 2 mile walk through our bit of my small hometown. Lots of small hills and very few sidewalks (and they're more treacherous than the yards the moles have been digging in). Definitely a bit different than the treadmill walking or the hike I did a few weeks ago on a flat paved surface. My calves were sore afterwards but otherwise no problems. Next week I'm probably going to do a 3.2 mile hike with one of my groups at a local park that has bison, deer and elk if the weather is decent.

I'm still doing physical therapy to strengthen the glute muscle that was torn but probably finishing up in the next week or so. Lots of motions while trying to balance with that foot on an unstable surface and bridging (now with most of the work being done by the op leg). PT has OK'd starting to use more of the equipment at the gym (low weights at first and adding in one or two at a time to see if any bother me) and working with trainer this Saturday (no getting up and down off the floor and primarily upper body work and PT exercises). I also told him that the band this Saturday was one of my favorites and I could easily do 10-12,000 steps while out that night. He just said to have fun!

My range of motion is improving some every day. It's now the same or a bit better than it was before I tore the muscle. PT was very pleased with the improvement since last Friday (and so was I).

Wow great news @SaraK I am impressed with your progress. Some of it sounds hard to do but great work with physical therapy. I am also mega glad you finally had your trip :wowspring:
