THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

A spring in my step today! PT ok'd some dancing tonight and starting back on cycle and treadmill - low and slow. Did 10 mins on cycle at PT (which actually reduced pain from a 1 to 0) and then some balancing, stretching and a few light exercises. None of it hurt but he said not to be surprised if the muscles are a little sore later because they havent been used in awhile. He'll only beconcerned if it doesnt respond to ice and isnt gone or significantly fading by the next day.

I will behave myself and not dance as much as I would normally tonight and will take it easy on the cycle and treadmill (don't want him to have any reason to take it away again). Just happy to be getting back to normal!

Give it some time, @MammaT - lots of healing still to come. For me, the bike was the best way to loosen things up and reduce the pain after the THR - part of the "motion is lotion" but without weight compressing things. When I started back to work (too early), stopping at the gym to use it (I need to look into getting one for at home) was more important than eating dinner!

I'm glad you're doing well!

I wish I had a Stationary bike....I've been searching on swap sites and classifieds and either I just miss a good deal or its wayyyyy out of my price point. I just imagine the thousands of people who have one they don't use anymore.....becomes a clothing rack or ends up in the back 40 of their garage. Those are the gems and when they sell they go cheap....like under 60 bux!

I do have an old one that's broken. May try to see if I can fix. It was awful low to the ground, though - not as tempting!

Great news! Sara
I'll bet you were out last night shaking your groove thing :happyfeet:
Hope your pain is going, going, gone!
Enjoy the weekend!
@SaraK

@SaraK just wanted to check in and see how your weekend is going? How soon after surgery did you return to work?

@Layla - how did you know the band was the Groove Thang? Yes, I did go out and enjoy myself last night. I was a little sore this morning but not from the muscle I'd strained. It had just been too long .for the rest of the body. Everything loosened up when I started moving around this morning and going to the gym in a bit - will limit myself to cycle and treadmill and not too much of those. Some of the people I usually see there are probably wondering if I'm still alive!

@hipster333 - thanks for checking in. Hope you get some rest and answers about your abdomen. With my first THR, I went back to work about 2-1/2 weeks out and did about 50% first week and 75% next then back to full time. I've got a desk job and had a quick recovery so that worked fairly well. This time, the tax bill had a major impact on my work and work load and I had 2 choices - delay surgery or go back much sooner. I didn't want to delay for several reasons, so I ended up working from home some. The week after surgery and going back pretty much full-time after one week. Since everyone else in my department was putting in about 80 hours a week at that point, you might be able to say that 40-50hours a week was part-time. :heehee:

I definitely wouldn't recommend that return to work schedule to anyone. The first week at work was tough but the next week was better. I did learn to write a lot of reminders to myself - definitely dealt with surgery brain/CRS Syndrome (can't remember stuff). I had to take my son to doctor week after surgery (or he took me to his doctor since he had to drive). We saw a specialist a few weeks later and he asked several questions about whether they had done certain things in the original exam. I answered no one a few things that my son had to correct. Only after he had something, did I remember it happening! Scary!!

It's amazing how much muscle tone and conditioning you can lose in 6 weeks! I cycled 2-1/2 miles (17 mins) and walked 1-1/2 mile (40 mins) and am wiped out! Now home icing and elevating just to prevent any problems. I'll decide whether to do the few PT exercises later when I see how the muscles react to what I've done already.

That’s a decent workout @SaraK, especially coming off injury. I drove for first time and walked into subway-tired me out! (But I also got 15 mins and 2 1/4 miles on bike. No tread mill, but may walk to end of street later.

Hope muscles bounce back.

Glad you're back to driving @MammaT - a significant milestone! I'm sure things will bounce back, but you know how patient I am. It was all without resistance and still about 2/3 my prior speed. My PT knows me well enough now to know he was lucky to keep me back as long as he did. I definitely understood the need to let this heal, though. I joked with PT about signing up for a 6 mile hike on Sunday. He said I wouldn't hurt anything but might be sore for a few days if I did. I think I'll pass for now - will hope to get in a few long walks/hikes when spring arrives and before it gets too hot. Also trying to figure out when and where to go for vacation - somewhere I can take long walks on the beach!

Definitely a possibility. We loved Orange Beach a couple of years ago (even though I couldn't walk) and one of my former coworkers is in Niceville. We're probably going to do a school visit at Florida State on the way there or back so had been thinking about trying somewhere a little closer to there.

Well, you still have lots of gulf coast to hit from there. Main thing is the sand and the sun!

Let's try to give it the same 6 weeks you took to lose muscle tone to get it back.:beg:
Oh my stars...you must like to make me anxious.
:dubious:

Relax @Mojo333 - I slept in and woke up with only my usual bit of creakiness that went away with a few steps. I guess I shouldn't tell you I plan to do it all again today? :heehee:
Should I ask my mom if I ran before I walked?
Range of motion is a little better today as well. Was able to put socks on much more easily.

Slow steady progress-your favorite @SaraK! Glad you got to sleep in. Don’t overdo too much today!
