THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

So @SaraK your pain in the butt can you massage it yourself??? Editing to add is it like stinging or tingles?? I get that lots from sofa and car seats I think we have the same thing

The pain isn't at the surface but can "massage" by rolling on tennis ball or something like that. Pain is more like an ache - kind of like the feeling when someone pushes on a bruised area. Worst pain is with external rotation when hip is flexed - that hurts when I do it and even more when I undo it - sometimes have to use my hands to slowly lower the leg. I'm sure we'll either get rid of it soon or figure out what's causing it.

Glad you said this! I think my pain and knot came after way too long of sitting in car, restaurant and then car again. Sitting on a tennis ball sounds good @SaraK. Maybe I could search Lola’s toy box.

Mine is a taste different and no trouble getting my legs to move but I still love my ice @SaraK Thanks they better figure your issues out lol mine too but mine is often from laying on my side on sofa too long and 2-5 hrs in car

@SaraK I can relate to problem child. My OS was like, 'Normally I see people every 2-months, but I'll see you on your year anniversary.'
I don't do 'can't' or 'don't ' very well. That applies to everything, not just hip replacement. I sat in front of class and asked questions in college. I occasionally get my hand slapped at work. Oh well.
I had surgery to get my life back. Like you, I actually have much better flexibility now in both hips. As long as I choose not to run, I should get 22-25 years out of each hip. For that kind of money, I better be able to play, you know?

@dougie - you sound like me! If someone says something can't be done, my response is "watch me do it" - and, yes, at work as well. I still have to see OS on sched (1 MO, 3 MO, 6 MO and year) - does x rays each time. My only questions when I saw him post op after 2nd surgery related to when I could use cycle at gym (next day), start working out with weights (2 weeks but keep weights low until 1 MO), and other activities.

It's not definitive, but PT thinks the issue is that I strained the gluteus medium during my mishap at the doctor's office. How ironic is it that it wasn't any of my many activities that caused the problem but my doctor broke me! Since almost anything I do other than sitting activates the muscle, prescription is to do nothing but walk and then only what I need to do (although I've put him on notice that I may sneak in some dancing Saturday). :heehee:

Well @SaraK, better served to rest and let it heal now so that you are ready for your summer. For some reason, I think you may have a few activities planned. A little less dancing now will lead to lots more later!

It's so hard to do, isn't it @MammaT . I will listen to PT but thought I'd put the idea out there. He said it was a possibility I could go dancing as long as I stopped if any pain but that we'd see where I was Friday before making that decision. I really am like a 5 year old that you have to tie down, aren't I? Even with the negotiations!

I’m living vicariously through your exploits! But maybe occasionally you need to hold back just a little and I need to be a bit more adventurous.:heehee:

And I've been very good the last few weeks! I've only been to the gym 3 times since I got hurt and the last time was almost 3 weeks ago. I've been out dancing a couple times since then but even that's been limited. This straight jacket will only last so long before I pull a Houdini!

:happyfeet: At your own risk.....Live dangerously! :heehee:
@SaraK

@Layla - I'll take my cue by whether PT says no or how strongly he urges me not to! He wasn't saying no today and was certainly leaving the possibility open. He was glad, though, that I had other plans and was skipping swing dancing lessons .tomorrow.

I know you're taking care of yourself. Hope it's easing...
Wishing you a great day, Sara

@SaraK I asked my OS before I left the hospital if seated or flat on my back weights were ok? He said, 'Your hip is structurally sound, " and just to make sure I was seated or on my back for the first few weeks. So I was doing biceps, triceps and chest the third day after surgery. I'm a tall slender guy so I wasn't doing massive weights trying to be Arnold. I was just doing 15-25# per-arm trying to stay toned until I could get back on the bicycle. I really, really like to eat so you gotta burn it off, right? After the first hip, the second one was really not that big of a deal. Although I did do too much a couple of times, mainly walking too far when the soft tissue hadn't healed sufficiently. I'm coming up on nine mo's after rthr and literally can't tell I'm a double hippy. When I get out of the shower and see the scars, I'm like, oh yeah! Duh! I don't even think about it most days. By summer you should be good to go.

@dougie0216 - I'm at 10 months after 1st THR. Like you say, I don't think about it much anymore - stopped worrying about it when the problems with the other hip started. I was a couch potato before that one and then got in better shape before 2nd. With this one, I'd started with stationary cycle the day after surgery and with weight machines, etc 2 weeks after surgery and weight machines 2 weeks after. I know I have to take it easy now but hate that I'm going to feel like I'm starting over at square one with so much time off. In addition to the weight (I also love to eat), I'd brought my blood sugar and blood pressure down and will have to watch those with inactivity. I don't even have PT exercises to do! All were causing pain (even walking hurts) so PT had me stop all of them. It's amazing how much the glut med does!

i guess I get to practice patience now - not my strong suit!

Behave:no-fin:...No dancing, no pushing it...don't make me holler at you Sara. I've been very patient with you.
I want you WELL!

I have no doubt you will get back to your routine and be stronger than ever @SaraK, especially since you recognize the benefits beyond how it can make us look. Two surgeries in less than a year is a lot, regardless of surgical approach.

You are a champ and will get back to where you want before you know it. Your patience now will get you there on a full-time, long term basis.

Ah @SaraK you are an inspiration to us. I want to get up and go dancing too! :happydance:I guess at two weeks it's still a little early. Just can't wait to get back to all of the things I could do before all of this pain first started. Take it easy on yourself. Hope your strain feels better soon!

I appreciate everyone's concern but trust me - I don't want this to take any longer than necessary to heal. I've been told it could take 6-8 weeks assuming no surgery required (and I doubt it will be) and this happened about 4 weeks ago so, while I'll be chomping at the bit, I won't do anything that's likely to increase the injury or recovery time. I haven't even gone into the gym because, while I might be able to do some seated upper body work, I'd be too tempted to do more (and who wants both halves of their body sore anyway :heehee:). If I have to miss dancing, I'll miss dancing - and darn well make up for it later! I'm planning a beach vacation in early summer and, unlike 2 years ago, I plan on being able to walk on the beach!
