THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

Sorry you have hit a slowdown @SaraK. You have been quite the energizer bunny. Hopefully resting will help some. Mojo333 is right, there is just stupid recovery stuff. Appreciate you want to give os as much information as possible, but please don’t overdo pt.

Sorry you're struggling @SaraK
Hope you learn the cause and your pain eases soon.
Wondering if you've tried icing for the groin pain?
Wishing you comfort!

Yes, I have been icing and ice and rest help some but I'm not sleeping well because it hurts even when I switch positions at night - and I'm an active sleeper. It's concerning, though, because the range of motion has been getting worse. I also should be able to climb a single flight of stairs without sharp pain by now.

It may be nothing but I trust my PT to help evaluate and treat. PT will not be painful other than the tests to evaluate range of motion. PT will consist of stretches, massage, etc. To loosen up the muscles and strengthen the core. We never did the marching or straight leg raises because they hurt.

Sorry to hear you've hit a rough patch. It sounds like you work with some great folks for your hips and hopefully they'll get it sorted quickly. Take it easy and we'll be here for you.

@SaraK ! Definitely sounds like getting things sorted out with the PT's help is in order. So sorry to hear there has been a stall and hopefully that is all it is at this point. This whole hip ordeal is such a process.
Anxious to hear what your OS has to say.

It's been an ongoing thing. Recovery great in so many ways but things just never loosened up like last time and then saw decline in range of motion as I got more active. I've kept in contact with PT since released and it got to the point we both agreed that further evaluation would be good. If it is a psoas impingement, it is likely to just continue getting worse without treatment. If just a tight psoas, we can work on specific stretches to fix it.

Oh I hope you're feeling better soon!!!! But Im sure you'll be rockin and rollin ASAP!!! . I'm grateful for your sharing your experience. Today I felt like my PT was asking weird exercises of me at this point. Marching, side stepping... maybe Im just a chicken. And tonight, well 3am here as you can tell I'm not sleeping. .., I'm sore!

@Mascaramom - I won't tell you not to do PT - I believe the right person and the right regimen can be helpful. After THR, though, it should not cause pain. If you could do it before, but you can't do it now, give it time. If you couldn't do it before, give it time for everything to heal, then you can strengthen and expand your horizons. In my case, I've given it time (maybe they'll decide not enough time) so I'd like to make sure there isn't anything physical delaying my progress. So be willing to tell them no on particular exercises. The marching and straight leg raises are almost guaranteed to set off the hip flexor - better to be stretching them than contracting them.

Sorry they gave you a sleepless night. My favorite yesterday was standing on my toes-my body wants stretching. Like everything, people will be ready for different exercise at different points. Even my pt(an older woman) said, “ really, walking is best thing.”

Take it slowly @Mascaramom, you will get there!

I guess that truly is the right analogy - the concern is that it could be a psoas impingement from acetabular cup or screw - Work essentially that the screw is sticking into the muscle/tendon or that it's rubbing on something
Oh Sara, I hope that's not the case..how will they make sure its not that?

The PT will do some particular tests that can give them a better idea where the issue is. He'll be able to give me some stretches targeted to the issue and that will give us more information when i see the OS. as i understand it, if it seems to be related to the psoas, they'll scrutinize my next xrays more closely. They can also see an issue sometimes with ultrasound or do an injection in the psoas to see if the pain goes away. An MRI can also be used to see if there's an issue. If (big if - could be nothing) there's a problem, treatment depends on what's causing it but could include surgical lengthening or release of psoas.

Hopefully, I'll know more this afternoon. in the meantime, I'm not in agony and still better in most respects than I was 3 months ago. If I had to give up going up stairs, it wouldn't be the end of the world (and would be a good excuse to never let my trainer get me anywhere close to a stairmaster!), but I'd really like to be able to put on socks without gymnastics and pain!

Hi @SaraK
Hoping you get a break today.
Pain and worries....no fun!
With any luck it's temporary and soon settles.
Your recovery has been so good until now :tantrum:

Well, so far the answer is a "hmm, not sure." He hasn't ruled out an impingement but said it's also possible the range of motion issue and maybe even the psoas issue could relate back to when I strained or pulled something at the doctor's office at the end of January. He was glad I'd been resting things the last couple weeks. Now we're going to add in some bridging and stretches and then add different activities in one by one to allow us to identify any that are problematic (did say dancing could be the first but nothing planned on that this weekend). He's hopeful that massage (if that's what you call an elbow in the posterior), targeted exercises like bridging and stretching can even some things out - maybe putting too much load on the front of the hip.

I guess the good news he didn’t freak out with dismay over what he found. The way all of the muscles and tendons work together it is amazing that we walk. Hope the stretches provide relief. Thanks for sharing this.

You get the good with the bad - it's unrealistic for others if we don't tell both sides!

I guess if I'm not going to the gym, I have more time to watch the Olympics! And part of it like we watched TV as kids - on my tummy with my feet in the air - get my stretching in as I watch!

Hi there,
Well....you have a plan! That's a step in the right direction. Hopefully the source will be identified,
you can modify and move forward. Yay for a start!
@SaraK

Hope it eases soon...:console2:
