Hi @borymms4
@Pumpkin2 tagged me as I do have a non nickel knee.
My Thread 1
My Thread 2

The patch test is not the appropriate test for nickel sensitivies (aka allergy) so the Dermatologist's reaction doesn't surprise me. The blood test is probably the best indicator at this time and I highly recommend it as they test for all of the metals and one even tests the cement compound. Please consult either a Rheumatologist or Allergy Dr. for taking and interpreting the results of the blood test.

I am familiar with two labs that perform the LTT (Lymphocyte Transformation Test), Melisa and Orthopedicanalysis. If you order from Orthopedicanalysis my suggestion is Orthopedic Panel 2 as it also tests of bone cement compounds and titanium.

My results indicated a severe reaction to several metals as well as the bone cement compound. After an extensive conversation with my Allergist, I went forward with the nickel free implant even though it is cemented in place. I have had my one nickel free implant for several years now and so far so good.
All the Best

My blood was done at this lab https://www.orthopedicanalysis.com. One of the same that 1ELISEA mentioned. I too had the panel 2 done which tested cements as well as multiple metals. I was allergic to Nickel, Cobalt, & Chromium. I was not allergic to the cements. Read about the testing on their web site. It does say that rash is caused my cheap jewelry on the skin, but implanted metals show swelling and inflammation. But, please read up on it.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate everyone's helpful in put.

I have been finding pretty many of these now all showing the same type of rash on my knee all from nickel.

Those rashes look a lot like your rash, you must be relieved to find these photos.

Yes I am. Although rite now I think I m a bit overwhelmed with the idea of going through the whole process again.

Take it one step at a time, it is daunting to think about yet another revision.

While the Dermatology example above from 2009 is interesting, didn't they control it in that case with medication rather than replacement? The study of metal sensitivities continues to expand exponentially year after year even though it is still relatively small in 2016.

Probably a more recent study from Oct 2015, "Immune Response to Implants" completed by a Dr. Steve I Robin, associated with Orthopedics and Rheumatology would be helpful. He does a nice job explaining the possible metal sensitivities and reactions correlated with osteolysis and aseptic loosening of implanted metal hardware but appears open to considering other reactions as well. He is located in Illinois if that is a location available to you.

I do wish you well and that you find a resolution so that you can lead a full and active life.
Wish you the best!

I've done your signature for you.

I also deleted your post with ptinerest picture as I think it violates copyright.
I did copy and crop it and put it in your post.

But that picture about shows how dumb that dermatologist was! How are you getting along finding a new surgeon?

Thank u so much for ur help. I have been searching around to read up on surgeons and now that I have knowledge I will be calling this week. Although I kinda had a turn of events. My dermatologist did another nickel test on my arm and just got back from it today and it is positive. He said that he learned a valuable lesson to listen more to his patients. So till I find another surgeon, the dermatologist is calling my os and telling him I am allergic to nickel and I need to have a nickel free replacement,so now I don't know what to do. This is what i think and hubby too, think the problem is but if they r willing to fix it rite should I just stay with this os ? So much to think about, overwhelmed

The choice is yours as to which surgeon to use. However, even if you decide to stay with your current surgeon, a second opinion could be useful.

I agree with Celle, a second opinion will be helpful, to be sure there are no other problems. You may want to interview your present surgeon about how many revisions he does a year. He should be doing at least 50 a year.

I would also be afraid to just rely on the nickel test and get a nickel free knee. Like Bonnie @RunA42K said a complete panel of metal tests and cement would be a good idea and much more comforting if it were me.

I actually had a whole panel done with all 15 components of my knee replacement done. All were negative except nickel

Sorry, I must have missed that. I knew you were tested for some but I wasn't sure about all metals. I'm glad you finally got some answers.

No worries. I m glad I m starting to get some answers. But at least not matter what os I go to it know and have it on record of the nickel allergy now so I don't have to go through the testing again
