Hello my knee friends. I just got back from the patch test and they said the results were negative but I go back tomorrow to get it read again the dermatologist looked at my knee, the red rash and was quite surprized
I was truly allergic to my knee implant and it was removed. I had blood testing done because the OS said that the blood testing was MUCH more reliable than the patch test. I'd been through enough pain and agony so I wanted the best test out there to determine if I had a metal allergy. The test itself was $600 and the insurances does not pay for it, but I didn't care. $600 is much less expensive than the 3 knee replacements I've had. I NEVER had any kind of a rash like you, nothing. Just pain, swelling, lack of ROM, and always a warm knee. Even the doctor said after he took out my nickel knee that looking at the tissues there was no visual sign of being allergic. I'd get the blood testing done if I were you and not fool around with inaccurate patch testing. The blood testing consisted of giving up multiple vials of blood. The blood was then overnighted via Fed Ex to a special lab in Chicago (I live in Houston) there are not many labs who specialize in metal allergy testing. Once the samples arrived in Chicago different metals were introduced to multiple blood samples as well as TKR cements and they grow them for 6 to 10 days to get an accurate reading. Mine came back as highly allergic to Nickel and Chromium. No other metals tested did I have a reaction, nor the cement. As it turns out 17% of women are allergic to Nickel vs only 3% of men. The dermatologist doesn't know beans, ditch him and find a good TKR doctor!!
