Thanks everyone you have been so much help, apart from physio giving me exercises I came home with no support at all, they never even asked me how I was getting home,my husband had to go and find a wheelchair to get me out the front of the hospital.
No one asked if I would be able to manage in the bathroom at home, the wards I was on for the first 4 days were fantastic the ward I ended up on was terrible :(
I haven't used the ice yet,I slept on and off from 8pm last night taking meds when I needed them I think I needed to catch up on sleep!
So I'm just about to give it a try now :)

Morning Natalie,

Isn't it a weird feeling when they just boot you out of hospital! After my THR they just said "bye" and I walked out on my own (with crutches of course). Luckily I had BoneSmart!

Glad you are getting some rest. Take care and keep in touch!

Very strange!I felt a bit panicky last night, but I had no need to as hubby is being an absolute saint :)

And OMG the ice is helping so much!I just got a load more bend after using ice :)

Don't panic! :shk: Just come here. I had the same problem - especially when I was alone in the house the first few days. You will always get answers here.

Love that ice! But don't forget the meds.

Natalie,
Glad to hear you finally had your surgery and are on the road to recovery. You will do fine. Keep icing, elevating, resting, and doing your exercises. Each day you will find you are doing better and better. Sleeping may be an issue. Remember for every hour you were under anesthesia your body will require 2 weeks recovery..... as your body is not used to being totally still all that time. Pace yourself, and accept help from others!
Best of luck to you!

Nat, I'm so glad you're home! Congratulations! You made it! It only gets better from here (although there are those "two steps forward, one step back" days). I know you will do well!

I wanted to let you know I met with my surgeon, and he said there was no sign of active synovial chondromatosis in my hip! Yea! He did have to remove a lot of ossified loose bodies, but nothing attached to the lining. I am hopeful that after 21 years, I am done with SC!

Of course, Jamie is right---you should not put a pillow under the knee only. I should have made myself clearer. I would pull the pillows closer to my bum so that my calf and heel were resting on the pillows. That seemed to relieve the ache--or pulling which is from the back of the knee. It took some time for me to be able to stretch that capsule to get full extension.

But, jamie is also right, that is really not a problem that needs to be addressed right away--your comfort is vital to your rest at this time and it sounds like you need rest after that hospital experience. So, do what you have to do to get the leg comfortable and then try to get some solid sleep!!!

Also, for me for the first week or so at home, I took one percoset every two hours instead of two every four hours. It game me a better regulation--no ups and downs. After the first two weeks, the pain was much more manageable and I switched back to one percoset every four hours. (5/325 was the highest dosage I ever took) Kelly

Wow about them just saying bye bye and letting you go. Nurse was really good at setting things up to go home for us. Hospital also had rule that patients had to be seat belted after being loaded up into the car. Now that took a while. Glad you are home. Get some sleep and take your pills. It gets better day-by-day.

Thanks Hun you don't realise that the surgery takes so much out of you till afterwards there are lots of areas of me it has affected as well as my knee!!

I am sure if I had still been on the 1st ward I would have been treated slightly better but I ended up on an admissions ward that was abosolute bedlam constantly!

Hey!

I have been following your epic for a while, and I am so impressed with your 'up' attitude.
I probably would have offed either the Doc or any one of the nurses!!~!

The advice here is solid, and I have nothing to offer other than this takes a looong time to recover from.

I'm starting to feel somewhat normal, though I still dip into the pain meds if I overdo it. I was 5 months yesterday. Lots of ups and downs.

Don't compare yourself to any one of us. We all recover on our own schedule. Continue to ask questions, since we have all had the experiences you are having.

Rest, elevate, ICE and TAKE YOUR PAIN MEDS....You need to be comfortable.

Good luck and maintain your good outlook. It helps to be optimistic.

Sandy

Thanks Sandy Believe me I was very very tempted to kick off at the hospital but I have to say it wasn't the nurses or the doctors fault I feel the hospital itself is in trouble they have shut 2 wards in the last 6 months and they are very understaffed, there was 2 nurses and 1 auxiliary one night for 26 of us!!!
My time in HDU was amazing I had a one on one nurse who never left my side all night and she tried everything going to make me in less pain, she was so angry that she wasn't allowed to give me ice due to health and safety reasons!I'm
going to get her and the theatre nurses a huge present :)

The ice is helping but I am struggling to rest my leg has started twitching again and I just can't get comfy any top tips would be fab :)

Natalie, you might try a heating pad at the small of your back as you are lying down. That worked for my leg twitches at least some of the time.

she was so angry that she wasn't allowed to give me ice due to health and safety reasons!

I don't believe it!!!

They can make you unconcious by putting a cocktail of poisonous drugs in you. Then cut and chisel your knee open, glue in lots of steel and plastic, then join you together with metal staples. Then try to make you walk out. Now that is perfectly safe, whilst giving you a bit of ice is dangerous?????

It is two steps forward , one step back, but there are also the odd days when one step forward, two steps back:wink:

Good luck with the recovery, and be very careful when handling the ice:whis:

Thanks Jamie xx
The meds worked for a few days but don't seem to be having any effect now.

You know you were saying about pillows under your leg how did you have them?I am currently lay with one under my thigh down to my knee and then another right down to my toes is this ok?
