Hi Rebecca and Martha I am so sorry I didn't get on the SC board to update you for some reason I can't get on from IPhone!

Jamie I know Rebecca and Martha from another forum that we go on that is specifically for Synovial Chondromatosis,we have all had joint replacements now too :)

Martha are u sure u won't the gory details?
Well my surgeon spoke to me after the op in recovery and said it had gone well then he came to see me Friday night and had me in tears!he said he had never felt so nervous during an op and that he was holding his breath through the entire op and making sure he did the best job possible for this very young lovely blonde mum!that's when I started crying!
He said the knee was in a right mess and there was lots of SC which they have sent to histology and there was lots of scar tissue too.he removed it all which he said took quite a long time,he said the knee went in fine and that he had high hopes for my future:)
He said I would need to be on crutches for 6 weeks.
My knee feels very weird it feels like it's moving when I walk?I have managed to get to 30 degrees this morning!
I do still feel sick and dizzy but I feel determined and I will get this knee better!

It sounds like you have a caring and capable surgeon. I hope things continue to slowly improve for you - just a bit better each day. Have you been able to rest? Sending hugs & lullabies your way.

Hi Nat

So glad you got your op.

I can't believe they won't give you ice - I find it instant relief.

I hope your pain is manageable now.

I was surprised about your bleeding. I had drain tubes in both knees for a couple of days and they collected the blood, put it through some filter contraption and pumped it back into me.

I am day 8 now and just be assured every day will be better than the one before. I am in a St John of God rehab hospital and the care, food and facilities could not be better.

I am thinking of you and hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi Debbie lovely to hear from you xx Glad you are doing well :)
They were going to put the blood back in me but they couldn't get a canula into a vein after 6 attempts so they had to discard it :( it is still weeping blood too.
Today I got to 45 degree, but physio wasn't happy that I looked so green when I was up and walking!
As for the ice I will be doing as soon as I get home!

Hi Nat-
I had a horrible time too with needle sticks. One time they actually had to bring in an ultra sound to find my vein. They'd wake me up in the early morning for my daily blood draws and I would just cringe. I'd warn them I'm a hard stick. My poor arm was black and blue to be sure. In fact I have to go for another blood draw sometime this month for my yearly check up and I'm dreading it. I've actually gone in one clinic and they couldn't find my vein and have to go to another to get it done.

Boy you said they won't let you go unless you have 90 degrees ROM. I'm sorry but if they wait that long you might be in there for weeks! Don't get discouraged by what I say because it just might take you longer than most. But I feel confindent it will come. You remind them you are not their regular patient. As long as you see an increase you are working in the right direction and you will be fine.

Maybe you didn't get a cute PT but your doctor sounds awesome. Doctors that give a care are wonderful. You know he's fighting for you and that just has to make you feel great.

Very interesting that the doctor said he found alot of SC. Does he feel then the synovioum is still active? I was very lucky. My knee was pretty clean and he could only see the SC behind my knee. Hopefully this really cleaned you out and it will be the end of it!

Jamie- No I am not a lurker but I just might be in the future. It's lovely to join such an active group. On our SC board Rebecca mentioned your website so I'm sure there will be more of us joining you. SC tends to wreck havoc with a joint so there will be more people down the road with joint replacements. I should join Nat's thread to get acquianted.

Take care-
Martha

Ahhh, Martha....Natalie explained your relationship. I'm really glad you decided to come on over to chat with us here. But, alas....you now cannot be a lurker. Those are the people who read the forum regularly as "guests" but don't join. YOU are an official BoneSmartie now!!!

Hi Martha hope your ok xx

I'm still struggling with the knee bend!but I am hoping to do the stairs today and get home!I can't bear being here anymore.
He didn't say if the synovium was active but he did say he was very interested in it as he has never seen it before!
He is going to make it his business to research it More he says he thinks we should have a conference in Hawaii!!!

Yeah Natalie! :jump: Good ol' NHS - they chuck you out when they need the bed!

Hope the freezer is filled! Get that ice going soon! Get some rest too. The journey home can be very tiring.

Take care!

Yes the ice packs are in the freezer and funnily I have just asked physio again if ice will help and she laughed!
She said it wouldn't make any difference to pain or swelling!
It's about a 40 minute journey home so I am just going to rest from now till I leave xx

Glad you are going home. Have a safe drive. Try to get them to give you some pain meds before you get into the car. You will be home before you know it. It will feel so good to finally plop down in your own home!

Home now and feel like I have run a marathon today!just given myself my first anti coagulant injection and I have done 2 sets of my exercises and I have taken control of my pain!
Quick question,I have some ice gel packs do I put them in a towel and direct onto my knee?also how long can I ice for?
Did anyone else find it uncomfy to elevate their knee post op?it feels like it is being pulled too much.

Natalie....do wrap the gel packs in a dish towel. Then you can put them directly on your skin without risk of freezer burn. There is no limit to the amount of time you can ice. Do it as long as it feels comfortable.

Some will say that there is no benefit after 20 minutes, but frankly I found it comforting and a good pain relief to ice almost constantly. I just didn't change the gel packs until they were fairly well melted. Experiment and see what works for you.

And then send a note to that nurse and tell her she and her hospital are WRONG about not using ice following knee replacements!!! :D

Hi Natalie - so glad you are home and getting comfy.

My physio told me to ice 20 minutes with a towel wrapped around the gel pack (like Jamie says). After 20 minutes the ice is melted anyway so you go to round two if you need to. Just be sure and use the dish towel.

Take care Natalie. Update when you feel up to it. You are well on your way to recovery!

Natalie, my knee used to ache after being extended for a while. I figured out that my extension was not 0 at that time and the pull was from the back of the knee. If you put a pillow under the knee, it relieves the ache, but is not good for the extension. I found that if I pulled the pillows a little closer to me, the uncomfortable feeling would go away. Kelly

Do be sure not to put a pillow under the bend of the knee only. That can cause problems with blood clots. You should use support under the entire leg unless you are doing a "hang" exercise to increase extension. Then the pillows should be under your heel and you definitely will feel a "pull" as gravity pulls your leg into a straighter position. I would say it's too early for these "hang" exercises, Natalie......just concentrate on being comfortable for now.
