That is just perfect, Nat!

If the pain meds aren't working, contact your doctor and let them know. There are plenty of options.

I don't believe it!!!

They can make you unconcious by putting a cocktail of poisonous drugs in you. Then cut and chisel your knee open, glue in lots of steel and plastic, then join you together with metal staples. Then try to make you walk out. Now that is perfectly safe, whilst giving you a bit of ice is dangerous?????

It is two steps forward , one step back, but there are also the odd days when one step forward, two steps back:wink:

Good luck with the recovery, and be very careful when handling the ice:whis:

I know I was in shock too,the nurse was mortified at having to tell me!

I have Jamie apparently there is no more options!

I am on the maximum of what they can give and nothing else would help :skp:

I will give you a quick rundown of what I have had today

2 Paracetemol and 2 slow release Tramadol at 7am
5ml Oramorph at 9am
2Paracetemol at 11am
5ml Oramorph at 12noon
5ml Oramorph at 2pm
2 paracetemol at 3pm
5ml Oramorph at 4pm
5ml Oramorph at 6pm
2 Paracetemol and 2 Tramadol 7.30pm
It's now 8.20pm and I am still in pain, not agony just discomfort so I have the ice on it,I have also used the ice every few hours all day.

Thanks for the list, Natalie. I'm going to tag Josephine to have a look at it and see what she thinks. @Josephine:

If that's the case, then the ice and elevation will be VERY important for you. Just take things easy for a while to keep swelling down.

If you have a recliner chair, it may be more comfortable. It took me some time before i could handle a bed with the 2 legs done at once I guess. But it can make it more difficult getting up from a seated position so I had a platform made for mine to raise it.

Yeah, sounds just like the regime my sister was on before she had her hip done - and after when I though she had RSD. There's not really anywhere else to go. You have my sympathies, Natalie.

I don't think Tramadol is strong enough for this stage in the game. Not sure what the other drugs are in the USA version. You should be on things like Oxycontin, Oxycodone, then dropping down to Percosets and Vicodin..maybe hydrocodone....then Tramadol and later Darvocets after my little fall. That's pretty much what they did for me.

Thanks Jo I thought as much,90mg of Morphine from the pca pump in 24 hours didn't help in the hospital so I knew things were going to be tough at home :(
I will get through it hopefully with some determination!

I asked about Oxycontin and they said it was just another form of an opiate that would only give me the same effect as the slow release tramadol does :(

I'm not a nurse. I just know that Oxycontin is a very strong drug. It put me over into another world so it didn't matter if I was in pain.:shk: I had to have my dose lowered in hospital as I actually tripped out a few times and it scared the poo out of me. Tramadol doesn't touch what Oxycontin can do. I've never heard of anyone breaking into a drugstore stealing Tramadol. But Tramadol is a good drug for later. Just my opinion. Don't want to step on any toes. I never took morphine. But I guess you can argue Tramadol is synthetic morphine but it's really quite manageable if you can handle it.

I have been on Oxycontin before Helen but I'm not sure how effective it was back then,I will try anything though I am in an awful ot of pain today I seem to have taken those 2 steps backwards!

I wonder if it would be difficult to change from Tramadol to Oxycontin,I had a pain nurse at the hospital but I'm not sure of her number but I am sure I could find it and she if she can offer me some advice.

I seem to have lots about 20 degrees knee bend today :(

In no way am I suggesting you are a wimp, but there is an alternative to drugs.

I'm not suggesting this site is the best, because it's the first one I clicked on

Worth a try?

I tend to use this approach

Use the power of the moment-you simply start describing yourself as healthier and the pain going away.

I had CBT when I was going through a really bad stage a year or so ago and it uses the same sort of ideas,I have dug out all my old stuff and I am going to try and get back into it :thmb:

I'm on oxycontin 60 mg er 3 X a day and its been - ok...not great...not terrible...just thought I'd offer in my 2 cents...i think oramorph is stronger than oxycontin in my opinion...

xoxoxox,
Linda.

Natalie, if you are in pain, I would explore every option you have....talk to your doctor about trying other meds. Even if they didn't work for you before, they might now with this different type of pain.

I spoke to pain team and she thinks the tramadol oramorph combo will just be the same as oxycontin so said to just stay how I am for now, pain is a lot worse today but so is the bruising and swelling.

Oh forgot to say I told them that the ice had worked really well and how I wished I'd had it in hospital and they said they were surprised it had worked so well!!!
