Op was off - and then on again!

I can understand your concern about the stiffness. But it's also possible it is caused from swelling. Why don't you try going really heavy on the ice and elevating and drop back to 3 times a day for those exercises for a day or so to see if that makes a difference. You are still getting activity when you get up to go to the kitchen or bathroom....that counts.

Thanks Jamie I think I will give that a go,thankyou so much for you ongoing support I'd be lost without this place xxx
Off to try and get some sleep fingers crossed night x

Again...welcome home. Wanted to ask if you are icing both sides of your knee. The back can feel really stiff. Be patient, because stiffness is going to be part of the normal part of your recovery for about six weeks. It does improve

Natalie, I did exercises maybe once a day if I remembered! And by no means did I do them for 10 reps! I think you could cut that all in half and still get where you need to be. Like Jamie said, much of your stiffness is probably due to swelling. My surgeon doesn't even let his patients start serious exercises until week three to let the swelling go down first.

As regards the discussion about meds, I have this chart with gives the relative strengths of different drugs using morphine as the base line. Hope you can understand it!

But note the Tramadol: 100mgs is equivelent to 10mgs morphine which is both standard doses. Yet strangely, I found the Trams much more effective than morphine, especially when taken with paracetamol!

Hi Natalie
I have followed your story with interest and sadness that you are having such a difficult time. Compared to you, my own surgery seems like a walk in the park. I hesitate a bit to mention this possibility but you might like to investigate further: www.eftuniverse.com EFT is Emotional Freedom Therapy and I only know a very little about it. However I have a friend who is a practitioner of it within her counselling services; her husband recently had a LHR revision after only a year because it was found he had the wrong implants and they had loosened. The surgeon had huge difficulty removing the old implants and in the end had to cut windows in the femur to get them out. The whole point of this long story is that he was in extreme pain after the surgery and she was able to bring down his pain levels in just a few minutes from 8/10 to 2/10 with the "tapping" procedure. He can now do this for himself too, you don't need someone to do it to you. I don't know why I didn't try this myself weeks ago when my pain was at its worst.
Good luck to you for the next few weeks, stay strong.

Hi Barb xx

Yes I'm icing all parts of my knee both sides and underneath:thmb:

That chart is really intersting thanks Jo :thmb:I'm taking 400 mg of Tramadol a day and every 5ml of Oramorph is 10mg of Morphine Sulphate.

I think because they were so adamant about getting my knee bend to 90 degrees within a week that they have made me paranoid about it!

Thankyou Faith xx

It is a really interesting site I will have a look into it :thmb:

I'm hoping I will be in a whole better place within the next week or so.

Thank you Faith, it's nice to know I'm not alone is recommending a holistic approach to pain and healing.

Mrs Tykey pointed out to me the other day that when we get visitors who cheer up up, then the pain goes away while they are with us.

I have a positive approach to painful things. I NEVER say such things as "oh dear, it's so painful, I can't cope", and if anyone asks how I am, my standard reply is "ABSOLUTELY TREMENDOUS!!"

Of course drugs help, but aren't the total solution, so don't spend all your time "chasing the dragon" :D

Hi Natalie, did you manage to get any sleep last night? Hope so. Rest does make things a bit easier.

And has there been any improvement when you cut back on the exercises?

Good comment about feeling a whole lot better in a week or so. Just keep that thought. You are on the bumpy part of the ride - things will smooth out so!

Just to expand on this for the sake of readers here that might misinterpret:

"wrong implants" would not the reason for the loosening. Any implant can loosen because a) the cement wasn't forced into the shaft correctly or b) an uncemented implant wasn't a correct enough fit to encourage bone ingrowth.

It's also a standard practice to cut windows in femurs to extract the implant by 'knocking back' with a tool through the window. It's been a practiced technique for as long as I can remember when the stems couldn't be easily removed from above. It doesn't necessarily indicate a bad struggle, just a change of tactic.

Tykey that is so true about visitors helping pain, your mind is off the pain.
Jaycey I didn't get much sleep again,I just keep waking in discomfort but that was happening pre op so I'm used to it!

Aw Natalie! Hang in there girl! So sorry you are having such a rough time. Rest, ice and elevate for now I guess. Just takes a bit of time. :cnsl:

Oh - look how that TED stocking is biting into your poor knee! Just what it did with me. Are you still wearing them?

I had to wear those horrible TEDs on both legs and they went all the way to the top of my thigh where they kept rolling down and cutting into my legs...... Yick... :hissy:

So glad I don't have to wear those anymore......
