how about trying a sleeping aid - I'm on ambien and it really helps...

Natalie,

I am sorry that you are in so much pain!! My husband is morphine resistant---after surgery in the hospital, they gave him a ton of morphine but it did not touch the pain. then, they gave him dilaudid and the pain magically went away.

Is oramorph just more morphine? If so, then i think that percoset which is Oxycodene or Lortab which is hydrocodene might be more effective for you. I also agree that Tramadol is not strong enough for knee replacement. I took it at three months for occasional pain--my doctor calls it a "step down" drug. He gives it to people in lieu of oxycodene after one month.

My husband takes tramadol for his back---it made me terribly depressed with my first tkr, so be careful. They gave me the long acting tramadol and if anything, it is less effective that taking Tramadol ever four hours. It is a very short acting drug. With my first tkr, I also could not get proper pain relief. I was also on large doses of tramadol. When I switched to Percoset I found bliss!!! Bliss meaning an absence of pain!!! It was amazing to me what the difference was.

Many hospitals do not like to use oxycontin because it is highly addictive. perhaps you nurse might consider a change to oxycodone or hyrocondone instead of the Tramadol? mood changes are listed as one of the side effects of Tramadol.

I really do understand your pain as I went through this same thing myself. It was so wonderful when i finally had an end to the pain. Don't give up---call that nurse again. I had my husband call too---sometimes a male gets better service in a hospital setting. Disgusting but I was not ready to fight it back then!!! Kelly

Hi Kelly thanks so much for the great advice,I have been on Tramadol slow release for over a year now so it probably isn't working as well as it should,my main worry is how hard it would be to change from one drug to the other?
The oramorph is just morphine it takes the edge off but never takes it away totally and the Tramadol works for a few hours but not te whole 12 hours of the day!
I will get back on to my GP and see if they can help I suppose I have been hoping the pain would subside this week but it isn't yet :(
I'll phone them first thing xx thanks again everyone xx

I take 10 mg ambien at night to help me sleep...

xooxxo,

Linda.

Nat,

I'm sorry you're still in so much pain and not getting sleep. It may be helpful to try a different pain med. We are all different, and what works for one person may not work for another. They gave me Percocet when I left the hospital, and I could not stop vomiting. So they switched me to Tramadol and Phenergan (an anti-nausea which makes me super sleepy -- maybe that would help you sleep). That combo worked well for me. I tried to cut back on the Tramadol with Tylenol, but it didn't do a thing for me. After 6 weeks, I was allowed to start taking ibuprofen, and that has allowed me to cut back on the Tramadol.

I hope you get some relief soon, but I know you will get through this because you have made it through all these years with SC. And this time when you're done with the healing pain, you will not have SC pain. You will feel good!

Natalie, if your TEDs are cutting in that much, they could be causing the swelling. That happened to me while I was still in hospital. Where the tops of the TEDs were, I had a crease which was blue bruise underneath. I knew it was doing me more harm than good so I took them off on day 5 and never wore them again! My surgeon saw it the next morning (I saw him taking a good look at my bare leg and the stocking laying beside it!) and never said a word! And there's actually very little evidence that they are that effective and significant evidence that they are not! It's with the quangos at the moment, discussion how much money could be saved if they were abandoned.

Of course, I'm not actually recommending such action but .....

Oh my god Jo I do have a blue bruise underneath them!I took them off for an hour last night and when I put it back on there was more pain, actually it was more like a tightness.
I'm giving myself anti coagulant injections every day too so surely it won't do that much harm to remove them or maybe even just wear them overnight.

I take a break now and then from wearing mine - and I mean like a 24 hour break - I'm not tellin you to do this, just saying....

xoxoxo,

Linda.

I think that's what I'll do Linda xx

GP is coming out to see me tomorrow didn't want me to trek to the surgery which was very nice of them.

That was my feelings exactly and I was doing a reasonable amount of ankle pumps and foot rotations plus other normal activity. I was prepared to take the risk so I never wore them again.

Well I have taken them off for the night and my knee feels better already!

So hopefully when the doc comes tomorrow I will be able to get some change of meds and hopefully some relief to the pain.

I had staples and when they took them out, it felt just the way it sounds - they were plucking staples outta me!

xoxo,

Lin

Staples, no steri-strips. Staples didn't hurt coming out, except the one home health left in and Drs office later dug out.

Wishing you much luck on your Doc visit!

I think what you have is internal stitches that will dissolve in time, Natalie. That's what I had. Jo has a thread somewhere that explains the layers that have to be closed using stiches that dissolve with the final layer (top) using steri-strips. I don't think there's much difference between the two in the final result, except that the staples have to be removed at 10 days to 2 weeks and with steri-strips, they won't. Everything will heal and dissolve internally.
