Sami, you can take paracetamol with Tramadol and ibuprofen. Hope you're feeling better. You are at the worst stage, hang in there.

Nancy, how is your knee these days? I am finally feeling a bit of difference. Not every day, but most days. I am pushing myself to go up and down stairs using both legs. I haven't gone down stairs normally for five years, so this is a push. I'm slow but think the stretch is probably good because I feel like I am improving. I'm going to a former student's wedding tonight. Can't wait, I love weddings. Only staying for a bit. Bowed out of the reception because I don't think I can sit that long. And no dancing this wedding. My son, Jody, will be married in fall of 2013, so I have time to get ready for that. And Josh, the other son, no idea when his plan to marry is...maybe sooner. But I plan to dance.

I hope you are feeling better and better. I wish there was pain-meter. I'd love to be able to track my progress. I know it was much worse three months ago, but one month ago--not sure how I felt then...still feel tight bands when I walk, and sometimes I can tell it's swelling when I walk or stand, but I really do think there's been a shift. Hope this is true for you too.

Jane, i can walk fairly well, still can't run, although when I first get up I am stiff and tight. The clicking feeling is annoying , it feels like something is moving inside. I haven't done much exercise this week although I have been walking around the office. Going up and down stairs still hurts behind kneecap. It seems to be at a bit that I can feel 'crunching' so I don't know f it could be scar tissue. An achy pain wakes me in the night, despite paracetamol, and I have to change position. I know when I look back at how I was that there is an improvement, but I'm fed up being patient! I am hanging on to what my GP , that it'll be a year before I'm glad I had it done! Enjoy the wedding. My son, Ross, marries Meriel 7 weeks today! The time has flown in and before you know it you'll be dancing at Jody's wedding!

I did have fun at the wedding, great to see so many former students. One who is now pre-med, gave me so much appreciation for introducing her to writing and the world of poetry. Julia was a gorgeous bride, and David and I had a great time. I am glad I didn't push it and stay for the reception. I was pooped as it was, and we wouldn't have gotten home til well after midnight. I felt a little bad, like I was being a bit ungrateful or something, not to stay and celebrate, but listening to my knee is becoming easier.

Has your doc said anything about the crunching? Is that normal?

I don't know Jane, I haven't asked anyone!!!! I'm assuming it's okay. I can't over analyse everything, I'm trying to just roll with it and hope its fine at the end of the journey.

Am actually starting to enjoy being back at work.!! I just have to make sure I don't sit too long in one position or I get stiff.
I am pleased with my bend and after stiffness wears off I m walking pretty good.
The only problem is the pain I have across middle of kneecap when going up and down stairs, it seems to be when I take weight on a bent knee.
Can anyone tell me if this is ok at nearly 7 months?
Will it still get better or should I be going to see about it?

I am so glad that you are walking well. That is my goal for myself...to walk without so much of the tightness so that I have to think about bending my knee with each step. Stairs are hard for me too. But you do seem farther along than I am in most everything else. And how wonderful that you are enjoying work! Jane

Jane, I still get tightness and a huge bit is still numb. I still go every couple of weeks and get my leg massaged and she says she can feel a difference in that she can get further in to my knee than she used to.....or maybe that's just to make me keep going back! I am sure just walking a bit every day has helped. I still moan to my husband that it aches at night, I'm sure he's fed up listening to me, and it still crunches!

I'm get a bit fed up of this pain when i go up and down steps...it is getting me down.
Anyone else had this at 7 months ? And will it go away?

Hi Nancy, at 8 months I still feel some pain over my kneecap when I walk up and down stairs. Finally last week I feel confident to go up and down without holding onto the handrail. When I walk longer than 4km I get tension in my hamstrings and also shinsplints. When I saw Diane (Diney) last weekend she said it was nine months that the first knee turned a corner and felt "recovered".

Oh Margaret! I'm so glad it's not just me...I do get aches in calf and shin but I assume that's muscular , but the kneecap pain was concerning me as i hadn't seen anyone else mention that type of pain. I still get the tightness too.

Hi! girls! I am now 9 months post op and can go up steps without too much problem--need a handrail if there are lots of them. However, coming down is still a problem for me. I feel the pull and tightness across the top of the knee, particularly my left knee, and have to hold on to a rail to go down foot over foot. So often I just go down the old pre op way if I'm tired or don't feel like putting up with the pain. I'm sure I need to work harder at developing my quads, but I am so busy right now with things that have to be done at home. When hubby goes in to have both his knees done, some time in the next few months, I guess I'll do rehab with him and maybe this will improve. I just don't let it bother me right now.

You are not out there alone with this and it may just take a lot of time to get improvement!

Thanks all of you ..I'm getting over whatever crazy thing I did that wonked my kneecap (read my thread if you want but not so exciting) and now at almost 8 months I've been wondering if maybe what I'm feeling is somewhat 'normal'...so reading all of this helps!

At gym on Monday , my instructor thought I should speak to someone about the new pain across kneecap. I phoned the hospital to speak to arthroplasty team and was told to come in today (Wednesday)..excellent service I thought. Saw OS (first time since day after op) and he examined knee and took a series of x rays. Good news is that all is well and he is pleased with my bend of 130. He said I should not be doing any exercises with weights or leg press or stepper machine... Only walking , cycling and swimming. He said most people have to be told to do more exercises but he's telling me to take it easy!! It's sill sore but hopefully will get better. I told him about bonesmart and that there is a phone app to measure range of movementhe took his I phone out his pocket and downloaded it!

I guess there are a wide range of opinions because both of my OS docs have told PT to use the leg press ans a couple of other leg machines. One is foe extension, the other to help the muscle on the inside of the knee.

Sonja, I think Nancy has been pushing herself pretty hard. I've also been doing leg presses and machines where I have to lift a certain amount of weight that rests on my ankles. My guess is that Nancy's doc thinks she may simply have been working the knee too hard and that's the cause of the pain. I'm always questioning myself--am I doing too much or too little. My knee still gets very stiff an sore every day. I have a new set of phys. therapy sessions so I'm hoping to get some answers.

Hi Jane, maybe it's because he thinks range of movement is good. I don't know but am going to back off from weights anyhow. I've been trying to sit back on heels on the bed but he said not to force it any further

I'm sure you'll be fine. Just keep walking and little by little you will get there.
