TKR Getting somewhere at last!

I've been reading other posts, yes I know we shouldn't compare, but I read of people hiking, running , swimming etc. I've been going to the gym but have even told only to leg press 5 k, abductors just 2.5k. Cycle, treadmill. Am I doing enough? Knee does ache afterwards, clicks a lot and gets hot still.

Nancy, do you want to hike, run, swim, etc.? I haven't done any formal physical therapy since I was 6 weeks post op. I just started living my life, taking care of my house and yard, looking after my semi-invalid hubby, taking care of the cats. Got all my exercise just doing the normal things I always did before surgery. I am not an athlete--never have been. But I could do some hiking, swimming, and biking. Not the big time stuff the competitors here on the forum are into. And I could go dancing if I had a dance partner, but I'd never make on Dancing with the Stars. Maybe you are doing too much. Maybe you just need to get on with regular living and see how the knee adapts to that. Maybe you will have to lower your expectations for your knee and accept that it's not going to perform on the level you'd like. I just don't like to see you stressing over it all the time and being unhappy with where you are. Just my thoughts which you are free to completely ignore. Take care, keep us posted, we care.

Are you doing enough? Quite honestly, Becky, I think you might be doing too much!

Your knee still aches and gets hot - that indicates that healing is still taking place. It takes a long time to heal completely and you did only have your operation in January. I know that seems ages ago, but it really isn't.

It's nearly 7 months since I had my operation and my knee still gets hot at times. I don't expect that to change any time soon - so many people have said that full recovery takes at least a year. What's important to me is that I can do the routine activities of everyday life.

Now where is that person who posts the wonderful picture accompanied by the advice: "Patience, Grasshopper!" ? I think that picture should be a "sticky" for us BoneSmarties.

Thank you for the reality check...guess I'm just feeling a bit sorry for myself. Judy, you're right! I don't want to hike or be a runner . I'd like to run upstairs, for a bus, to catch a toddler! ......and sleep! I didn't do much in the way of exercise before op, certainly never been inside a gym. I'm walking a LOT more than I ever did, even before leg got sore. So, you're right! I just needed reminding that I'm not there yet but am better than I was and still got a way to go? Thanks Celle, I think I need to get back to work and just get on with living and accept it will still be sore, for the moment

Sniff, I'd like to be doing even a little but not there yet. Hopefully, someday I will be, but right now it's PT, ice, and very simple exercises.

So see, to me you are making huge strides by even cycling at the gym. It's all relative.

Hi Nancy,
Were all all doing this at our own individual pace. I went for a swim last night and could hardly sleep as my knee was angry. I think we just have to be thankful if we have OK ROM, little pain, and no infection. If we can get back to our normal routine and know things will improve than that is really something to value. Goals are fantastic, but lets all see where were at in a year. That seems to be a good point to judge ones improvement. I know I'm moving better, have less pain, and can do most things, but my goals to: walk long distance, ride my mountain bike up and down steep tracks, swim long distance, and to be fit again are just icing on the cake. If we can enjoy a pain free existence that is really the best reward.

Nancy,

As you have heard, everyone heals at their own pace. Sometimes when we hear that, we are thinking, why am I not one of the people who had a spectacular recovery?

Answer, no one has the answer to that. Sorry  I wish I could tell you that it will change for you tomorrow, but only your knee can do that for you.

I have been through 3 knee surgeries on the right knee in the past 2 years. I don't let it get me down for long. The last one was 6 weeks ago, and I am working hard in therapy to get back to living!

I have been going to the gym every other day, till i start back at work. I don't do that much and isn't really painful but it does get a bit stiff and definately hotter a few hours later. I know that is blood flow and means healing is happening. question is , am I doing too much to cause the heat or is that a good thing, providing it doesn't cause me real pain?

Now I have a new pain! I am walking well, rom is good but now I am getting sharp pain behind kneecap when I go up or down stairs.! When I flex my leg when sitting with my hand over my knee I can feel lots of crunching, different from the clunks I also get. Any suggestions? I wondered if its scar tissue and will it go away? Feels like the pain I had before op :hairpulling:

Back to work today, just for a few hours. Knee Feeling no worse for my day out ..yet , but I am tired.
Didn't do much at work as the computer has deleted all my passwords and I couldn't sign on!
Think I need to change my thread title to 'getting somewhere at last!' Jamie; ?

Glad I found this site, seems to be answering all my current questions. I will be three weeks on 7/19. Can do steps, walk with cane, have also been told by my PT to do not overdo. I am not sleeping at night as well, taking Tylonel only which does not stop the burning.
Slow down as I have been told and somewhere down the road we will be normal once again.

Sami, id have been lost without this site to check I was 'normal!'
I wish i'd known about it before the surgery

speccybecky; Nancy, I have changed the name of your thread (per your request to Jamie)--I like this one--it shows that you are truly getting there---always knew you would!

Thank you....and thanks for all your support and gentle encouragent!
And the same to everyone else..I couldn't have done it without bone smartie help!
 :thankyou:
I'm sure I'll have some more 'down' days and equally sure you'll all be here to help me.

Very sound advice by your PT---you want to work hard, but you need to practice patience and take it slowly. Better to take little steps and move forward than to take too big of a step and watch your progress slow down.

Those sleep issues, unfortunately for almost all of us, are quite normal too. They will subside in time and are also understandingly frustrating. Nap when you can and don't sweat it---many of us have spent many a night looking at the Bonesmart Forum or re-runs on TV while having the very same issues with sleep!

I am very, very glad to read of how you are moving forward! There may be a few downer days to come, but overall, you are doing super and will continue to enjoy even more fantastic days and a new, pain-free and active lifestyle!

Thanks Tim, for your encouragement.
I am still getting pain behind kneecap when going up and down steps. Will this go away eventually or am I stuck with it?
It is worse than before op.
On the plus side , I am walking better than before op and I don't think I'm limping!
Anyone?

Thanks, Judy, for getting the thread title changed. I agree.....the positive note is GREAT!!! Becky, you're doing just great. Recovery sometimes can take much longer than we'd like it to, but it's important to mark and celebrate those small steps that show we ARE making progress. You're getting there, hon!!!

I had pain like you're describing with the knee cap for quite a while. Mine eventually went away when my leg muscles became stronger. Hopefully yours will too.

Thank you. I have spent this afternoon walking around the house, even did the ironing , wearing my 'wedding shoes' to try and get used to walking in a heel. I haven't done that in years!
