TKR Getting somewhere at last!

I have been going to the gym every other day. I don't do that much and isn't really painful but it does get a bit stiff and definitely hotter a few hours later. I know that is blood flow and means healing is happening. question is , am I doing too much to cause the heat or is that a good thing, providing it doesn't cause me real pain?
Not necessarily! Hot also means inflammation and that means you're doing too much! Now you say "I don't do that much really" but what is your idea of 'not much'? Bet it's a whole lot different to mine!
Now I have a new pain! I am walking well, rom is good but now I am getting sharp pain behind kneecap when I go up or down stairs.! When I flex my leg when sitting with my hand over my knee I can feel lots of crunching, different from the clunks I also get. Any suggestions? I wondered if its scar tissue and will it go away? Feels like the pain I had before op :hairpulling:
Another sign that your idea of 'not that much' is too much! Your knee is telling you something - probably

Oh, Nancy, I have the same dilemma. AM I doing too much? Not enough? Who do I listen to? What is my knee telling me? If I'm honest, my knee tells me not to do anything--stand or sit or walk or exercise--for too long. The only thing it likes for a long stretch is icing and elevating or sleeping.

I am going to track down the massage person today...so far no reply to my calls. Jamie's message made me think of something the Physician's Assistant told me--"You only need to do two exercises--straight leg lifts with a light weight...and standing from a chair without holding on to the arms. Twenty minutes of this is enough." I'm not sure why she didn't encourage knee slides, maybe because the standing/sitting took care of bending the knee. But I haven't been good about doing the straight leg raises, and my quads are probably not strong enough to help with climbing stairs. Maybe. .

I've been following your posts regularly, and I think you are doing really well. Perhaps doing too much sometimes. Do you agree with Jo about that? But also taking great care of your knee by taking so much time off work. Patience. And ask yourself throughout the day, "Am I being kind to my knee?" I am doing that more often now. And I have a new way to answer when people, many of whom wonder why this is taking so long, but genuinely are hoping I'm doing better when they ask how my knee is. "Oh, thanks for asking. I am taking such good care of my knee this summer." (end of story)

Hi Jane, really tiring being back at work but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
At the gym I do 15 mins on bike, 20 mins on treadmill (5.5 k per hour speed), 3 mins on step machine, 3 x 10 leg curls @ 5k both directions and 3 x 10 abductors, both directions. This is every other day. Josephine; ? Other days I just walk and do heel slides randomly! When sitting I pull knee so far under me then it stops and I pull further with my hands and it clicks/crunches and moves a bit further.
I didn't think the heat was a bad thing just a sign that I was healing. I still take the cocktail but not as often as before and not every day but almost always at bedtime....still wake up a lot

Hi Nancy! glad to hear that your return to work is going pretty well. I think you're doing really well with your exercises; maybe just do 3 times a week for now, or even 2, till you've been back at work a while? I find that my knee still gets warm sometimes after very little activity, and I just ice it if I'm at home and can. I just thought that might be normal for a while yet.
Hope things continue to get better and better.

Linda

Thanks Linda. I thought that too , that heating up was ok , Josephine made me think twice.
Hope youre doing well

Nancy, I've posted a story on my thread Slowly Healing that may make you think twice about just how much (it sounds like a LOT) you are doing, especially since you are now back at work. I'm not sure why your knee would feel hot if it weren't inflamed. Just a thought.

Yes, it's not always easy to understand precisely what the knee is telling you. But usually a good plan is if you have pain that lasts or an activity causes you pain, ease up on it for a day or so and then try it again, but down a notch. If that's good, then slowly work up to the level you were doing when you had the issues. Trial and error seems to be the name of the game.

Second week back at work, tomorrow will be first time doing 2 days in a row. I was on my feet most of today and am aching now and tired as leg has been aching during the night :hairpulling: and waking me up. Looking forward to the weekend and watching opening ceremony of Olympics on tv :martini:

Nancy, hope you are feeling well after your week of work. I am doing well. Did a little too much on the bike at the gym...it felt so good while I was biking. Actually worked up a sweat. But then I iced and raised my leg a lot. So this morning it feels good. Since my husband is away taking care of his dad in California, and my kidney stone is out, I can really focus on rest, ice and exercise. I feel nice and focused. Have a great weekend.

Sounds like you are doing well ow. How many weeks till you go back to work?
How long we're you on the bike.....static?

Instructor at the gym has told me to stop the leg exercises and just do bike and treadmill to see if a couple of weeks off will help with the kneecap pain when using stairs

Okay, I don't know how to "whisper" online, but I was on for forty minutes. Too long, I know. But I loved feeling like a normal exerciser. Today I've been doing errands, icing and resting. Just a bit of stretching and some leg raises. It is so hard to give in to being "careful." Do you feel that way too?

If you felt ok after it then it's not too long for you. I don't think I'd have the stamina but then I was a real couch potato before , all my hobbies involved sitting down! I long to be able to get up and just feel 'normal' and not to have to think ..or groan, to speed up and run across a road. Catch and play on the floor with my sisters 2 yr old grandchildren. Olivia and Noah are at a really cute age

No, Nancy, it was too long. I realized it as soon as I got off the bike. I'd love to be able to go for a long walk. I used to walk four miles every day unless the weather was really miserable. And I haven't been able to sit on the floor in our morning circle with my students for years. I did love to walk and hike but I am by nature a reader. So, I'm pretty sedentary too. Run? I can't imagine that ever happening again.

Juniper, just rest a bit and then do a bit less the next time...easy to say to someone else isn't it!
On another note I was at gp for something not connected to knee and asked her how long should it hurt. She recommended stopping gym work for a couple of weeks to see if it eases up and if it doesn't she will refer me back to hospital as i am not due back there till a year after surgery.

Nancy, I have another round of PT scheduled, and am still trying to connect with the massage person. Hopeful. And yes, I will do less the next time I'm at the gym. Have you seen Chris, Jamie and Tim's responses to John in the thread "Back home in PA? I found them incredibly helpful. Not sure I quite understand the pain cycle, but I will be rereading them just to keep myself on the right path. I'm at work this week and I'm bringing a pillow and ice. Plan to do meetings with my leg up. :)

I read it Jane. Very confusing! I guess I thought that by this stage I was over all that ice , elevate , rest stage.
A sharp lesson!

Hi Nancy

I have been away for a while - holiday, family visits, family health issues , now sickness bug!!!! I hope to be back in action on Bonesmart now I am feeling better. I have been catching up with your thread and see you are back at work - well done! It is so encouraging to see lots of us TKR folks are getting back to normal and living our lives - how wonderful for us. When is the all important wedding? It must be soon. You are sensible trying out the shoes around the house; I did that and it was worth the effort.

Take care and be good!

Hi Jo, I wondered where you'd gone but life just takes over. I feel good when walking around , still get the click. Stairs have started to hurt right behind kneecap , dont know what that's about, and it clicks a lot going up/down stairs. Heats up a bit so occasionally get the ice out. I thought that'd be a thing of the past by now.
The wedding is in 7 weeks, the time has just flown in! My other son is to have a hip op 3 weeks before it so it looks like he'll be on crutches

Down day for me, 5 weeks, out and still have this solid burning pain from my calf down across my foot. Foot feels like the skin is paper thin. Taking ibuprofen every 4 hrs, during the day. Night time taking Tramadol with break through at two hours, icing at night as well. Working 4 hrs daily able to move and ice while there. I love this forum, nice to see others with same problems...
