Margaret I'm in Linlithgow just down the road from Winchburgh. Bangour no longer exists as a hospital , now St John's Hospital in Livingston, although I had my surgery in Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank. Are you originally from Scotland?

Hi Nancy, small world. I'm originally from Cheshire, but lived in Scotland so we could go skiing at Glenshee at weekends, which is where the avatar photo was taken.

Juniper, I thought I'd swoosh this and be back at work sooner but it's just not like that. Did they think you were limping for the fun of it? As you say this site has saved me many times!

Nancy and Juniper. Unless people have been through this or know a couple of people who have been through this, they really have NO idea. The other day someone asked me if my energy level was low because I had lost 20 pounds since January. I said, "No, it's because of the surgery. It supposedly takes a few months to get your energy back." She was surprised. There's also the ones who think that if one person "breezed" through it, that's the norm for everyone. This is such an individual kind of recovery. I have a friend here who had her surgery 2 weeks before mine. She's having a really bad time with the pain because she can't take any of the stronger pain meds -- allergies. So she's "plugging along" with regular OTC pain meds.

I'm SO glad that we have our support group here with a wonderful group of friends. Take care. We'll get there one step at a time.

I still have bad days and good days. Knee still heats up. I went to gym yesterday, didn't feel like I did much but ached afterwards

One of my good friends and fellow teachers good-naturedly called me"Festus" after the character on the Gunsmoke TV show from the '60's!

Tim, did the nickname stick? Are you still Festus?

Nancy, that's good to know -- about the good days and bad days. I guess I won't worry about Magrat feeling achy "off and on" for the past couple of weeks. It didn't seem like I did much yesterday either.

Hope that you have a relaxing weekend.

I had a great week in Gran Canaria, it was very hot. I used a lip block spf30 on my scar as I was a bit wary of the very hot sun and apart from a paler line on my tan it's fine! Most of my pain now seems to be from my calf muscle which keeps going into excruciating cramp when I bend it as far as I can. I also started feeling it when I go downstairs. It also happens several times in the night and wakens me. I sleep with my legs bent and am trying to train myself to stay straight! Does anyone know why this is happening and if it will get better with time?

Nancy, i don't know, but magneseum and tonic water popped to mind. Not neccesarily together. Is magneseum good for leg cramps. Not, sure, but it came to mind.

So glad that you were able to go to a sunny place, Nancy. I would think Jo might know about a way to alleviate calf cramps. Your surgeon might be able to suggest something too.

I am just finishing up packing in my classroom. A very hard two weeks, but the end of work and the beginning of a summer break is in sight. Yes!

Yes, magnesium as well as calcium and potassium are great for leg cramps and bananas are an excellent source of both the magnesium and potassium minerals. I have several bananas in my kitchen right now because with the surgery and I was anticipating leg cramps and thus added a banana to my daily diet.

Try a bar of soap in your bed for night time leg cramps. My husband suffers with night time leg cramps, they only occur now when we leave the soap out. We use Ivory soap, but any brand will do.

Hi Nancy
I am pleased your holiday was good and you had some of that sunshine!! The legs cramps - you could try tonic water. My Mother was told to drink it when she had a bout of leg cramps. She was told to drink it in the evening (you could always put a gin in for good measure :)), she didn't of course! Take care.

Have tried the soap and tonic water(minus the gin) doc gave me quinine tablets to try. I'll try the bananas too! Jo I assume that's your wedding outfit? You look great! Juniper , enjoy the summer off, you'll be much improved by the time you go back.

Nancy, I'm curious about the suggestions--magnesium, potassium, bananas, a bar of soap in the bed at night? I am feeling the possibility of normal walking...not there yet, but I am so much better than I was when I was packing up my classroom and on my feet all day. Soon. Soon.

I am walking quite well, am still aware of clicks and crunches think that might always be the case.
If I catch my foot on something or accidentally kick a chair or table leg or similar then the pain right up my calf in to knee is horrendous. My husband just says 'don't kick it then!'....like I do it on purpose! Did anyone else have this and will it, go away? I still can't run for a bus or even go up/down stairs in a hurry!

Run for a bus? Go up and downstairs in a hurry? Are you kidding me? Walking very, very slowly, anywhere, is fine with me. I haven't run anywhere in years. And tell your husband to help you when you're walking on rugs. Don't you sometimes wish we TKR-ers could help each other? I do. Off for my vacation tomorrow. We've rented a house at the Jersey shore. Right on the bay. I can't wait. Even if I can't walk on the beach or walk into the ocean to swim, I will be so happy just to smell the salty breeze.

Have a great holiday. I did go in the sea when I was away but seabed dips quite sharply and it was a struggle to get out. The tide was on the turn so undercurrent was strong and If I was knocked off my feet didn't know if I'd get back up. I was on my own as hubby cant swim and it would've taken him ages to realise I hadn't come back to sunbed! So I didn't do it again! I had no trouble with la deer at pool. I ve just been to gym today and very sore now, can't think why as I didn't do any more than usual....think I'll get ice out! Boss is pushing for me to go back to work.
