They used Steinmann pins (metal rods) and cables. and then antibiotic cement was placed in the gap. The Dr was telling my husband all about how he applied the tension to the cables and how it worked to keep the leg straight.

That is some spacer. What a disappointment to have to wait another 2 months. Lets hope the time goes by fast.

@KarriB I know I am lucky to be there and have the doctors that I do. It could have been so much worse. I have a lot of people watching out for me...with lots of prayers:)

I`m resting up today and have just sat and read through your entire thread. Oh my word! I have laughed, cried, held my breath, been up, been down and in all have been totally riveted. You are amazing. It puts all my whingeing into perspective for sure. Roll on March - or sooner, I hope.

Very, very best wishes to you; what an inspiration you are! :wow:

Sounds as though you`re a trooper too, @KarriB with all that you`ve been through with infection etc. Will read your story next, if that`s ok.

Far from being scary, these stories really are inspirational and such an encouragement even when things seem to go wrong. PegGar16, your resilience and fortitude is amazing! I was so engrossed in reading this story that my husband wondered why I hadn`t commented on the fact that while I`ve been sat here, he`s managed to seal and grout a whole wall and is about to start on the next! I hadn`t even noticed! I did get up and make him a brew and some lunch though :)

One bright aspect of waiting is it gives your grafts additional healing time.

You have been thru so much and I agree the medical professionals at times do not seem to care much about the patient's timeline. (Or pocketbook)

Sprained my knee 90 days post op. It would not heal. Long story short after multiple aspirations, cortisone and peroneal release I have been diagnosed with a staph infection for a year at least. Pain, stiffness, patella not tracking in the groove. Lack of sleep and missing out on life. Kept telling the OS office something is wrong. Fortunately it's a small colony varient of bacteria and should not require more than a washout and spacer change.

But you are an inspiration to soldier through like you have, as we all understand the hardships. It's difficult for others to understand how the emotions are impacted when you fall into that 1% with complications.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate the encouragement especially when I have the bad day. I have been so busy reading everyone else's thread I forgot to get back to my own:)
@Bikesouth Thanks for understanding...looking at your list I think you probably understand. The grafts are looking good! My plastic surgeon likes to tell me how beautiful the flap is...lol.

I am still waiting on a definite date.

Tomorrow I get to visit my ortho docs at the VA...Problems with the right knee...grrr

Oh no. Hopefully a shot will help.

I know how you feel! I'm putting off my left and have a set of shots soon.

They have set me up for some hyalgan knee injections. They chose not to give me a cortisone injection today because they do not want to take any chances with possible infection and the upcoming surgery. I also have to check with my Mayo OS that it is OK to get the injections. Everyone is being extremely careful about what I have done to me:) Hopefully I will get a surgery date this week.

Hoping they figure out something for your other knee while you are waiting. :fingersx: that you get your date soon!

I'd be extremely careful too! I got a nasty cut on my left leg and everyone in my family was freaking out, wanting me to see my ID. It's hard not to worry. My cut is ok, took a while to scab because i took off a layer of skin.

@PegGar16

I'm just catching up on your story. I can't believe how much you have had to go through! I hope the next surgery works and you will be ready in plenty of time for the wedding. I'll definitely remember your struggles as I deal with mine.

Finally got the date...February 27th!! I know it is only a couple of days earlier than they were talking about in March...it just sounds closer:)

To all the prayer warriors out there...can you say a couple for my husband please. He went in to have an ablation done on his heart today and is now in ICU because his blood is too thing to take out the sheaths in his legs. They have been testing his blood for the last 7 hours (every 1/2 hr) and his levels just keep bouncing around. Thank you!!

I'll be praying, Peggy. Yes, Feb 27 does sound sooner! Just about a month away!
