THR Cpollock Surgery June 19, 2017<

I hope you are right @GrannyC on the restrictions. Are you able to tie shoes and put your socks on without an aid Then? It is great having good Noah here, will be taking him home this afternoon later. I will let him choose something to do after lunch. We can do the play centre at macdonalds or ruckers that has all kinds of arcade games which he loves.
@Cisne thank you for your kind thoughts. I will discuss my questions and concerns certs with my OS on the 25th but at least I know I'm healing ok and my x-rays look good.
I woke up at 230 and got up to go to the washroom and noticed my back was stiff. It took a while to get comfortable and back to sleep the woke up at 4, dozed til 5. Then noticed my back was worse. So I laid on my back and got up at 630. I'm tired and could use a nap but plenty of time for that after Noah is home. I took tylenol and it helped some. He's playing cars with Grampa right now.
I hope you all have a great day and I wish you well. Cheryl

So sorry to hear about your back, Cheryl @cpollock
Achy backs are no fun! I've been there, more than once. I wonder if your back got a bit out of line hanging with Noah?

Regarding restrictions, I was reading above that @GrannyC didn't have any restrictions with anterior (90 degree rule) I had posterior and brought up the 90 degree rule at discharge. By the time you go in for surgery you're pretty well versed in all the lingo, at least I was, I read a lot. I was told the 90'degree rule was no longer imposed and advised to move slowly letting my body guide me as to what I should / shouldn't do. I did abide by some of the restrictions, though self imposed, out of fear of dislocation. Reading how painful that can be kept me mindful of my movements for sure!

Hope your back feels better soon and you continue to gain stability with your cane. It's a process for us all, with different twists and turns. Wishing you a straight path and a great week!

HI @Layla my back is a little stiff but improving. I may have overdid it a bit with Noah some but I think I maybe slept funny. It was fine when I went to bed. And you're right about dislocation, who wants that to happen, yikes. Noah is home now, had a fun afternoon at Ruckers fun center then went to dairy Queen. I hope to be able to have my granddaughter Everleigh come soon for a sleep over soon but she's only 1. So I need more energy than I have right now, hehe. It will come. I wish you well. Cheryl

Dairy Queen is my absolute favorite....yum scrum. Peanut butter parfait. Salted peanuts, hot fudge, and salted peanuts. Good as it can be til you get to last 2,inches, you've already eaten too much, it's melty, the peanuts are soggy, and you go ahead and slurp up the last bit, groan....and you don't want another one for at least 6 weeks.
Glad you had a good day @cpollock !!!

Haha! Agree!!! @Mojo333
Just went to DQ with my daughter and granddaughter last week.
They try different things but I'm faithful to that good ol' Peanut Buster Parfait!
Whoever thought up that dreamy concoction was genius. Scrumpdilicious!

What a pretty name, Everleigh @cpollock
Yes, at only one yr old......you better rest up for that one....or have help!
Adorable age but quite the handful.

Chery, @cpollock sorry about your back-- I hope it relaxes itself soon, and you keep quiet building up energy for Everleigh-- and that is a MOST beautiful name!!!

Voting for the top twirl of a choc/van chocolate dipped cone, and then toss it....DQ not my favorite. Let's talk about Baskin Robbins!!

Cheryl, I looked back at my thread and see that I stopped using my dressing stick around 5-6 weeks. I never did get one of the sock things. I needed the compression hose for the first 2 weeks and needed help to get those on. After that I used my dressing stick to manage socks. Finally I could do the socks and tie my shoes by 6 weeks. I was able to do both those things prior to surgery as well. It was a struggle at times but I managed. One big thing is that I don't think I waited anywhere near as long as you did to have my surgery. I did limp some prior to my surgery but only used a cane when walking along distance. Finally I had enough and decided in surgery. I was concerned that my limping might cause other problems s and I didn't want that to happen. So the fact that I wasn't as bad as you prior to surgery is probably a factor in our recovery rates as well.

I hope your back feels better. I, too, have issues with my lower back but not too bad. I think it is actually a very slight bit better since my surgery but very slight. I actually had hoped it would vanish after surgery. My OS said it wouldn't help my back but I still thought it might but he was right. I guess this is just all part of the joys of aging and reaching our golden years :heehee: I'm speaking for myself as you still have a lot of years to go!!

Mmm - a stop at DQ about now sure sounds good!!

Cheryl, I should probably clarify my statement about socks. I cannot put my operated foot over my non operated knee to put on socks. I still need to bend and the way over to put the sock on the operated foot but I have no restrictions so that is ok. Eventually it would be nice to have the ROM to be able to put that foot on the other knee. OS said that was a good possibility but not a definite. He said many people can do it but definitely not everyone. Very, very gradually that goal gets closer but there is still a ways to go. I'll keep, working on it bit by bit.

Haha @Mojo333 I too enjoy the peanut buster parfait but I order it without peanuts. I prefer just the iccream and not crunchy. I usually have a jack and jill sundae, that's half marshmallow and half hot fudge.
@Layla must be summer, gotta stop at DQ sometimes. I never heard of the name Everleigh til she was born. They call her Evers most of the time. Once I'm more stable and can lift her out of the crib she will start sleepovers too.
My back is still tender and sore but manageable, I don't want this hanging around for long though. It doesn't do much for my progress. @zauberflote we don't have a Baskin Robbins here, we have 3 DQ locations. We do have a Swirls that is only open may to September and they have all kinds of hard ice cream and they have the best soft iccream in chocolate or vanilla or swirled together. It's not a sit in place, you eat outside if you can get a table or in the car.
@GrannyC that's great you can manage socks and tying shoes without an aid. I sure hope I can also one day. For now I use the sock aid which I've been using for the last few years anyways. My shoes are slip on schetchers so I just use the shoe horn. I leaned heavily on my cane a year before surgery and occasionally used a walker too. I notice my operated leg is still significantly weaker yet than the right leg but is improving.
@MyAussieGirl the pecan mudslide sounds good, I'd probably have it minus the pecans, hehe.
I hope you get to see your grandkids before summer is over @Gone again How old are They?
Have a good day everyone. Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, @cpollock
I have heard the name Everleigh before but spelled "Everly"
I like your granddaughters spelling better.
A great week to you!

Hey Cheryl! @cpollock I don't actually think I've ever paid attention to the DQ menus, because all these fancy things people are mentioning sound amazing and worth a try!!!! And your Swirls, that sounds really good too! I had some great homemade hard ice cream last Friday after my out-of-town OS 2-week followup. Good thing there's not an ice cream store near me now! We lived for 23 years raising kids within walking distance of the BaskinRobbins, and that was very dangerous for me!! The kids loved it-- a 10 minute walk to ice cream paradise, 31 flavors every day! I mostly was able to refrain, but sometimes you just have to stop in.... I'm sure ice cream of all kinds is helpful in healing-- can't put a price on that!

@GrannyC did you have anterior? I'm thinking that if you were once able to put your socks on with foot-to-knee, you'll get that back. I certainly did for the first hip, and expect it for this current one. You sound like one who will persevere, and I wish you all the best with the ROM-- you can do it!!

@Gone again bless you man, you just brought back a "lifetime memory" of my grandfather!! We'd go visit them for a week or two in the then tiny village of Bennington, Vermont, usually in August so we could see the Bennington Battle Day parade and get all the fun and games that comes with Main Street gussied up. Grampa used to take us girls out at night (just a couple of blocks walking to the Four Corners) to the popcorn stand, and we'd get fresh-popped popcorn with real butter all over it (n my memory of course). At night!! In the dark!!! Staying up late!! That was SO much fun!

I love your memory of your grandfather @zauberflote, I could visualize it. My one Grampa passed away before I was born and the other one was a little gruff. My Gramma lived 3 doors up from me and I had a lot of happy memories there.
I'm hoping that I can put socks on soon. I'm going to ask PT tomorrow when I go for my assessment. They may be able to show me a safe method.
I wish you all well. Cheryl

I've missed a few days... catching up on the ice cream comments is priceless!

@cpollock I hope the back issue is easing. I had that on and off while waiting for my surgery date... it's the worst. It seemed to be triggered by me tensing up... Hopefully a bit of rest will help.

I'm so encouraged @zauberflöte and @GrannyC for the ROM and dressing info. I am slowly able to reach more than I was before (tomorrow is 6wks). It's helpful to read about others' improvement. We'll get there @Layla and @cpollock .... slowly but surely.

You bet we will @313Lola thanks for checking in. My back isn't getting worse, a muscle strain I think. I've had way worse in the past.
My hip is still swollen and a little tender to touch but a smidge better each day. Other than that, limping around mainly because of my stiff low back, hehe.
I was feeling down when my grandson Noah went home yesterday. I may have to get him this weekend again, just for a night maybe instead of the whole weekend. He brings life into my quiet home and I smile and laugh with him.
