Revision THR Another Second Chance

Cue scene change music.

Doc just called. Seemed like a nice check-in type of call. Told him all of the progress I’ve made and how things are going in general. He was very happy to hear it all.

Then he brought up some new info from his end. One of the tissue samples he took from deep inside the hip joint has turned positive for a fungal infection. He will send me to an infection control specialist and we will see what’s going on. Probably start a round of anti-fungal meds. Waiting for his assistant to call with more detail and the specialists info.

Oddly enough, I’m watching an episode of House on the telly. Haven’t watched this show in years!

Aww, I'm so sorry.
Prayers that it's a short detour and all is remedied quickly. :prayer:
@inthe beginning

Hopefully they can get whatever it is taken care of really quick and get you back on the mend.

Wow, now that's some phone call. I'm so sorry, but it sounds like your Surgeon is on it!! I like to think positive thoughts and it has to be good news that you are currently doing and feeling so well, right? Please keep us posted and hopefully you will report soon with some good news. :console2:

Oh my stars @inthebeginning
I don't like to hear that you have this complication as I know how anxious you have been to get this recovery show on the road.
Apparently this is fairly rare so I hope you feel your OS is all-in on dealing with this. The infection expert is certainly what I would expect to be an important step.
Sending you all the best and please do let us know what the proposed plan is.

@Mojo333 Still waiting to hear back from the OS office to finalize the next steps. Almost 24 hours since the call and no follow up yet. I could take this to mean they aren’t super concerned? Still leaves me sitting here on pins and needles waiting.

Of course I was not in a position to take notes yesterday, so I don’t have the exact name of the fungal infection I popped positive for. Or which one of the five sites that this sample was from. The doc was very careful pre and during surgery to take samples to test for infection.

Remember prior to surgery, he aspirated fluid form the socket area which came back negative. He told me that he would take several samples and have them tested during the procedure.

This just stinks sitting and waiting.....

Only 7 days left of sticking myself in the stomach!

Ugh...needles! So glad I didn't have to do that. Sorry that you do.

I hope you hear back from your OS's assistant soon. My heart goes out to you in reading you feel like you're sitting on "pins and needles" no on wants to feel that way. Hopefully a game plan is put into effect soon and you can begin working through the process. Stay in touch....we're here for you.

Is that a blood thinner? My stomach is covered in yellow bruises from those injections but thankfully they didn’t follow me home.

I just called the office as it has been almost 24 hours. I asked to speak to the doc's assistant and was put on hold "While I get her". The front desk person came back on and said that "she (doctors assistant) said the infectious control medical office should be calling you today".

As I was writing this, the infectious disease office called!!

'A positive result showing Penicillium fungus from a blood culture' is the official diagnosis. I have an appointment tomorrow at 1300 hours.

P.S. Don't google 'Management of Periprosthetic Hip Joint Infection'. Not the best reading while you're laid up in the recliner!

Sure is a blood thinner! I was told I had to do these for 2 weeks at home. No big deal really. Just a few little bruises like you said!

I understand this is easier said than done, but try not to Google.
Wait until tomorrow and learn from the experts what you're dealing with.
We see people successfully dealing with infections on the forum and while it's a set-back and unplanned inconveinance, you'll deal with it. We'll be here to support you through it all.
Wishing for your peace of mind.

@inthebeginning So are we allowed to google Penicillium fungus? :) :-) (: At least you got a quick call back with an appt lined up for tomorrow.......you'll need to update us, of course!

@SE Florida you can if you want! I always try to arm myself with as much info as possible.

Looks like I’m a 1%er! In an effort to stay positive, the synovial fluid that was aspirated prior to the surgery did not pop positive for any infections. The other sites he sampled during the procedure did not pop positive. In fact, I would assume there were no positive test results during the procedure or he would not have continued. That means that this one positive result has recently turned positive within the week after the procedure.
