Revision TKR Totally recovered at last!

I am so sorry that you have to endure another surgery. However, it sounds like your employer is understanding & willing to work with you. And, you've found an OS that understands what needs to be done in order for healing to begin again. Now it's just a matter of semantics in terms of when. In the mean time, do what's best for you by taking care of yourself; both physically and mentally. The unknown is one of our biggest stressors! ((Hugs)).

LTKR-12/6/2015

Stopping in to say hi and see how you are doing. I understand about you having to have your finances straight before you have this second surgery. You had to spend so much in the past. Your daughter continues to be in my prayers. I know it would be better to have your surgery sooner than later and I also understand your other daughter's concerns about waiting until after tax season. Sooo many things on your heart and mind right now! I am praying for you to have clear vision, peace, and guidance in your decisions. Also, prayers for some pain relief!

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers. It's after midnight and I'm still awake. Fortunately I'm off tomorrow. My knees aren't so happy with me and have decided to have a six month party. I can't believe it's been six months now and I have to go back to the beginning again. Sometimes I just want to scream. At least this time I know a lot more than I did before and I know I have friends here with me on this forum to keep me company and answer my 'newbie' questions.

Glad you don't have to work today. Lay about and recover. I can't sleep either. One of those nights...frustrating.

Marian, I hate that you'll have to go through another surgery, but I LOVE all the good things you're finding out about your new surgeon! These great testimonials must be making you feel a little better about everything, right? (But I know it's still scary)

Hi there, I just hate that you have to have a revision. I feel a kindred ship with you and Braunzie because we had our surgeries on the same day. I will be glad when your new knee is in and you are truly on the recovery road. The best part about what has happened to you is that you were able to get a new OS to take you on even though you are only 6 months post-op. I hear most of the time you have to wait a full year. So from the perspective I guess you could say you are ahead of the game. Again, I am sorry you have to go through it again. Not fair!

I can't believe that I did absolutely nothing all day. I slept most of the day away. I guess I needed it! I had a shower and then tried out my bed again ( for the millionth time) but still couldn't find a way to get comfortable. I always slept on my side and no matter what the pillow configuration my knee hurts so I'll stick to my recliner.

I have some questions for @Josephine or anyone else who has the answers. I remember being told my kneecap wasn't tracking correctly a number of years ago. Should my OS have been able to know it was ok when he did the surgery? Did PT cause it to somehow get out of place after my surgery? I've been doing some research on revisions and they cite longer recovery times, increased chances of complications and lower success rates than a first time TKR. The lower part of my new knee extends out farther than the bones in my leg is that normal? I will ask my new OS about this but I don't see him for over a month and this is all saying on my mind.

Marian, i don't think you should dwell on the possible bad results of a revision. Most of the people we have on BoneSmart have had good outcomes from theirs. My revision, if anything, was easier to recover from than the original surgery.

I wouldn't recommend pursuing a case against your former surgeon because, in most cases, negligence is very hard to prove and the surgeons' insurers usually have deeper pockets than I would have.

Instead of the very slight, potential chance of a bad outcome, think instead of how much better your knee will feel than it does now. You have a good surgeon this time and I think you have every chance of a good outcome.

Should my OS have been able to know it was ok when he did the surgery?
Well, it's one of the many things a good surgeon will check both during and after implanting the prostheses but it's not an exact science and variations can occur.
Did PT cause it to somehow get out of place after my surgery?
Unlikely.

Of course they do! You want to write an article citing the possible hazards of taking a car, bus or train ride? Just because someone's made a list doesn't mean that they are common occurrences, far from it. I was reading the 2015 report from the Joint Registry UK and each of the issues concerned - stiff knee, chronic pain, soft tissue imbalances, delayed healing, infection to name but a few - rank at about 1-2%.
The lower part of my new knee extends out farther than the bones in my leg is that normal?
It depends. Do you have an xray you can post? Preferably AP and lateral.

@Josephine I do have Xrays but they are not in a type of file I've been able to access. I'm hoping to get my pc working again so maybe I can figure it out.

Hi Marian! Good for you getting some much needed rest. Amazing that your recliner is now your new sleeping place. Thank goodness for our electric recliners!
I am going to try elevating my legs tonight in bed and see if it will help my quad pain.
Babysitting duties again tomorrow from 12-6, thank goodness for my wonderful helper (hubby). Daughter's last day on her job so hopefully things will now be easier for her.
Still no surgery date.

@janway Just wanted to say hi and wondering how you are doing.

@Glamg1979 i hope you got some sleep last night. It took me a while to fall asleep and my dogs woke me up extra early. I wake up every morning in pain. It's a bit depressing but I'm not going to give up. I'm glad your daughter has you around for help. Is she starting nursing school now or next semester?

Marian, if you're on a tablet you can take a photo of the x-Ray and post it from there.

@KarriB I have the disk from the OS and I had someone at work download the files and send them to me in an email since my old laptop is giving me some problem. I need to download a free version of software to read it. I can't do it until I have a way to import the files from disk into my laptop.:banghead:

I'm feeling a little down tonight when I read about so many others who had surgery in July doing so well and I have pain almost all the time in my knee, IT band and quads no matter what I do. I take Tylenol and try to elevate and ice as much as possible and my pain level right now is at an 8 and I have been still for the last 2 hours. I have a couple of tramadol I got from my family doctor that I'll take in a little while so I might be able to get some sleep tonight.:sigh:

Hi Marian, finally got some sleep. Elevating my legs with 3 pillows that took the stress off my lower back and quads. Thanks for asking! Bonesmart friends are the best!
I know being in limbo is tough but I hope the virtual support from all of us is helping some. :friends:

Hi Marian, I hope you took that Tramadol and got some rest. Will you get the prescription renewed? It sounds like you should have a supply and not have to worry about rationing it. There have been times I want to fill the bathtub with ice and bury my leg in it.:ice:

Do you know what the file extension is on your x-rays. The file extension is the letters after the dot. For example, you might have .DICOM. I teach digital imaging. I'm not sure I can help with converting your x-rays but Photoshop might be able to do it. I can try it if you like.

Hang in there!:friends:

I hope you were able to get relief and some sleep. Looking at another TKR so soon after the last would be (for me) unbelievably hard to entertain. Praying for less pain for you right now.
