Revision TKR Story of My Knees by RestAssured: Pt 3

I can promise you it's nothing to do with your blood pressure! But you might do well to get liver and kidneys checked out. However, sometimes fluid retention is just one of those crosses we ladies of a 'certain age' have to bear!

Sonja,
About 6 mos after my TKR I too had a severe swelling problem, I felt like a whale. GP did every test known to mankind, even sent me to a vascular specialist to double check for DVT's and we could not find any reason for it. He said I had to get the swelling down or it could affect my heart so went on 2 weeks of 40mg of lasiks and that worked, lost 11lbs of water weight in less than 2 weeks, but spent a lot of time in the bathroom, but it worked and we never did define what the cause was. My OS's PA suggested that it might have been angioedema but not sure. Please have it looked into and get the water out asap.

But the blood pressure could be effected by the fluid retention. I think that's the point.

Sonja, you could be retaining fluid but I am overweight. I have plenty to lose. My guess for you is you are close to what your normal weight should be. If you lost weight might be muscle. You know how the say the more you have to lose the easier it comes off. Although I am not saying it was the easy way to lose it. I am just glad I survived.
I am starting to feel better and don't want to gain it back.
Hope you feel better and your yuck guts go away :-)

Oh Vicki bless you!

I wish I didn't have any more weight to lose but I am still aiming for another 140 minus the water weight! So yes, I still have a lot to lose! I was half way to my goal before this weight popped up! :yikes:

I am going to get in touch with my GP in the morning. I talked to the Katie today to see if it was just me, or if she could tell I was holding fluids. She said my face is puffy and she told me she had noticed. When I told her about the weight gain, she asked if I had contacted the doctor yet. I see Katie tomorrow, and if I haven't then she will. We are both hardheaded people! I will though, I promise!

OK folks!!! She promised us! So now, Sonja, you have all of these people to hold you accountable. I do hope that you get this figured out quickly and get it heading in the opposite direction. You must be very frustrated with this. (((((hugs)))))

Yes I am frustrated! I worked out with my personal trainer today, then went to get a massage, and finally Killer Katie put me through the ringer! :yikes: You would think with all I am doing that I should already be at my goal weight! LOL. I asked Tori my personal trainer if she was buying me donuts or scones after the workout! All she would offer was water! :rotfl:

Celebrex and all the NSAIDS can cause swelling in some people. Other drugs an cause swelling. Your GP will look at this idea first.
I had swelling in both my legs so full and so hard that I had to be checked for DVTs (blood clots). Mine came from Alieve. I get edema when I take any NSAIDS, I now have lasix and play the " take 40 of lasix when you think you need to" . I usually will drop 10 lbs when I do and wow the ankles come back. I even think the selling in my knees seems less the day after I diurese.

Sonya, Call your GP they will order bloodwork to check your kidney function and your protein levels. All of your tummy and fluid issues may have come home to rest in the form of swelling if your blood protein levels are low. I would find this possibility to be extremely low because you are able to continue your workouts and PT, but your GP needs to check a few things out. He will want to see you and may also order an ultra sound to rule out blood clots in your legs, again another very low possibility. The good news is you just had labs before your Upper GI so he will have very recent labs to look at for comparison or trends. If everything checks out and the swelling is bad enough he will prescribe a "water pill" that should help you pee it away.

The bummer for me is that once you begin to retain fluids it tends to keep on happening. I've been taking lasix as needed ever since my legs blew up over a year ago. I guess as Josephine said sometimes these things happen to "women" of a certain age...peri menopause and early menopause stinks.

Chris, thanks for the information! I am calling in.the morning and when I get results, I will let everyone know! Thanks to everyone for your responses! I really appreciate it! :friends:

Ok everyone, I have an appointment with my GP on Monday. I have been giving this problem a lot of thought, because today, even though I was wearing my ice vest and had a wet towel and two fans blowing on me while I was in the treadmill, I still overheated! That hasn't happened to me since I ordered the ice vest! I felt light headed and sluggish throughout the rest of my PT session. I was thinking about the only medication I had changed recently and that was Zofran. Then I remembered that I had a new mirena iud implanted about a month ago. I haven't felt good since then, and I found a website that was discussing a lot of the same things I am going through. On Monday, I will talk to GP and Ask him. I will then contact my GYN if we both think that is the problem. :gaah:

Wow Sonja, I hope you get answers soon. And I really hope this has nothing to do with the Mirena. I don't know about you, but the Mirena has been a godsend for me in every way.

Keep us posted and praying for answers for you soon.

Be well,

Dawn

Thanks Dawn!

I hope it isn't the Mirena either, because it has helped me battle the side effects of my PCOS. I had the first one for five years and my GYN said that at the age of 50 the FDA is mandating that the doctors take them out. I found that very interesting.

I am 49 and my OBGYN just replaced mine a year ago just before my TKR. She said that would probably be the last one, but didn't mention any age issue at all.

Hopes and prayers your way!

Dawn

He just said he was required to tell me, and recommend that it be removed because of higher incidences of cancer.

OK, it is time for me to share some great news! I have been cautiously optimistic this week about my knee and how well it has been doing! I decided I would wait until the last day of the week of rehab before I got too excited.

Well it is time to brag on my knee! "Capsie" has been acting very well behaved in rehab, and out! I am wearing a brace, but before,"Capsie" would shift out anyway! I am so excited! The inside muscle is responding, and starting to help! :happydance:

Thank you Lord, for putting up with my hardheadness, and loving me anyway! :happydance:

Bone Smarties, I know this isn't the end of the road, but my future is looking so much brighter!

Monday I will know why I am retaining so much fluid hopefully, so I can get back on my weight loss track! :)

Now that you've been a good girl and done what is necessary to get that knee cap to behave----don't celebrate too much----you know what happens when you get carried away!!!!!!! Seriously, Sonja, I'm mighty happy for you that things are looking so good and that you're feeling good yourself.
