@shrinkette I hope you are all done and snoozing now. I didn't have much of that hurry up and wait with my first surgery, but had WAY more than my share with the second one.

Just wanted to pop in and say good night and let you know I'm thinking of you. Please write when you feel like it.

PS: My sister just found out today she needs a new hip. I recruited her to join the forum. She is signed on in the pre-op thread. I'll get her username and send it to you. Would you be so kind as to befriend her as you have befriended me?
 
I made it. OS reported to fam that all was well, went better than he thought. Had huge problem with pain because of need to find new IV site. I asked for Meds while pain still low, but it increased MAJORLY while they spent time looking for site. Agonizing, sorry to say. Was Starting to panic. finally able to do I'VE, gave me double dose of Dilaudid + pain pump with same. Pain eventuAlly abated.

Started op aRound noon maybe. Had to wait until evening for room. All was well, pain controlled but terrible on movement. Drowsed intermittently New thing now: op leg still numb in foot excep for a few areas. Can't feel sole, instep, parts of lower leg. Plus in some places on outside of lower leg & too of foot, feels like pins/needles or maybe burning. Can't move leg WO awful pain. Doc will c me in am. Being iced continually @ incision by ice machine. Had to get off my chest. Scared -- nerve damage? Normal night of surgery? @Josephine? Help.
 
@shrinkette congratulations, you made it! You're truly beautiful - so honest and heartwarming in all you sare. I'm sorry it's been so frustrating and the various pains, frightening. May it sort itself all out & you sleep and rest well. Hope you don't ave leg wraps with faulty alarms :(. Biggest hugs of encouragement! God bless you!
 
@shrinkette I'm sorry you had that pain. I had really no significant pain in the hospital -- but then they didn't have to search for a new IV site, either. I'm sure that delayed the pain meds being able to grab for you.

Don't worry now about those weird feelings in the op leg -- maybe just the anesthesia wearing off?? But do pin that doc down about in in the morning. In the hospital I was in they came around very early. I really don't remember much about that very first night -- I was pretty drugged up, and that was just fine with me!

Hey @shrinkette ! Welcome to the other side! Please don't worry about the numbness and pins and needles. They grab your op leg and move it around quite a bit during the procedure. It takes awhile for things to settle. Rest and keep that ice going. You'll be fine!
 
@ shrinkette. I'm sure that is just from the spinal and/or surgery trauma....give it time .....try and stay calm. There's lots of strange feelings, numbness, pain that goes on in the next few days / weeks and they all usually disappear ...just after you've got frantic about them....glad op over and done.....love Chrissie x

It's not unusual that the entire limb feels dead. Lots of hippies have a major issue lifting their op leg just post surgery. I don't know if you remember reading post op threads where hippies are asking how to get their op leg up on the bed (use a belt from a night gown or a dog leash). The feeling will fade. When physio comes tomorrow talk to them about it. They will help you learn to move around.
 
I had the same numbness and lack of movement in my foot and leg. It was caused by a local anesthesia which was used in addition to general anesthesia. Numbness wore off suddenly at about 18 hours post op and I regained movement in my foot.

Can't wiggle my toes, even! I'm trying to stay calm. This was not the way I wanted to write about op. appreciate all comments.

I write you from an oxycodone-trimmed fog so forgive any ridiculous typos.
I too awoke with much numbness. At first everything was numb. Shortly everything became VERY painful. I refer only time that I was laying down the pain was very bad all the time and without any movement at all. Movement was nearly impossible attempting it was very very painful.
I'm just talking about moving my foot/leg a few inches direction.
Seems to be wearing off at this point but more gradually and before. The first feeling returning was very sudden (over the course of 30 minutes or an hour) where I was able to again feel my feet.
Its 1am here. I went in at 920am so it's been about 15.5 hours.
ICE had proven awesome for helping with pain but the Oxycodone is my very good friend.
I'm going back to sleep now (was up for vitals) if I can.
Don't worry. Be happy.
After all we can't "take it back" now! :)
Remember all the times you read about this being an arduous journey with a valuable and rewarding ending. That's what I'm doing.

Hi @shrinkette I'm so glad it's over for you but so so sorry that you were in pain. That is awful....I had twinges in hospital more achy than pain so I feel bad for you.

I wouldn't panic about the lack of movement until the morning. Can you get one of the nurses to reassure you????? So glad it's over for you now. You too @DrToonz ...on wards and upwards for you both now!!!!

@Butterfly I'll watch out for your sister too.....isn't she lucky to have you!!!!
 
aww ellen. so sorry about the pain.sounds terrible. but as far as the numbness I agree with everyone. probably don't worry (ha!). I remember the PT said to just try to move it. that just the effort affects the muscles somehow and eventually it will move. it feels odd when the message doesn't get from your brain to the limb. but it will. hope you got some rest and that today is better. glad the doc said it went well. so now you're not just in a holding pattern, you're healing. :dancy:wouldn't it be amazing to be able to do that!
 
@shrinkette - happy to see that your surgery went well and that you are on the road to recovery. Praying that the pain and nerves you are having will subside with the new day☺️

I just saw your postings... was glad to hear from you as I checked all night last night and was worried when I saw no post. I am so sorry you seem to be having some difficulty... I am glad your pain is now under control... Didn't you have an IV already in? confused by that... I would not worry too much about lack of sensations. I have read that from a lot of others on here in the first few days... I am sure it will get better... hope you are resting and recovering.. keep us updated... I am thinking about you:))))

@shrinkette, you have arrived! So happy to see you on this side. So sorry about that horrible pain. When they kept asking me to put a number 1-10 about how I felt, when I was lying in bed motionless, I kept keeping it real with my answers: "Well of course it's 0 or low WHEN I'M NOT MOVING ..." Make sure they know exactly how it is and stay on top of the meds. Very sorry about the numbness, etc., but try hard to be calm and remember what others here have told you who experienced that too. The leg did feel very hard to move in and out of bed. I will be sending good vibrations your way today and hoping it's a better day. Thank you for updating us as often as you've been. Take care.
