@shrinkette so sorry to hear you're having such a rough time so far. I can imagine it's pretty discouraging as we always want instant relief. Don't give up and keep fighting through this, knowing it will eventually get better. We never understand why we go through these struggles. Maybe it's so one day your story will help someone else as they go through a similar situation. I know even before your surgery you're an inspiration to me and so many others. Hoping the dis, nurses, and hospital staff keep working to help you and get the pain under control. Will be continuing to remember you in my prayers Ellen. Hugs and blessings to you!!
 
Either I'm a chicken or a wimp, but all I know is I can't feel my toes, sole, or instep area. I had hoped this would dissipate, but apparently not. Just hope it's not some kind of permanent neuropathy. I may be able to get into this hospital's rehab. I just feel so dependent. Will have to use a bedpan when catheter is removed! I am feeling somewhat discouraged even though its very early days. Sorry I haven't sent good wishes to others.
Still time, though, to say break a leg, @jebrig!!

No its not your fault...really..This time next week you will be a whole lot better...you'll see. Don't let this get you down...Pain is Pain and it's awful....scream.:gaah:..groan....:groan:...cry:boohoo:...do what you have to do to get through this. Your miracle is coming...:SUNsmile:
 
Just remember Its been one day since your surgery......One day.....Whats that saying....Miracles don't happen over night.....maybe it take two or three.....chin up...YOU DID IT.....:thumb:
 
@shrinkette Ellen, I am sure this numbness issue will dissipate.
From my readings, people do get numbness (especially in the thigh for anteriors) and it persists a bit. Have you
spoken to your OS or nurses? I feel for you, and wish you the best!
 
Hey, @shrinkette :when I read you last part your sense of humor is right there. I think we all need that.
Regarding Dependence: I used this phrase today with a nurse (Seriously. This is a quote. )
"I'm sorry to ask you for help with this, but in my quest for the most humiliating thing I could think of to do today, I..."
You can try to use your imagination for what i had done.

There is no modesty in hospitals.

Thanks to all of you for the support & encouragement. I am obviously expecting too much too soon, & appreciate your pointing out some realities. I'm a side sleeper & have been told here that its better to sleep on incision side. Of course they'll have to roll me over for me to get there. I thought that was interesting.

Time for a sleeping pill.

Ellen, are they seriously expecting you to sleep on either side right after surgery????? Sounds pretty impossible to me. Most of us were side sleepers and it seems impossible to suddenly be stuck on your back for weeks to months. But we all get past it. Proper meds help a lot.

And don't panic about the numbness. You aren't a chicken or a wimp...you're just a normal human being trapped in a new situation you don't understand yet. By the time you do understand it, you probably will be past it. One day at a time right now. And keep that sense of humor. :)

@sharonslp No, no they're not "expecting" me to sleep on my side ... I asked about it.

And you've got a great sense of humor, yourself!! Nice clever wit. Love it.

@shrinkette - Ellen, you know we are all thinking about you and hoping to hear good news. This will get better - so sorry it didn't go easier for you. Doesn't it always seem like there has to be something? You're going to get through this too and be better for it.
 
If its any comfort, I barely remember that first day or so in the hospital now.... I remember my toes moving when they told me to move them but that I couldn't feel them move. I remember it was SO hard to move my leg out in front of me before sitting. I remember one night I had a lot of pain and it took an hour to get it under control. But I don't remember much more... it will pass, you will feel better.

No way to change our minds.
I'm just clinging to the long-term successes of others to get through the day.

Feel better Ellen! We're on the long recoup side now. My surgery and first few hours have been great but who knows what the night will bring?!? they brought me a commode and I was able to stand up. It was not like my dream - haha! But it was pretty good and felt great to actually stand. I hope we both have a great night and that the worse is behind us. Nite nite night

I have now participated in my own scientific study and verified a long-held theory.
I tested the bonesmart assertion that everyone should take thier pain-killers by the clock.
It is true.
I tried NOT doing it and was quite unhappy.
You dont have to test this. I've done it for you.
