If you have osteoarthritis of the kneecap and the cartilage at the back of it has deteriorated, then of course it's beneficial to have it replaced with a patellar button.

Some surgeons (like mine) insert a patellar button routinely when they do a TKR, so they don't have to go back later and do it. Others say that it's unnecessary in most cases, so they don't do it. I don't think there's any right or wrong approach.

Having a patellar button inserted is a much less serious operation than having the original TKR.

I don't have osteoarthritis...
I really don't know what has happened to my knee/patella just that it is very painful at times.

A little update... I saw the OS today (actually 3 of them), anyhow, I do need to have the patellar femoral resurfacing! It won't be done until my children are out of school during their summer holidays. This is at my request, I just need it done when it will be the easiest for us all!

I'm glad you got an answer that shows there is something that can be done to make your knee feel better, Tessa, @JustmeT .
Compared to the revision surgery, having the patella button is much less drastic. You'll still need to rest, ice, elevate and medicate of course, but should recover faster.

It's a good idea to wait until the children are on holiday. If you can cook and freeze some meals ahead of your surgery, I'm sure you'll manage fine.

Hugs! :friends:

Glad you have an answer. Patella resurfacing should be easier than your revision.
I agree with waiting until the kids are out of school. Celle has some good suggestions about freezing some meals ahead of time.

OK, I finally got the wedge for my shoe and have been walking with it in, now my quads and hips are in agony...wondering if this normal after walking for a few months with the lld?

When I began using an orthodic shoe everything hurt. They suggested wearing them for short periods of time until my body became used to them.

I agree with Karri. When I got orthotics, i was told to start wearing them for only a short while and to increase the length of time gradually.

A little update about the knee...
I will be having another knee surgery on August 3rd, its a patellar resurfacing or a full replacement because I am having other issues with the knee. He will make the call when he gets in there...hoping just the former not the latter.

I am also having many issues with my hips and a little with my back because of the LLD (leg length discrepancy), I have a proper orthotics in my shoe but its been very hard to adjust to.

The partial in my right knee has been having issues too that are very reminiscent of what happened when the partial in my left knee loosened, hoping its just that its been working overtime compensating for the left knee. Time will tell I guess...

I hope you don't need a revision. But if you do I just wanted to say it was far easier to recover from that then the original surgery. The first week or so was painful but after that I've been getting better very quickly.

Hi Tessa,
It's good to hear from you again.

I'm sorry your right knee is hurting as well. I hope that settles down after your left knee is able to take its share of the load again.

We'll be here for you again, cheering you on and wishing you a problem-free recovery.

Best wishes,
Caryl

I am sorry your recoveries have been so problematic! We'll cross our fingers for the resurfacing and that it does the trick and helps solve myriad problems! Perhaps he could just fix the LLD while in there ... would that it were that simple.

I hope you don't need a revision.
Thank you, I hope so too! I had a revision done last October so this may be a revision of the revision! :P

Thank you so much, appreciate it!

Thank you, I sure hope so....!

I will be having another knee surgery on August 3rd

Sorry you are having such a time of it. We had our TKRs within a few weeks of each other back in 2012 if I remember accurately. Hope it all goes fine for you this time!

2012 is correct...I had two partials that year, left and right, one in May and one in October. Its the one I had in May 2012 that loosened, that was revised to a total October of last year only to be having another revision or patellar resurfacing in August.
Thank you, I am to the point where I say it HAS to go right because its gone wrong so often.

My anxiety level was through the roof thinking that I could be worse off after the revision but it has turned out to have made my life much better. Hang in there. Keep positive thoughts. It will go well for you too.
