@Slainte I am not good with having so many emotions so near the surface all the time ready to erupt without warning.

And just having this surgery does that to us! I teared up talking to my physical therapist about nothing much. I cannot believe how emotional I am! And I've got nothing going on like you do. So it's part of the course. Will be glad when I can control my emotions better.

I know no one is good at "grieving", what I meant is that I am not good with having so many emotions so near the surface all the time ready to erupt without warning.
This surgery is making your emotions unstable. I'm pretty sure that not many of us have avoided a melt down at some time during recovery. You have grief to cope with as well, so it's doubly hard.

Time is going to heal your knee, soften your grief and make your emotions more stable.

I don't take anything during the day.
Yes, I know. That's exactly what I was addressing. Because earlier you said this
My leg is hurting, the muscle that runs along the shin bone to tendon, not sure what, and the quad is in protest. Almost every step I take today is painful....I had to give in a little while ago and take some pain medication, I hate having to take any this early in the day.
You're only 5 weeks out and you need your pain meds on time ! Not taking anything during the day and having this pain is a hazard you will do well to prevent because it can easily settle into chronic pain.

You last comment there "I hate having to take any this early in the day" intrigues me. Do you see it as a failure or weakness on your part to have to 'give in' and take pain meds?

I absolutely do not see it as a failure or a weakness on my part to not take pain meds...I won't be permitted to drive if I take any narcotics during the day so its essential that I don't! I am the only driver in my household and I need to be able to be able to for the sake of my two children. (My sister is staying with us until the end of November but she doesn't drive), she does most that needs to be done so that I don't have to. Still my leg/knee gets angry and swollen if I have a day where I have to go do things.

I honestly did not think of this!

Grieving is difficult no matter the circumstance.
I know it is and its hard on those who are left behind...we have to find our way and to navigate a new path. I think once we have all the "firsts" over it should get better...???

My husband is from Chicago, great place to visit, I will be looking forward to seeing your itinerary, so many great places to visit.

My husband was from just outside Chicago; he loved to tell us of his favourite places to eat there, a chocolate store he would go once a year to indulge himself, the best pizza and lets not forget the Cubs! This is a trip we were planning on taking as a family in the fall next year, maybe I still will take the kids on my own at that time! We were going to drive, I think I would rather fly without him!

Glad you are going to give yourself a little more time to heal before tackling another closet.

I am going to try...I did the bare minimum that was required of me today yet each time I get up to even go to the bathroom my legs swells from ankle to the top of my thigh...I haven't had this happen before!!

Sounds like you need some extreme elevation for an hour or two. Get those toe's above the nose. :snork:

Since you have kids to take care of and other things to deal with you will probably swell up a bit more than others. Don't let it discourage you.

How is your blood pressure?

@Bikesouth My BP is great, it's right where it should be, 120/80...

I will try to not let these set backs discourage me, depends on how long these set backs last!

@Bikesouth I elevated the knee for about 90% of the day yesterday...it's still a little swollen today hut much better than it was. Funny thing is, the more stress I am under the better the BP....lol!

I was reading on here about people's experiences with drains. I had a drain too but it was a vacuum, it wasn't inserted into the cut rather it was hooked up to a vacuum pump that sucked the dressing tight every few minutes. Not painful at all and the dressing itself was very easy to remove.

@Josephine I slipped today and felt/heard something pop in the anterior side of my knee, now I cannot put full weight bearing on my knee, it's swollen some and very painful when I bend it. Do you think it's possible I could have done something with the ligament? It doesn't feel like I hurt the knee itself...

It would be a good idea to let your surgeon know about your slip (how did that happen?), and see what he says. Meanwhile, rest, elevate and ice that leg.

@Celle I was in the shower, my "surgery" knee went behind my other leg kind like a stretch, then before I caught myself something popped.

I have physio Monday morning, if it's no better by then I will get it seen too. In the meantime, I am elevating it and icing. I am very disappointed in myself to have let this happen!

Don't blame yourself. These things happen!

Do you have a shower stool, or a grab bar to hold onto? If not, try putting something like a small towel on the shower floor, so it's not slippery.

@Celle I do have grab bars but I only use them getting out of the shower though. Until today I really didn't feel the need to do so.
I am disappointed in myself because I expect more of myself than to let something like this happen.

Don't be hard on yourself. Last week I almost went down in a slick, rainy parking lot, but the cane saved me. Seriously. Now I am wary of all parking lots. Hopefully your knee will be no worse for wear.

Don't blame yourself. I have read about a lot of people who have slipped on these threads. I hope that you heal rapidly, and they find out that there is nothing wrong.
