Butterfly Vetgirl Elosarabrab stronggal Poppet zauberflöte LeeApril26 Songlady Michelle1976 Josephine sqwerlie wigmar and every other lovely person who has supported and asked how I am. Forgive me not tagging you all as I know I've missed some names out but my head has been on another planet.

I came home yesterday afternoon after being admitted on the Monday. It's been a up and down week and now I'm not on morphine I can explain a bit more about my op. I had a general anaesthetic and a nerve block injection which went in through my right buttock. After chatting to the anaesthetist before going into theatre, it seemed the spinal block was not for me.

I went into the pre-op room calm and all I remember the anaesthetist saying was " Here's a gin and tonic in your hand " :) I woke up in the recovery room with two lovely nurses monitoring me and checking my stats. By lunchtime I was back on the ward and I was put on oxygen, this was the first time I was aware that my blood pressure was low. I was also put on a morphine pump with a button. The next day was a bit of a blur to be honest. The morphine completely wiped me out and I didn't like the sensation at all. I asked to be taken off it and would use codeine and paracetamol as my pain control.

My surgical pain was not half as bad as I thought it would be however my swelling was worse. I developed a red rash around the dressing and it started to spread down my leg. I felt as if my whole leg was on fire and I became really distressed about it. I kept asking the doctor on duty and nurses if they thought it was an infection but they reassured me that it was far to soon to develop an infection and it was no doubt a reaction to the surgery.

I was also xrayed on day three and my surgeon came to see me and said the new hip was in excellent place. I showed him the rash and he said he would organise blood tests but felt it was down to the surgery and nothing else. Then a light bulb went off in my head and I thought " stupid me, it's the dressing that I'm allergic too) so I asked them to change it. Within hours the redness calmed down and the burning started to ease.

Other things that happened are a bit of a blur as I slept quite a bit. I was finally discharged on Friday and I have a community team of nurses that will come out every day for the next few days. My blood test results have showed that I'm anaemic and my haemoglobin count is 10, if it goes down to 8 then I will need a transfusion. I'm starting my iron supplements today so fingers crossed I should improve.

My walking is coming on a treat and the swelling is going down, thanks to a very large ice pack that I use every hour. I'm not eating very well at the moment but they said that was due to the anaemia as well as the low blood pressure. I'm so happy I'm home and I have dissolvable stitches because of my metal allergy.

I will keep you all posted and dear Butterfly, I've been thinking of you and can promise you the operation is no where near as bad as we imagined. That feeling of relief when it's over is just wonderful. Love and peace to you all and have a fab weekend. I'm having my hair washed today by my sister and can't wait ! :kittykiss:
Redshoe, so glad you are home and in recovery! Mone is tomorrow am so you know Im nervous....keep us posted! :)

Red Shoe -- Hope you are feeling better each day now. I'm glad to see you are walking around some. DO be careful, dear chum. I'm about 3 weeks away now and am very nervous. I do not do well with fear and anxiety. It would be so much easier if we could just go see the OS and he would say "Well, pop on down tomorrow and we'll take care of it." instead of havaing the long wait for th anxiety to build. I am such a coward.

I'm sending you thoughts and prayers for healing and peace, and love, of course.

Milli

Thanks to you all for your kind posts. I will reply to you all over the next few day and Butterfly fab news that your chest X-ray was clear :) I'm doing really well and my appetite has come back. The nurse has been out today and taken some more blood to test and changed my dressing. Apparently my scar is so neat, it's just like a pencil line. The op pain only happened at night so I can cope with that and my walking is coming along a treat. No bone pain anymore so to all of my September hip buddies "Hurry up and join me " :dancy:

Way to go Red Shoe. I hope I look as good as you in a week!!!!

Funny, my anaesthetist gave me scotch & coke but I'd much prefer a gin and tonic!!!!!!

Hipsy glad pain not too bad and it's still early days for both of us. I'm having a problem moving the leg sideways when I'm lying down, feels like a dead piece of meat. Has your knee been affected ? Mine is so swollen from where they use it to dislocate the leg, it hurts more than the hip
Vetgirl you will soon be joining us along with dear Butterfly The days go so quick once the op is over with and each day you can do more and more. I was expecting to be in dreadful pain after the op but I'm not. Yes it hurts at night and makes you wince a bit but nothing like bone on bone pain :kittykiss:
inthebeginning a lot of healing can happen over 11 days and the time soon goes. It only seems minutes away since I was worrying myself sick about the op. I promise you all, it's really not that bad

Red Shoe You look WONDERFUL! I'm so glad you are doing so well. What are they saying now about your anemia problem? Will you need a transfusion? You do look great! A lot better than I do. Is your sister still with you to cheer you on? And I hope your hubby is taking good care of you, too. Can you get comfortable in bed? That's one of my big issues and I've been sleeping in the recliner. But I wake up every couple hours. I just can't seem to get comfortable anywhere. I woke up in a serious panic an hour or so ago. I don't know what in particular triggered it, but I woke up just scared to death and all kinds of awful thoughts started running through my mind, like what if I die in surgery and I need to do a transfer on death deed to my son for the house, and all kinds of grim stuff. God, how I wish I could quit thinking thoughts like that! My PC doc told me I had a "minor" abnormality on my EKG; he cleared me for surgery and said it was no big deal, but I've been obsessing over it and worrying about my heartbeat and all kinds of crazy things. I do so wish I could get up and get around and clean out my spare room or something to get my head off this stuff before I have a heart attack from the anxiety. I think one of my biggest problems is I can't DO anything, and DOING stuff is my best stress reliever.

Anyway, I will get through it, one way or another, and get to where you are, hopefully. You just look so good, happy and healthy. I can't wait to be there, too (though I don't think I'll look as good as you)!

Love,

Milli

Butterfly oh dear hippy friend, all the fears that you have are completely normal and you must remember that you've had years of pain and your body is telling you that enough is enough. As for your EKG, the surgeon would no way do the operation if he felt it unsafe. I bet nearly all of us have some sort of other health issue that flags up when they do the pre op. my epilepsy and low blood pressure never stopped them doing it and my blood pressure went crazily low. The operation itself is not what you expect . When you wake up the pain you get is purely op pain and not bone on bone pain. You have to remember that they do have to shove your body about in theatre and of course you will be a bit sore. This is short lived and you need to keep telling yourself that a few weeks of swelling and discomfort is worth it. Sleeping on your back is something you just get used to and in the first few days you will feel tired and just doze of. Ice is mega important so if you can get a surgical ice pack that bends then I would suggest you get one. I'm amazed how quickly you are able to get up and take your first steps. After two weeks you will learn how to bend and you will be feeding those pooches of yours and making yourself drinks etc. ask me anything that's bothering you, it's early days for me and the anaemia has been the worst to deal with. I haven't needed a transfusion so far but it was touch and go. My sister comes and gives me my injections and my husband has been fantastic. I've tried not to fret about the house getting messy or things that need doing. It's only a short time that we are off our feet so a few things lying around wont kill us. Try and stock up with some food treats that you like as well as your appetite may go for a few days. Much love from across the pond and hang on in their lass :kittykiss:

Great advice....glad you are doing so well!!!!

Red Shoe -- Glad to hear you doing so well. You sound quite chipper, too.

I am going to ask them to take it easy on my knee, because it hurts already and I don't want to be looking at knee surgery. The OS said earlier that it would probably improve a lot after the hip was fixed.

Are you eating all right? I haven't had much appetite the last few days, but I think that's mostly nerves.

My DIL couldn't come today because she has caught a cold or something, and I sure can't be catching that so near to the surgery. I'd really freak if it got postponed after all this buildup. She is the one taking me to the pre-op appointment on Tuesday, so I sure hope she is better by then. The surgeon's office is very clear that they do not want sick people coming to their office! I don't know if I could manage by myself to get up to the surgeon's office from the lobby of the hospital. They have valet parking, so I'd just do that, but it is a way long ways to the OS office, and I'm in the walker. Oh well, it will work out someway or another. When she takes me, we get a wheelchair in the lobby. The wheelchairs the hospital has there are not the kind with the big wheels that you can push yourself with your hands, and they aren't motorized. You have to have a human being pushing you.

So glad to see you are feeling better!

Love,

Milli

I'm better today than I was yesterday with the fear issues.

Red Shoe You're in my thoughts and I wonder how you are doing? I hope your are continuing along in that good road you've been on. Not much new here, except my DIL, whiik is my main helper, has been ill with flu and has been unable to come and help me. My grandson came and took me to my final pre-op at the hospital yesterday. I'm having some blood pressure issues (up because I am so anxious) and my PC is helping me deall with those so I can go on and havethe surgery. Just feel really stressed.
