You ought to tie bandanas/scarves around those sticks like Steven Tyler does his mic stand! ;-)

Vetgirl Roofmaster Butterfly PDH63 inthebeginning Poppet zauberflöte and all my other hippy chums, sorry its been awhile since I've posted. I've been working like crazy writing and sorting gigs for next year. I hope your all doing well :) I'm into my eighth week and still feel frustrated that I'm not walking great. My physio seems happy with me but I do struggle without a cane/stick. I'm also getting groin pain and have that feeling of sitting on a golf ball again. I'm wondering if I'm just over doing things and just getting impatient. I so want to be able to walk without a limp. Much love to you all and chat soon :kittykiss:

Red Shoe, I'm wondering why you're not still using your cane or stick if it's such a struggle for you still? If you still have pain, which tends to cause a limp, then you still need the walking aid. Are you still taking any pain meds? The groin pain and tennis ball lump feeling may mean that you are indeed overdoing it. At 8 weeks, many of us are feeling just well enough to return to our normal lives, and that often results in too much, too soon. Then it becomes easy for some tendinitis to appear.

You mentioned very tight thigh muscles earlier on....you got a deep tissue massage for that. Those tight muscles might be your IT bands causing some friction over your bursa....poof! Trochanteric bursitis starts to act up.

Here's a couple articles to help shed some light:
Trochanteric bursitis with THR
ITB (ilio-tibial band) issues and treatments
Iliopsoas impingement after THR
Iliopsoas syndrome

I am too intimately acquainted with the tight IT band/bursitis issue, but I have had enormously good success with frequent massage of the IT bands to break up the tight fibers. I started with every week for a month, then biweekly for a month. Now I'm ready to try just a monthly maintenance massage. If you had good results with your massage, I'd encourage you to continue if at all possible.

Do recognize though that 8 weeks is still very early in the healing process. It will be at least a year, up to two, before all the soft tissue is fully healed up. What you are describing is not at all unusual....but it is telling you to back off a bit and continue the mantra.....rest, ice, manage pain. Use a walking aid if you're still limping.

Sharon

Nice to hear from you Red Shoe, sorry you are struggling.

It sounds as though you are not ready to give up your walking aides (sticks) at this stage and you know what.. That is ok at 8 weeks and quite normal. When you consider that weight bearing stresses on our hips whilst walking can be up to 5 times our body weight. Now a healthy hip is going to be able to support that weight and allow us to move with out pain. But add surgery to this equation it will significantly affect your gait and place abnormal stress on the joints.

I was still using my walker up to 10 weeks until one day I forgot it. I like you didn't want to end up with a 'learned' limp so go with your sticks for a few more weeks and yes, slow down a little maybe honey :)

That sounds like great advice Poppet sharonslp....Red Shoe.....I still have that ache in my groin when I've done a lot and also that tennis ball feeling so it seems we are right on track. :yay: annoying as it is!!!

I walk well without aids but still take an aid to shops or a crowded place for a bit of extra protection

It's great that you are planning such great things next year

Great to hear from you

sharonslp Poppet Vetgirl thank you all for the advice. I am having deep tissue massage once a week but having a new problem that started a couple of days ago. I've developed a sore burning feeling deep in the hip and groin and a constant ache. I'm back using my two sticks which I find much easy. I thought by eight weeks the pain would have eased off? I've tried to be good and rest more, my knee is also killing me with pain. I feel quite miserable with it at the moment and in need of a hug :boohoo:

Aww Red Shoe firstly here is your hug..

Honey, professionally, I would consider "deep tissue massage" at 8 weeks is too soon. Certainly have a massage, but have a effleurage massage (light stroking) which gets the blood and lymph flowing to the area. Your is not ready for the soft tissue to be massaged deeply. I know it is frustrating, but recovering from a joint replacement is a slow process and your body is going to dictate your healing timeframe. Keep with your sticks also, the fact that you are finding it easier to walk with them means that you are not ready to give them up and you need them... Time and patience grasshopper :) try heat packs, even at neatly 2 years I still use a hot water bottle nearly every day when I get home from work... Big, big hugs and love from OZ xx

Red Shoe, a lot of folks assume they should be done with pain meds by 8 weeks. That may be true for some, but not for all. What are you using now for pain? It may well be that you need meds in a higher dosage, and/or more frequently and/or something different. If you post what you are taking, dosage, and how often, we can ask Jo to comment on how to tweak it to be more effective for you.

Red Shoe Hey, there, girl. You are looking great! Sorry you are having problems. I am just 6 days post my SECOND hip replacement now. It was last Monday, the 28th (they moved it up a week). I am doing pretty good, but still pretty slow. I bet you are doing a lot more than you think you are, what with all the demands of making music! If you can, try slacking off for a while and getting more rest.

Peace and love to you.

Hi dear hippy chums, I'm ashamed of myself for not being on here for awhile .im managing to get my life back three months post op :) I can now walk with one stick (cane) and get around the house without any aid. I'm still sore which I'm slightly worried about, I get a deep burning pain in the hip but my family thinks its because I over do things. I can also sleep on my side, omg what a relief that is :happydance: and I can get in and out of the bath, still having problems getting my one sock on though. I have physiotherapy every week due to my rubbish knees not helping my hip recovery. The hospital have been so wonderful and I should be starting in the gym soon. I need surgery on my other hip and knees but couldn't face going under the knife for awhile. Much love to you all and I won't leave it so long to post, I'm back performing and working so hence the delay. Chat soon chums ! :kittykiss:

Nice to hear from you Red Shoe and that you are making good progress. It really is wonderful being able to sleep on your side again and I must say that you are doing great being able to get in and out of the bath at 3 weeks.I just had my first bath on Friday as we were in a hotel celebrating my husbands birthday and there was a bath instead of a shower. It was one of these oldie world free standing ones with a rolled top edge so easier to get out of than the one at home which is against the wall. It was wonderful soaking in the tub I must say.I wouldn't worry about your aches and pains as you are only three months out which is early days and you are still healing.Your family is probably right and you are overdoing the activity so try to ease off and be kind to yourself. One thing I have learnt from this forum is that no recovery is the same as another and we need oodles of patience.
