Many years ago, at the time of propeller aircraft - remember those?- I was on a cross-Channel flight in windy weather. Beside me there sat an elderly, frail lady, also travelling alone. The rain was pelting the window and the runway was barely visible as we waited for takeoff. We began chatting, as you do, and eventually the engines picked up speed and we began to roll. I became conscious of the lady's hand taking hold of my arm. As the plane became airborne a playful breeze gave us a wobble-and-dip and the lady began to pray volubly, invoking many saints by name. Her grip tightened on my arm and I thought "oh dear". So we talked. And talked. About family. Jobs. Her grandchildren. I explained that I wasn't married yet and that gave her a chance to give me lots of advice - very welcome advice - about marriage, children, this-and-that. The Captain came on the loudspeaker to tell us the news that there was some turbulence ahead. Now, I've always enjoyed turbulence so I settled in for a nice roller coaster ride. but my companion wasn't best pleased at all. I knew this because her grip tightened and her other arm joined the first one so that circulation to my fingers became a problem. The turbulence came and went, my new friend and I got to know each other real well, and before we knew it 'twas time to land. There was a bit of a crosswind and a lovely sensation of swooping, my friend started praying again and the wheels hit the tarmac "firmly". The prayers of petition became prayers of devout thanks, and she looked at me and said "Oh it's lovely to be back on Terra Cotta!". We got separated shortly thereafter and never crossed paths again, never even crossed my mind until last week when I found myself in a very bad place, with a misplaced rooftile and a great unsupervised opportunity to fix it before the rains came while SWMBO was away. But my good friends and in-loco SWMBO's

Diesellily made me swear a mighty oath not to go up on the roof, so what could I do? I stood there gazing up at that tile, I could swear it winked at me, and the memory of my friend on the plane popped into my mind, for truly it's lovely to be on terra cotta. And my tin knee didn't get smashed. And the roof's going to leak when the downpours come, and I'm going to get blamed...
