I had groin pain at 8 weeks and still have some at nearly 12. My surgeon said it was due to weak muscles (adductors I think) which had atrophied from arthritis. They are having to deal with my leg getting longer again.
Hope today is a good day @Hattiecat
Any word on date for right hip?
I know that probably seems daunting at this point...but two good hips will need worth all of these struggles!
Keep the faith friend!
Let us know how the visit with your surgeon goes this week, @Hattiecat
I hope you get all your questions answered and are able to schedule your right Hip soon.
A great week to you!
Thanks both, saw my OS yesterday, well not the man himself but one of his team. She said driving was fine now. No date for right hip yet but I'm officially on the list. Slightly disappointed that she said my range of movement was not where they wanted it, I should be able to put a sock on she said ? Referred to PT now, I have been doing my exercises but maybe I have been too cautious? I'm just scared of doing damage. Hope I haven't left it too late to improve.
It’s never too late. How did she want you to put a sock on? By bending down or crossing one leg over the other at the knee. The second requires lots of stretch in the operated area and it is still early on. It does help to have physio input on how to do things and be encouraged to take the next step. @Hattiecat
Things seem to vary so much between hospitals and specialists. I saw my OS at 6 weeks - he said I had excellent range of movement and discharged me, but I could not easily put my socks on at that stage. So conflicting information. I didn't wear socks for the first 6 weeks as I had to wear TEDs. In week 7 I struggled with socks - I changed into sports socks at home when going to the gym and came back sockless. Then suddenly at the start of week 8 I could put socks on.
I had physio under the NHS with the first sessions at 2, 4 and 6 weeks with exercises designed to help muscles strength and RoM - bridges, supine marching, hip abduction etc. At 6 weeks physio told me to get in the pool and gym.
Thanps for all your responses. I have not been offered any PT until now, I have been doing the exercises that the hospital PT gave me but I think now not pushing it enough, really sore today after the manipulation at the hospital. My lower back very weak and this means I do everything really gingerly.
Did you not read the Big Tip at the end of the list of recovery articles? Here it is again for you:
BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.
Happy Two Month Anniversary!
I think it is ridiculous that a member of your surgeons care team is disappointed you can't put on a sock at only two months post op. There is still so much healing to happen. You will continue to see improvement for many months to come. If you're going to Physio to improve your ROM please don't let them push you into doing anything that hurts. If it hurts, I'd STOP. Keep the Big Tip in mind that Jaycey posted above.
Hope you have a great week! @Hattiecat
Hi, I haven't posted for a while as I was doing well and still waiting for my RTHR date. Last couple of days, I have felt uncomfortable on my left hip, it's not painful as such but feels like something is moving slightly, could be muscular but I'm worried. I moved suddenly yesterday to the side and I'm really concerned. Feel silly to ask but does this sound normal? I was gaining in confidence and this feels a step back. Thanks
I'm sorry you're a bit worried and concerned. Possibly you just pulled something when you moved suddenly yesterday, as you mentioned.
What about trying some rest, ice and Extra Strength Tylenol if necessary.
I'd ice for no less than 40-60 minutes, several times today as is normally recommended by the forum Nurse, Josephine. Target 4 x daily.
If you dislocated, it's my understanding, you'd be in excruciating pain. So I wouldn't worry about that. Unless the pain is unrelenting and escalating I'd try to sit it out for a day or two and see if it improves.
If it would make you feel better I'm sure a member of your OS's care team could offer you some reassurance through a few questions if you feel like calling the office.
Wishing you comfort and quick relief. Stay in touch and let us know how you're doing. @Hattiecat
Hi @Hattiecat definitely if you're concerned I'd contact your hospital/ physio/ GP. But I have had movement feelings- more with the first hip than second- but if seemed to sometimes feel like it was when I was or had been doing a bit much- or walking or standing in a new or longer way. And everything is settling and finding new ways of working and recovering. I generally find that most pains go away or move after a few days- and if they go on for longer they often reflect where I am particularly using a muscle.
Hi Hattiecat. It took three months for me to be able to put my sick in and that was by vending forward, pulling up the sock, lifting my leg up towards me and pulling from there.
Only four months out I could gingerly cross my leg over to do it but it stretched muscles and caused me pain so this needs easing into.
