@Readysetgo, just read your account of hospital experience, that is just horrible. Shocked that they sent you home like that. Glad things are looking up now. Take it easy.

Hi @bettifloss - Yes, I'm grateful to be feeling better now and back on track with hip recovery. (I want to do everything I can to prevent that debacle from happening with hip surgery #2!) I walked outside today with crutches for a bit and it was good to breathe some fresh air, even though it was a bit chilly. I like hearing about your outings! Your cinema visit was especially inspiring. I haven't been to a real theater in a long time. I'm putting it on my to do list! Hope you're having a great day, whether out and about or just home relaxing.

Hi @Readysetgo
Happy to hear your nausea has finally simmered down. It amazes me how different surgeons and hospital protocol can be. I spent 3 nights in the hospital, because I was suffering with nausea and low BP and could not be released until both were under control.
It sounds like your recovery is moving right along now, which is great news. You mentioned that you only elevate when you feel the need....I elevated my leg whenever I was resting, whether it be in a chair or in bed...and found that I felt so much better by doing it all the time....as well as icing almost constantly.
Best wishes to you for a smooth recovery.

Hi @Nana757! - Yes I am grateful to be feeling better now at Day 12 Post-Op. Sounds like your hospital took good care of you by making sure your BP and nausea were under control before releasing you. Even the dr. at the hospital told me "sorry" - her "hands were tied" and she couldn't keep me there just for nausea. You'd think they would have at least sent me home with something for the nausea. I will be doing the other hip as soon as possible. I want to make sure the next time doesn't happen like that again.
I do ice almost constantly. About the elevation - I was surprised when OS and PT told me in the hospital NOT to elevate. They'd see my self-made pillow stack and say :no-fin:!! Said you could violate the ninety degree rule that way and not allow the front of thigh to stretch out thoroughly. But as a former dancer, I'd always elevate an injury or inflammation. So it's a bit confusing. Anyway, that's why I am elevating when it feels right to do so (mostly during the day, not at night. I do sometimes sleep on the non-operated side with pillow between knees so I feel the operated side gets some elevation then.)
Many thanks for your well wishes for my smooth recovery. Hope you are having a lovely Saturday @Nana757 !

Oh @Readysetgo! I had to chuckle to myself when I read what the OS and PT told you. I had this mental image of you having such a high stack of pillows under your leg, that it was pointed to the ceiling. Surely, they realize that's almost impossible. Seems to me, a couple of pillows under your leg couldn't possibly break any restrictions. But I do understand about being able to let that thigh muscle stretch out. So, do what you think is best for your situation. It sounds like you've got it all under control. Have a wonderful day!

@TerryCloth - I meant "Be" rather than "Do". Silly error, but you got the gist of it anyway! Not long and you will join us on the other side. Hope pre-op anxiety is not getting to you too badly. Even with the healing and swelling of this newly operated hip, I can feel it is mechanically healthier than the old one. Yes! - Let the healing happen.

@Readysetgo, oh my goodness. I so agree with you and @Nana757 about the pillow stack. Do they really think people are such numbskulls that they'd construct a doggone pillow tower so high that you're practically folded in half? That's ridiculous!
I'm very glad you're doing so well and feeling better. Hang in there and keep up the good work! :)

Recovery Day 18... I got my Aquacel dressing taken off and staples taken out yesterday. Incision area feels much better now. Was starting to feel kind of tight and itchy. No bruising! - I'm surprised because I usually bruise easily. Incision looks very clean, thin and healthy. I made an appointment next week to get things rolling with the other surgeon for my other hip. (Surgeon who just did my left hip recently announced he's resigning. :umm:Oh well.)
It may take awhile because I need to get all the pre-op screening and insurance approval all over again, etc.. The
PA was patient and didn't rush me with all my questions, which I had written down. They'll never know exactly why my body reacted so badly with the nausea, vomiting, headache and dehydration but most likely it was a reaction to the entire cocktail of meds. I asked if I could skip all the opioids next time and just do Tylenol with the 2nd surgery and the PA said that was possible. I know I can take anti-nausea meds, too - but why not just prevent the nausea to begin with if possible? ( I have only been on Tylenol for pain since Day 4 now - or even nothing when I was feeling so sick to stomach - and that's working fine for me.)
My OT gave me some upper body exercises to do with a theraband. I told her I didn't really need that- upper body is pretty strong. But I actually enjoy the exercises! They isolate the muscles and get the circulation going. So I do those and the PT exercises in the morning along with any light housework, laundry or tedious paperwork that needs doing. My energy is best in the morning for that stuff.
I really noticed an improvement in my gait today. I am thrilled that even though I am still healing, the operated hip is mechanically performing so much healthier than the old rickety hip used to! No screechy pain when I lift it to take a step up on the stairs! @DeepBreath - I think you wrote recently about how we know we're doing this to improve our mobility and lessen that pain, but still -when it ACTUALLY HAPPENS!?! - :spin::wowspring:I hope everyone is going onward and upward in their hipster journeys and overcoming any inevitable challenging bumps in the road as smoothly as possible.. :)

Oh, @Readysetgo, your update is wonderful to read. :) I'm sending out good vibes for you as you get ready to get the other hip replaced. I hope you can figure out a good solution to the opioid situation so you don't have to deal with the nausea and such.
It is amazing when you really start seeing the progress post surgery, isn't it? I'm so glad you're feeling good and seeing the results. Keep up the great work! :)

Looking forward to hearing about your second hip line up. I will talk to my surgeon about hip 2 in February

Wow ready for the second one, that's great! After having the one done, I have real admiration for the two at once crowd. I have a pretty sensitive tummy, get nauseous easily & was so pleased to wake up from surgery without any of that. Did you have general or spinal anesthesia? Mine was spinal & it was a piece of cake. Felt the anesthesia doctor's thumb on my back for a sec, then I was out like a light. My pain pills messed up my guts causing constipation, so now I just take the Tylenol. Glad you are feeling so good and that new hip is taking well.

@jomarie58 - Maybe we will go through our #2 hip surgeries at the same time! I'm dreading going through the surgery again, but also eager to get it over and done with! Just hope I am spared the nausea in Round #2. Are you thinking of doing anything differently the next time to make it a better experience? Glad you are feeling a bit better after that rough patch and hope things go up and up from here for you! :)

@gardengal - You are very lucky you didn't have any nausea! I had spinal as well, not general. I didn't feel really bad nausea until Day 3, the day after I was given Tramadol to help me sleep. So maybe the Tramadol set it off. My surgeon's office PA thinks it was the total mix of a "perfect storm" of meds that did me in. Maybe the sedative on top of the spinal had something to do with it, too? Good that you are on just the Tylenol now. Hope it is working just fine for any pain you are having. Cheers to your successful ongoing recovery!

So great to start reading about all the #2 hippies coming up. My OS said he wouldn't do them closer than 6 weeks apart and I'm scheduled for follow-up at 6 weeks so, if they are able to schedule my left hip then it will end up being about 9 - 10 weeks because of wait and m pre-op. I don't really want to do this again but I want to be whole and I need that 2nd hip fixed. --julie

My school won't give me more time off so I am hoping to have my second hip done in June. That is a way off but I don't really have much choice. The one thing I hope to do differently is be thinner! Not really losing weight right now, but I am hoping to get going again once I can move more. I am a size 22 right now, would like to drop two sizes!

RTHR 1/15/2016. Posterior approach. Due to AVN. LTHR in my future.

@Squirrellymom - The surgeon who will be doing my 2nd hip also said he wanted a minimum of 6 weeks in between surgeries. But I feel like I have to really push scheduling those pre-op appointments, etc. or things will get very drawn out in terms of time and the surgery could happen much much later than 6 weeks. After all, I'm the one who wants this to get done soon. Nobody else cares when it happens. The company I have my job with is being good and patient with all this (they sent me a bucket of delicious cookies and a get well note when I came home), but I am not full time status with them (my choice.) So it makes me uneasy to extend my medical leave too long.

I love how you put it - "I want to be whole and I need that 2nd hip fixed." I totally agree! :thumb:

On the other hand, if for some odd reason OS thought I should wait longer for medical reasons or to improve the overall quality of my recovery, I would (reluctantly) go along with postponing things.

Hi @jomarie58 - So you are planning on June for hip #2? Sounds like a good plan! I'm sure once you get more mobile, it will be easier to lose weight before then if that's your goal. Meanwhile, take good care of you and rest a lot to let that operated hip heal well.
