@Readysetgo, well to be honest I made the minestrone while he was at school so he didn't know about the beans. :)
There are plenty of great veggies in it as well as the broth, so I told him to eat around the beans. LOL.

Yaay that your hubs likes to pitch stuff too. Mine's not as keen as me about that, but he never argues when I do a sweep and clearance of the house. :)

@Readysetgo - just checking on you and read that you are already scheduled for #2. I wondered when all the twosies would start. You and I had #1 on same day and I know my OS won't schedule sooner than 6 weeks. I don't get my check up with OS until the 18th of this month and if schedule for surgery is like #1 then I'll be looking at about mid March.

I've been having knee swelling and pain for the past 2-3 days. Elevating and icing now because of the knee. I've never ever had knee problems. The op really bungied that knee. Swelling, bruised, burning. I must have been very uncooperative during the operation or they stretched the muscles all around that knee. I go to PT tomorrow and I'm going to ask therapist about knee problems. I want the operated leg to be strong for next operation. I'm not looking forward to doing this recovery all over again. I keep going against directions. Stopped using walker early, quit the cane within a few days, have ditched the TEDs 2 weeks early and have driven twice and I was supposed to wait til 6 weeks. I know that with #2 and spring weather I will be climbing the walls. Following you so be a great leader. :friends:--julie

@Readysetgo, For some reason I find my dad's comments very comical. He's a funny person, without trying. He just is. He was talking to my nurse in the hospital like she was his new best friend. She was chuckling, like I was. She was really kind and patient with him. Thankfully, she had a good sense of humor.

@Readysetgo
Actually, I'm on permanent vacation (:heehee:), but our trip isn't until the 23rd of this month. But, we are so ready for some Florida weather and good golf courses to play on!

@DeepBreath - So you told him to "eat around the beans?" :snork: And did he do that yet? Actually, I bet that soup would feel good on his sore throat right now. I do hope he feels better very soon!

I bought a loaf of Italian bread today to make garlic bread. Inspired by your garlic ciabatta (and because I couldn't have any of it with that minestrone soup.)

@Squirrellymom - Sorry your knee has been painful lately. Hopefully it is just a matter of your body adjusting after the surgery and it will work out okay, perhaps with some help from PT. It's tricky because I sometimes think our bodies will have to readjust all over again when we fix our hip #2! But I suppose it doesn't hurt to get as strong and flexible as we can before then anyway. I know my knee on hip #1 side had been clicking at times pre-op - (but with no pain or swelling.) And that clicking feeling is more pronounced now post-op. Hopefully it'll improve and so will yours.

Maybe ask the surgeon about that knee when you meet with him? I don't have to do as many of the pre-op appointments because they were already done so recently for hip #2 op. Perhaps it'll be the same for you?

Good luck with that knee and may your recovery continue to progress beautifully! Let me know how your meeting with OS goes on the 18th!

@Hip Hip Hooray! - Your dad does sound like a fun guy! He also seems to be really active which is great. My late grandma was like that - talking with strangers like they were good old friends, always dancing around and making people laugh. I'm sure you do cherish your time with him.

@Nana757 - Off to Florida in February sounds fabulous! And have fun playing golf with your new hips. I don't play golf, but love hearing about it from friends who do. Sounds exciting and peaceful at the same time. And adventurous with trying new courses, too!

@Readysetgo, he actually did eat around the beans. :) Thank you for the kind words. He's still not feeling very well and there's been no word from the doctor on the tests, so I guess we'll just wait and see. Poor kid.

Yay about the garlic bread! I love bread and garlic bread is at the top of the list of my favorites. I hope you enjoy every bite. :)

Hey you were a one month post op hippie yesterday! Congrats!

@Cynthia777- Thanks for thinking of me and giving me a needed nudge to update my recovery thread. You sound like you're continuing to do GREAT! So happy to hear that. I know what you mean by that antsy feeling even if you're kind of tired. Are you getting any PT or OT at home? Don't think you've mentioned it. Keep up the good steady progress!

Recovery Day 40

I had a busy week. My #2 hip sugery is scheduled for Mar. 8th. I had pre-op visit at hospital for that. They have me down as opiate intolerant now in my med records due to my reaction after hip #1. I am doing a lot of research online and talking to people to see what my other options are for pain relief and anti-nausea meds. I am more afraid of nausea, vomiting and dehydration than I am of the pain.

I also had my post-op meeting with OS for Hip #1. He said the x-rays looked perfect. He encouraged me to really insist on help from PT with what I specifically might need. He knows I am not a runner, but cautioned me anyway to really protect the new hip(s). Don't run, unless the house is on fire. Don't force positions like sitting Indian style, let it either come naturally or not at all. Said he has had patients who were addicted to running and continued to do so after THR, then needed revision a few years later.

Also had assessment at outpatient PT place. I wanted to play with all that fun equipment in there but it was just an assessment. When I was leaving I asked her how I was doing and she said my ROM was "fantastic". That was nice to hear. She eliminated some earlier PT exercises I was doing but upped the reps to 2 sets of 10. It sounded like a bit much, but I've given it a try since then. Don't know if it's because I've been very busy this week, walking more, etc., but I got that whollop of energy drain at the end of the day yesterday and had to NAP! My legs are a bit more stiff so I am taking it easy and not doing any PT today.

We had a ton of snow. My avatar is a photo of our backyard after the first storm. There's more snow now after the 2nd storm. Daughter had 2 snow days off from school. Snow is kind of cozy and cuddly when you don't have to scrape it off the car and go to work! :snow plough:Another reason I'm glad I am having a winter recovery! I saw 3 deer in our yard in the storm. They were so beautiful. I felt bad for them, looking for food in a blizzard. For some reason they tend to come near to our house when it's snowing a lot. I wanted to invite them in for coffee. Or carrots.

Our new health insurance covers acupuncture. Acupuncture has always worked really well for me. But I always paid out of pocket. I've seen this new (in network) acupuncturist twice and she's good. She's also an RN. She picked up on my anxiety about upcoming surgery #2 yesterday. As well as regular treatment, she gave me tiny needles in my ear that stay there until they fall out. Forget what they're called. Supposed to help calm me down. Hey - maybe that's why I fell asleep yesterday when I got home!

My brother and his wife and their (former shelter dog) Siberian Huskie are visiting this weekend from NY. She is a chef from Denmark. (Been here many years.) She is bringing us tons of frozen soups and stews she made us to enjoy during recovery time(s)! She works so hard, cooking for private clients and catering companies in New York City - I am so touched that she would also cook up a whole batch of yummy food for us as well. We've been clearing out the freezer in anticipation. They're staying in a dog friendly hotel. We have 3 cats and a small house! The dog tries to play with our cats (she's such a sweetie pie) but they aren't into it, of course. We'll all have Valentine's Day dinner together. Haven't seen them since the summer. Can't wait!

Enough babbling..... I hope everyone pre-op and post-op have a wonderful Valentine's weekend! Stay warm if you're in the Northeast US! We're supposed to get record breaking frigid temps.

Just want to say how much I enjoy reading about everyone's hip journeys, all the different struggles and dilemmas, and mostly about the courage and progress!

I just read your update and must say you have a God given gift with the written word! SO very interesting and fun eloquent!

I envy those of you who are blessed with the four seasons! My husband is from back east and looks at me as though I'm loony when I mention I'd like to live there some day (I was born and raised in SoCal). Today our temp is going to hit the mid 70's (which has made hubby so cheerful). I find our weather so boring! Even if we got more than an inch of rain, I'd be tickled pink! :heehee:

You mentioned your pre-op anxiety that you've been experiencing. I've kind of wondered how I'll feel once I have a date for my second THR. Do you feel the anxiety stems more from the problems you had with the pain medication or do you feel you'd be anxious anyway!

@Readysetgo, what a wonderful update! I agree with Cynthia; you have a gift with words. :)
I'm glad your pre op for hip #2 is done and that they have you clearly identified regarding the opiates. I know that was a very tough thing for you and I am sending out tons of good vibes that this next surgery and recovery will be smooth from start to finish.

Yay on the PT assessment! It sounds like you're going to do beautifully. The energy drain really can sneak up on you after exercising. Good for you for listening to what your body is telling you. That's the best way to go.
How fascinating about your acupuncturist. I have always wanted to try that, but just never have. I love that she gave you the treatment to help calm you.

Your avatar is beautiful. I agree that snow is lovely and cozy if you don't have to shovel it or scrape it off a car. :)
My son had early release today because we're supposed to get a bit of snow. Folks here don't have to deal with it much so they proceed with an abundance of caution. I think that's the smart thing to do. I roped him into doing a grocery store run for 'storm essentials' and then treated him to a Slurpee. We laughed about sipping on frozen drinks when it was below freezing outside. :)

How wonderful that your brother and his wife will be visiting and that she is bringing you yummy noms. What a sweetie! I hope you enjoy your time with them. :) I LOLd about their doggy trying to play with the kitties. In my experience, felines generally have no time for canine shenanigans. :heehee:

Enjoy your weekend, friend, and stay warm and snug.

@Cynthia777 - Very good question about what my pre-op anxiety stems from - fear of the pain med problems or just plain pre-op jitters? I wonder that myself. I told OS (for #1 hip) that the surgery experience was great except for the nausea biz. So honestly I don't know. Maybe without the nausea I'd still be nervous because even though I've done the surgery once, it's still a matter of the unknown because no 2 surgeries are the same. I still don't know at this point what my pain meds, anesthesia and/or anti-nausea med protocol will be for #2 and that in itself makes me nervous.

I was also wondering about your situation. You're having such a fabulous recovery but you did have that scary blip. Are you nervous about surgery #2? Or is it not so much a reality just yet?

Do you REALLY want to try living out east after being a SoCal gal your whole life? That's funny about your husband. Maybe it'd be fun for you both to just visit New England in the fall or New York City at crazy Xmas time for a change of pace....? It does sound like you have a lovely and comfy life in California. I envy YOU!

Thanks for your kind words about my writing. Sweet of you.

I'm looking forward to hearing how your meeting with OS goes on Monday. It's interesting how my OS had me start right away with the PT and OT at home.

I hope you have a fun weekend! And I'll try to send some snow and below 0* temperatures your way just for a little excitement, okay? (Don't tell your hubby it was me. :heehee:) :)

I think I'm very calm because I'm in that "in the future" zone, but I think I will still have some of the pre-op anxiety (maybe just not as bad).

We do happen to own a summer home on the shores of Maine, but only travel there in the summer. Since it isn't winterized, maybe a trip at the end of summer, stretching into at least early Autumn might be in order. My husband says it's really beautiful then, although a little too chilly for him (send the snow and I promise not to tell). :heehee:

Have a great weekend!

Hi @DeepBreath! Thanks for the good vibes towards a smooth recovery for my #2 surgery! My timing is very close to what yours was for the 2 surgeries. Seems like that is a common time frame (8-9 weeks.)

Sounds like you had some good Slurpee time with your son doing that grocery run! I usually have to bribe my daughter to do "boring grocery shopping" with a treat like that. I like it when schools are cautious with the snow biz, too. No reason to risk safety if an early release or snow day is possible. Breaks up the routine, too...

Yes I'm excited to see my brother and his wife and their doggy this weekend. Also looking forward to stocking the freezer with yummy stuff! The cats will have to deal with the dog's visit for awhile. It'll be fun to see them scurry and puff up and hiss around the house. One of them is particularly brave with dogs. He stalks them and chases them. We'll see how it goes.

Thank you for the compliments on my writing. I hope you don't get TOO much snow, but just enough for the right cozy winter ambiance. Have a great weekend! :)

@Readysetgo, I have read on here that some folks have an almost immediate turn around with their surgeries. It was an example given by somebody, so I have no idea why that would occur, but boy does that sound scary to me. I'm quite satisfied with my 8 week turn around. :)

Oh yeah, the Slurpee thing was a total bribe. He wanted to get McDonalds (after I had just bought some yummy things for lunch...come on, kid!) I figured a Slurpee was a good compromise.
As far as the 'storm' went...yeah, I think we got all of 30 flakes on our front steps. Oh well, it was pretty for about 5 minutes and now it's just very cold. I think your area is supposed to get even colder temps, aren't they?
It's a good day for baking cookies. :)

LOL, I hope you have a fabulous weekend with much entertainment from the :meow: and :doggie:.

Enjoy, friend. :)

@Cynthia777- I love Maine in the summer! We've had fun family reunions there a few times. How lovely you have a house there! Do you go every summer? Might be nice to stay there when it starts to be autumn. You could bundle up with lots of sweaters and blankets and eats lots of clam chowdah.

Hope your weekend is going great!
