Recovery Day 27 - I met with surgeon for Hip #2 and set a date - March 8th! I drove there (6 days earlier than I was told to be able to drive, but it was just fine - 30 minutes there and 30 minutes back.) It was odd being in the "real world" again. I hadn't been out since we drove to the hospital for nausea, dehydration, etc. on Day 6. Since then I've just been home or to the bus stop for daughter down the road.

Surgeon for #2 does anterior lateral approach same as hip #1. But he seems to favor a longer hospital stay, which makes me feel safer in terms of actually being ready to be discharged (as opposed to literally vomiting on the way to the car to go home and no nausea prescription with me which is what happened last time. Sorry for TMI.) I squawked a lot about not getting hard core pain meds next time around and OS was with me on that. He said I would need to discuss with anesthesiologist which sedative might work best for me with the spinal in terms of not making me sick again. Fortunately I can skip some of the pre-op appointments because it is so soon after last op.

Very happy with progress of hip! When I got staples out at 2 weeks they said the 90 degree and midline restrictions were over. I am still cautious. I use my trusty grabbers and always have a pillow between knees when on my side. I use my new cane - pale pink floral design - or 1 crutch sometimes, but really am mostly without assistance when walking now. I felt the 1 crutch especially was making me tend to lean on the unoperated side. I try to walk when unassisted with good posture and weight evenly as possible on both sides, keeping pelvis stable (or trying to!) and rolling through the feet heel to toe.

I felt more tired the last 2 days. Maybe because I'd been on my feet doing housework more and reorganizing the home. I bagged up a ton of old books, clothes and toys to donate. I love getting rid of things. Leaves more room for the new.

I let myself nap when I need to. I still don't sleep through the night. I get up, change the ice packs, reorganize the blankets and pillows, check Bonesmart if I'm particularly awake. But I am sleeping for longer amounts at a time so that's good. Still taking tylenol, but don't need it as often it seems.

I had a nice time today taking my daughter to gymnastics and then going to our local coffeshop for lunch. Amost felt normal. I did use my cane at the gymnastics place - tons of kids wee and big rushing around so felt I needed more stability/protection. Looked at the long staircase up to the observation room and opted for handicap seating downstairs to watch. Going upstairs isn't too bad, but going down is a bit trickier still. I was happy I didn't feel tired afterwards, so suggested going to lunch and daughter was thrilled. After lunch we looked in some of the shops nearby. I didn't use the cane and walking was fine. Well, as fine as can be at this point. It still feels like I have a strange blobby thing in my hip. Oh wait! I DO have a strange blobby thing in my hip! Honestly, in spite of that sensation, my movement is so much better in that hip than it was pre-op. I can do straight leg raises with it now with ease and pre-op I couldn't lift it an inch! Going up a step with that leg is pain free and before it was a bit of agony each time.

I do the PT and OT exercises once a day. Home PT will end this coming week and I'll start outpatient PT the week after until Hip #2 Op I guess. PT therapist was a bit miffed when I told her I only did the PT once a day. Said I should be doing them 2 or 3 times a day! Whaaaa???:groan: But she couldn't really complain because my progress has gone well so far.

I hope everyone pre and post op are having a wonderful weekend! I sometimes wonder how anxious I would be going through this surgery without the information, tidbits, support and comfort of reading about others going through this, each in their own way. Thank you Everyone! :loveshwr:

I just caught up on your recovery thread and I see you had a bit of a rough road starting off. The good news is, it seems you've gotten it under control now.

I've read several recovery threads and it seems as though second recoveries go much easier than the first one. Hopefully that's what we will experience. :-)

I'm with you, I want the second hip done lickety split! Hugs!

@Readysetgo, yay on getting the date set for your second surgery :yay: That looks like about 8 weeks out from your first? That's a good spacing between the two. Happy that things are going well for you and that you're sleeping longer. Sleep is so important for healing.

I had to chuckle about your comment about having a strange blobby thing in your hip! It is a weird feeling, isn't it? I remember thinking how odd it felt but give it time and it will eventually it will start feeling more like your own. Hope you are having a good day!

PT therapist was a bit miffed when I told her I only did the PT once a day. Said I should be doing them 2 or 3 times a day!
NOT! Walking is the best PT for a new hip. Too much exercise only leads to chronic problems. Stick to your own plan - it sounds very reasonable.

@Cynthia777 - Yes I'm hoping the second time around is much easier than the first! I'm very pleased with the hip's progress, but don't want to relive that first week of hell ever again.
And I am also hoping that BOTH of your surgeries are SUPER smooth and easy for you! I need to tiptoe over to the other side now and check how you're doing there.

Hey @Hipster Girl - Thanks for your Yay about my 2nd surgery date! Yes, it'll be at about the 9 week mark, so I think the timing is good. Nice to know that blob in my hip will start to feel like my own blob eventually! Hope you are having a good weekend and that your job situation with that PITA smooths out. Sounds like you are also up for a job transition soon. Exciting! Good luck!

@Jaycey- Thanks for reconfirming my "own plan". PT 2 or 3 times a day could not only lead to problems, but would be quite boring as well. :bored:

@Cynthia777 - Yes, the first week is tough, but mine was worse because of the 4 days of nausea, dehydration, stomach pain, etc. and then having to go to the ER. I could only keep down mint tea and ice cubes during that time. Some hippies do have nausea as well but not for 4 days. My case was a bit unusual and I am glad that most have a much better first week. My point is - and so will YOU!! :yes!: I am hoping my 2nd time around will be easier.

@Readysetgo, what a wonderful update! :yay:
Congratulations on your second surgery date. It sounds like you are doing beautifully. I smiled at your comment about loving to get rid of things...me too! I love nothing better than going through stuff and getting rid of items we no longer need and organizing the leftovers. :)
Keep up the great work, hippie friend! You're going to be fully bionic before you know it. :)

Hi @Readysetgo, I just caught up with your thread. That's too bad that you were hit so hard with the nausea. It's odd that it happened after a couple of days. I'm glad that you're feeling better. A friend of mine just took Tylenol for her THR for the same reason. She was fine.

It sounds like the hip itself is healing well. I don't feel my implants anymore. I think it took about three months. At first they felt bulky and heavy. Glad to hear you are doing hip number two. It's such a relief once they are both done.

So excited for you! I won't be able to get my second hip done until school is out for summer but when I see surgeon for 3 week post op check I am hoping to get it set up!

I am still using the walker, partly because my new hip has made the right leg longer making me feel uneven and partly because the left hip hurts with every step. I keep hoping I will get to the point where I am just using a cane soon!

Have a good week!

RTHR 1/15/2016. Posterior approach. Due to AVN. LTHR in my future.

@DeepBreath - Thanks for your congrats on my 2nd surgery date. I'm pretty excited about becoming fully bionic. Sounds like you had a great weekend- with no cane! Wonderful! I hope your progress just keeps going on the up and up!

Glad to know you understand my motto: "When in doubt, throw it out." (Well, actually I do donate a lot...)

I heard you were making minestrone soup.
Can you save me a bowl please? Sounds perfectly yummy...

Hi @Hip Hip Hooray! - So great that you don't feel your implants anymore. I'm looking forward to that!

I bet that pedestal sink looks beautiful. Would love to see a photo, but I know figuring those things out can take forever sometimes. It seems my computer keeps changing how to upload photos from the phone. One of these days I'll figure it out and then change my poor avatar (it's not Xmas anymore...)

They don't know exactly what happened with me, but that the perfect storm of meds affected my (super sensitive :bricks:)
body. The Tramadol on the 2nd night in hospital really kicked everything up a notch. The next day was when I started not being able to keep anything in my stomach. Kept thinking it would get better, but it didn't until I got an IV and anti-nausea meds at the ER days later. Thank you so much for telling me about
your friend who got THR with just Tylenol! Very comforting.

Enjoy your new sink. You must smile every time you use it!

Your posts are so inspiring, thoughtful and informative!:)

@jomarie58- Thanks for your kind message! I hope you get that surgery date set up for the summer. I also hope that left hip hurts less and you can use the cane soon. Are you on your feet a lot at school? When do you return to work? I hope you get enough time off!

You, too - have a wonderful week!

@Readysetgo, I honestly think I have the opposite of hoarding. I get such a rush when I can either donate or pitch stuff. There is a huge bunch of boxes in our garage from our last move that needs to be gone through and dealt with. That will be my spring/summer project and man, am I excited!

Umm..yeah...about the minestrone. I made a double batch with freezing some in mind. My husband is away for a few days on a work trip and my son all of a sudden "...doesn't like beans" so if you could come on over I will feed you minestrone and ciabatta garlic bread and send you home with a container of it to boot. :)

:hi: @Readysetgo!
Your updates on your progress sounds wonderful and you seem to be doing great! I'm so happy to hear you've already got your 2nd surgery date lined up, already. I certainly hope that you do not suffer with that terrible nausea this go-round. You know...I was given Tramadol before my surgery, to ease the pain, but I couldn't take it. It gave me horrendous heartburn and made me sick. It affected me within 15 minutes of taking it. So maybe, it was just the Tramadol that was causing all your nausea issues. Hopefully, they will be able to give you a combination that doesn't make you ill. Keep up the great progress!

Thanks @Readysetgo. It's so interesting to me to hear how people here respond to the meds. I was on Tramadol every four hours, and Percoset every four hours. (I alternated them every two hours.) I didn't feel any change from the Tramadol. The Percoset was like a miracle drug. I figured the Tramadol was probably doing something I couldn't feel, so I still took it.

Our systems really get saturated with medications after this surgery. My friend who got so sick after her THR stayed in the hospital for two nights. (She was ready to go home after the first night, but she didn't want her husband to have to clean up all of the vomit.) They couldn't find the right meds for her, but she had no pain with the Tylenol. (just stiffness.) She said that they kept having to change her bed.

So glad you are healing. Keep up the good work!

@DeepBreath - So your son sees you cooking up a ton of minestrone with BEANS and suddenly decides he doesn't like BEANS!? :loll: Typical. I'll stock up on some food my daughter is liking lately and after I bring it home, she'll declare she doesn't like THAT anymore.... :umm:Well I'd certainly love to make a dent in your minestrone supply! And with ciabatta garlic bread - delish! I haven't made any garlic bread in awhile. You are inspiring me.

Sounds like you'll have a lot of fun going through those boxes in the garage! Excellent for some good spring cleaning! I'm lucky my husband likes to get rid of stuff, too. He's overjoyed if I've sent more bags to the donation bins.

@Nana757 - Yes, I do think the Tramadol really got the nausea going. The vomiting started the morning after I'd been given it for pain and to help me sleep on the 2nd night in hospital. I was a bit nauseous with the Percocet as well but didn't actually get sick. I'm hoping that Tylenol will be enough for the pain next time, but am a bit nervous about it all....

Thanks for cheering me on! I am pleased with my hip's progress. Are you on your vacation yet? Hope you're having fun! :)

@Hip Hip Hooray! - I've been talking to different people about reactions to meds and you're right - it really is interesting. One woman said Tramadol made her hyper and another said it put her to sleep, etc.....

Oh I do empathise with your poor friend who got so sick from the meds! I hope she's happy with her hip's recovery now after all that! You're lucky the meds worked so well for you.

Your dad sounds like he's worried about you. You seem to be taking his comments with a healthy attitude. That's great that your pelvis feels so aligned now! I also feel like my pelvis relaxed into a better place after the op. Plus the lower back pain I had pre-op almost constantly has disappeared. I look forward to seeing what happens when the other hip gets fixed!

I hope your excellent recovery continues to unravel more progress and joy for you!
