Boy zauberflöte!
Thank you for that info. It is indeed expensive and complex!
My beef with our Private Health is that even if there is just a couple you have to pay family cover or of course you could take two single covers. There are waiting periods for certain treatments and the fees go up each year. We have been with Teachers health forever and I left teaching in 1989. Ijoined when I left Uni and we changed to family cover when we married. Our daughter joined in her own right when she married. It pays the best refunds and has"stuck to the knitting"- never offering rebates for gym gear for example . There are many funds choose from and different plans and excesses.
Here in rehab for example my stay seems pretty unlimited if the Dr says I will benefit and I can then do half days as an admitted patient at no cost.
Some people in here have limited days allowed to them.
I think I am getting my money's worth!!
Our Medicare scheme which covers everyone is paid through taxes just like Obama Health no doubt. It covered the majority of the rebatable part of the surgery and implant . So ours is pretty complex too but Private Fund increases are regulated and we don't have the risk pool issue you have.

Each year our private health cover insurance increases... Certainly with it though. I had the opportunity to have a week in rehab, but I had already spent 11 days in hospital 6 in ICU and HDU, I was happy to come home.

Yes@Poppet, home is looking pretty good to me now.
Took it easier today. Lots of walking and stretching and stair climbing and sitting and standing!
Yesterday by the end of the Hydro session I was completely stuffed. Physio put weights on my legs, got me to lean back against the side of the pool and then, standing on one weighted leg, lift the other one out in front to stretch it.
So lifted the leg and the other one shot up too leaving me upside down clinging to the side of the pool...happened twice -needed to be physically turned back up the right way. What a sight it must have been.
I had no petrol left in the tank! The trials and tribulations of rehab.
There's a fine line between maximising the exercise sessions and doing just too much which then leaves the hip tight and spasming (?)
I'll get there eventually. Today the Dr said it would be a long haul and that I was doing extremely well compared to some who can't even lift their leg after the lengthening!
At least when I questioned him further about what he meant by a long time, he said it will be weeks rather than months and the best exercise is walking....and walking...and walking. Preferably in a hydro pool for maximum effect. :sigh:

Hi everyone...its my 5 week hip birthday report

1. Around week 4 the pain in my ITB and knee were all but gone
2. the glute exercises I started last week now mean I can walk in doors unaided with little limp and I can climb stairs fairly comfortably
3. My current exercise regime is largely the same except the additional glute exercises I am trying to walk twice a day for 15 minutes with one stick
4. I have been to the gym twice and can do most machines as before except cycle and adductor machine...all on the minimum weight
5.have not needed pain meds since week 3 nor ice since week 4 but will use if required
6.its off to see my os team next Monday
7. I failed to buy a tin of plums must be out of season?
8. The only remaining problematic issue is poor sleep patterns :(

7. clifford149 TINNED plums out of season???? Come come man, you'll have to do better than that. It's probably a diabolical pplot hatched by all the people reading this thread all over the world. "Buy tinned plums! Clifford wants them and he shall not have them!"
8. I'm really sorry about the sleep thing. Maybe you have spring fever. Maybe Sky is somehow upsetting the sleep vibes in your house. Are you allowed to take a little melatonin yet? One mg half an hour before you plan to retire, same time every night. A liquid kind that you drop under your tongue and hold there for a few seconds is very easy to take and immediately available to your body/brain. Let's ask Poppet !

Hi clifford149 You seem to be doing great - the sleep thing settled down for me about 6 or 7 weeks in, so fingers crossed. Just don't overdo the exercise, more is not necessarily better in this case. Listen to your body! Don't know where in UK you are, here in Rochester we have a hydrotherapy pool at the local sports centre which is open for anyone on 2 mornings a week (and free for us over-60s!). Just walking in the warm water is good exercise and loosens up joints and muscles wonderfully.
zauberflöte I don't think we can buy melatonin over-the-counter here any more which is annoying as it's supposed to be a big help with jet-lag as well as insomnia.
Maeve Sorry, I did laugh at the mental image of you in the pool! I have a problem with balance (measles aged 5 affected ears!) and when I get underwater I can't tell which way is up unless I can tell by the light, big problem when I tried diving lessons (not for long).
Oh well, keep taking the tablets everyone - and icing etc.
Happy healing
Anne

Hi clifford149 an excellent report You are doing very well. What a shame you are still having problems with sleep. I hope someone can find a solution soon.Have you always had sleep problems ?

Dear Nannyannie....yes thanks about the advice concerning over doing the exercise....
And as you experienced the sleeping will come on later. .overall I cannot complain as the 5 weeks have just gone !!!

clifford149. I can really sympathise with the sleep thing . Not my hip but my knee still keeping me awake.... still am not having that replaced anytime soon no way. Lol.

Hi...my knee also but it did go away...just keep icing...I am sorry for your pain....it just takes time.....please use the forum to express your concerns...wiser folks than me will support you... :)

Great report, Clifford. Getting rid of the limp is a huge thing. Sleep will sort itself out eventually....never soon enough for most of us. :)

Sharon

Great report clifford149! Sorry you are still having sleep problems. I thought taking meletonin was a great suggestion by @zauberflote but why is it not available over the counter in the UK? Maybe you should eat a bunch of turkey and dressing. I may have missed it, but what kind of exercises are you doing for your glutes?

Hi sharonslp.....thanks for your support

Hi Teacat....glutes ....the clam for gluteus medius...this exercise requires that you are laying on your non operated side with a pillow to keep the restrictions...a second exercise is

then straighten your legs your operated leg the one on top....then lift...its quite difficult for the first time just a small movement is a start....then lay on your tummy and raise your operated leg.....return to lay on your back and do the bridge.....these are the bed exercises.....then sit on the edge of the bed feet on floor ...stand......then when standing find a step and with support...step up with your op leg....but reading all this is difficult to follow....go onto YouTube....but I guess you should confer with your pt first...:)

Hi hippies...today was my last day of taking blood thinning meds...so another goal completed....had a more restful day today but did a 20 minute walk.......the weather has got a little warmer in the UK which makes going g out more enjoyable :)

Well done clifford149!
Must beva great feeling. Still got the dreaded white stockings? Six weeks to wear them here in Oz?

Hi clifford149 You must be so relieved to be finished the blood thinning injections My last one was on Tuesday and I felt like throwing a party to celebrate. One side of my tummy is a mass of bruises I have stopped the codeine now so I am enjoying a glass of wine for the first time in 5 weeks. Happy days

Hi Kim22. Maeve........I had pills not injections...so I was lucky on two fronts.....no stockings no injections.....what is strange is why did you have to wear stockings or have to have injections ?...... So whose protocols are best for a patient?

Every OS has a different protocol regarding TEDS and blood thinning meds, injection/oral.. I ponder over that  is it caution, or is it habit.... :sigh:

Great update clifford149
