@muckingabout
I can relate to what @beachgal said. Like you, the cane feels a bit more natural to me. I have been using both lately. Walker earlier in the day after getting out of bed, mix the cane in as it feels right. Have a good day and hope your doc agrees with the plan

What about crutches? I only used the walker once in the hospital and then switched to crutches. I'd been on crutches for several months before THR and found them much easier to manoeuver.

Hmm. I don't know. We have crutches in the basement, but no one has mentioned crutches. I'll see what the doc says. I'm thinking I won't hear back till tomorrow since today is a surgery day.

I am fully weight bearing though.

I'm not full weight -bearing yet. I took a few steps between the kitchen sink and the fridge this morning without the cane and it was ok but I'm not ready for no support. At just over two weeks post op, I know my prosthesis is not attached yet and that scares me a bit with the weight-bearing on op leg. I'm probably being more cautious than necessary but I don't want any screw.-ups.

Hi @muckingabout, crutches are the standard here in Ireland on discharge from hospital. I found them to be supportive and easier than a walker which I used briefly in hospital... I think the progression can be walker to crutches to a cane if needed.

Funny how different the protocol for assistive walking devices can be. I had a walker for 6 weeks (partial weight bearing), a cane for 2 weeks (which I used for about a week) and then nothing at all. No one ever mentioned crutches to me, and I would not have used them in any case.

My doc told me full weight-bearing as tolerated from day one. I am both cemented and screwed (heh) and had a posterior approach.

Great input as always. I can associate with what @muckingabout experiences, the walker is tight for space in our bathroom as well. I also was told I was weight bearing as tolerated. I am uncemented and unscrewed (ha ha). At the 1 week exam, my surgeon asked me to stand and walk a few steps without the walker. Felt daunting to even try. He could see I was not ready yet. He told me when I feel like I am 'carrying around' the walker, it is a good time transition to a lighter device like a cane. I consider my surgeon to be fairly conservative with precautions and giving new clearances too. I still use both, but prefer the cane if I can. The walker can be louder to use and barely squeezes through a couple of our door openings. I did attach a little bag and velcro strap for the grabber, so I consider it my nerdy utility transport

My posterior approach and uncemented prosthesis require the bone to adhere to the stem so the caution of not full weight-bearing until
closer to the six week mark. Il almost half way there. I guess that's why I'm scared to do too much unassisted walking. Just being safe. Plus muscles disturbed using posterior method are still being nudged along.

I think the main thing for all of us is to keep moving!!

@grnplatebrd, I was surprised to learn that the walker didn't fit into my downstairs powder room at all. The doorway was too narrow for the wheels to go through.

Gosh it does vary across doctors/regions. I was fully weight baring from day 1 with ceramic on ceramic, uncemented with screws and posterior approach. It will be interesting to see what your doctor recommends. The important thing though is that you feel secure and well supported..

Now that was not allowed for at least eight weeks in the booklet I was given....[emoji4]

But @beachgal we pretty much had the same procedure bar I had a bone graft and the restrictions still vary! I'm sure you are right to take it at a pace that works for you.

That's the one unfortunate thing about this site -- so many people report such positive experiences from the anterior approach that I has some concern about the posterior approach, but as I believe Josephine pointed out, get an OS you trust and let the rest go.

The hip restrictions are annoying but my pre-OP rom was so limited that some of them aren't even a change for me.

@beachgal
I will certainly take that information seriously. I have no intention of pushing myself too far. Before doing any major adjustments I will be checking with my OS. I very much value your input

@muckingabout
I like your take/humor on sexual activity, and the variation of everyone's experience. I too had some concern about whether to go with posterior. I had a couple hippies tell me I should definitely pursue Anterior, but when I found my surgeon with good credentials prefers posterior, I did exactly as you mention. Put my faith in his skill and decision to use Posterior. His confidence is there, so I put mine with it too and let any doubt go the best I could. No complaints yet.

Ditto @muckingabout. .. my range of movement was shocking prior to the op.

My bone graft and protusio meant the OS had to have full access to the hip. I read somewhere that posterior allows for that. And I liked and trusted him....I didn't realise for a bit that it was the type of approach taken that dictated the restrictions. I assumed everyone would have them. I still have to actively avoid crossing my legs but not for much longer! On the grand scheme of things it's a short time.

I knew about the restrictions with the posterior approach vs anterior but the risk of not having full access to the joint scared me more than the restrictions. A friend had TWO anterior approaches on the same hip and had problems with it both times. Third time they used posterior approach with a different surgeon and it worked like a charm. Too many stories of cracked femurs, etc, too for my comfort level with the anterior. Hence my choice.

I'm sure I could be more weight-bearing than I am now but I'm just being cautious. There is no real pressure to increase it at this point although I'm working into more weight each day. Slow process.

As for sex now? Ain't happening. Haha. Honestly, I don't think I could persuade hubby to even try with all he's witnessed. And sexy is hardly an adjective I'd use to describe myself at this point!!

Good points about the posterior/anterior approach. If I had less restrictions, sure it would be nice. I told the OS, just put in a great hip that is going to work well for years and I am happy. As for the sexual observations, funny stuff and nice to see the humor come out
