@cthipster I'm fortunate that the hospital is literally at the end of my road. My poor roommate had a spinal fusion that involved a large abdominal incision, her pain was never under contol and she had a 2 hour car ride home.

I just took a nap in my recliner while wearing my dog as a hat.

Question: if I am icing and elevating to get the swelling down in my whole leg, where other than the incision area and maybe the hipbone/groin area should I ice?

@muckingabout, love Spenser. I'm going to post a pic on my thread of my dog. Why is your whole leg swollen??

@beachgal, I guess it just happens sometimes. That's what led to the DVT scare. When my uh sand had his ruptured patella tendon repaired in March, his ankle was really swollen for a while.

Funny. I haven't had much swelling after the first three or four days. I've been icing and elevating just to be safe. Frankly I hardly have much bruising anymore. Just a little yellowish color as it's fading.

Are you paying attention to your salt intake and drinking a lot of water? I eat zero salt except for just minimal with nothing processed sodium preservatives and I must drink 130 oz of water every day. ??

@beachgal I may have slacked off on the water today. Thanks for the reminder. I drank so much in the hospital that it was almost a joke. I'll start pushing it again

It's a week since my surgery today! Such changes. No complaints about my recovery so far.

I did make a pain management error last night. When it was released, they switched me from lortabs to tramadol at my request, which they said I could take with 3 Tylenol. Well, last night at bedtime, I decided meh, it's just Tylenol how much could it be doing and just took the tramadol. I woke during the night pretty uncomfortable. (Maybe a 2, not that big a deal, but still),

I'm going to set some goals today, around walking (just laps around the house), water consumption ( @beachgal reminded me that I had slacked off), and reading and writing (so that I'm not just getting sucked into the internet all day.

I hope everyone has a great recovery day!

@muckingabout
You sound very tuned in to your recovery. Bummer about the pain spike. I think I will be trying some of your method. I have not read much and have been meaning to. More water consumption again and I have also been drinking a little less the past couple days. Enjoy your walking and healing today

@muckingabout , sounds like you are doing very well with this recovery. About the icing, ice anywhere that feels tight or swollen. Just be sure and wrap the ice in a towel so it's not directly on your skin.

I'm going to call my doc this morning to check, but is there any reason I can't switch over to a cane? I started using it in the bathroom and I've tried it for ten paces or so and it honestly feels more comfortable and like I move more smoothly.

I would hope they will tell you to go ahead in safe surroundings if you feel stable. You are very early days yet but my doctor told me yesterday to advance to FWB as tolerated and when safe. I will stay with the walker for some time yet because my leg adds another level of instability (and a feeling of insecurity) but with all the reading I have done on this forum people are really progressing at very different rates! Of course, make sure all carpets and possible other things a cane could get caught on are put away. Have a wonderful day!!

Let us know what the Doc has to say - sounds like you could be ready - good for you :)

Thanks @carriemay and @Poppet It's funny. I expected the transition to be, master the walker, move onto the crutch. But I'm jerky on the walker, smooth on the crutch

@muckingabout, a suggestion. Try using both the walker and the cane for three or four days before abandoning the walker all together. Use walker right out of bed and later in the day as you become tired and your posture may not be the best. Try the cane for middle of day scooting around. I think an easy transition time like that will usher you to cane use full-time without too much tweeking to muscles not yet awake.

Today my calves are more sore than usual but I doubled my calf raises yesterday so....good pain!!
