THR Mcane21's Recovery Thread

I have got my 2 week appointment tomorrow with my doc. Other than getting the stitches removed I guess I’ll tell him about the knee, hamstring pain. Obviously I’ll cop pain around these regions for some time due to weight bearing, muscle fatigue and healing. If anyone is reading this what’s generally a good time to start walking fairly comfortably? I’m 37 fairly healthy and have been recovering well I think.

Hi there @mcane21 and congrats!
Your age is your advantage and you will most definitely recover faster. Just be careful not to overdo it.
The muscle spasms in your thighs are normal. I had plenty of them all the time for the first 2.4 weeks and was told it's from muscles and nerves in the are waking up again. It's bothersome but will eventually go away. You are doing fine! good for you!

Walking is good and as others said don't overdo, easier said than done. That's the funny thing with walking, you're walking away from where you start and if you go too far the walk back is bad. I walked my road last time and had times where I was hanging on a fencepost trying to rest to get back home. I walk the track at the park in my town. It has benches and it's a small track. The other thing is to try and walk on flat ground. That's a tall order around here which is why I go to the track. The other walking trick early on is to use a shopping cart at a big store. It makes a great walker and you can really practice walking with good posture and gait.
You might not think it but the uphill downhill really taxes the muscles and easily strains them. I blew it last week and it took a couple of days to get over it.

Hello @mcane21 A happy weekend to you!

the funny thing with walking, you're walking away from where you start and if you go too far the walk back is bad.

So true are Eman's words and something to be mindful of. Build on baby steps.

The other walking trick early on is to use a shopping cart at a big store. It makes a great walker and you can really practice walking with good posture and gait.

I'm coining this frequently shared tip as Shopping Cart Therapy. :heehee:
Should I ever have my other hip replaced I'll add this to my list as I didn't like formal PT.

Best of luck with your appt. Let us know how it goes. If the spasms continue, you may want to look into supplementing with Magnesium for a time -

Magnesium supports the following:
Bone health
Healthy blood sugar
Cardiovascular health
Muscle relaxation and nerves
Promotes healthy sleep (falling asleep and staying asleep)

So glad I’m copping some great feedback on here! I think i have been considerably good with my recovery. I haven’t been trying to push limits as you all said it’s not a race it’s a marathon. And it’s only 2 weeks in. Flat ground is the only ground I have used although I used 4 stairs the other day very carefully. I will definitely let you all know how my progress is and post scar photos also for those interested. Sorry to not replying at you all individually I just like to summarise my blog in one. So, thankyou all so much :) I’ll post sometime later today/night for you all!

Happy Two Week Anniversary!
Glad to read you're doing well. Please no worries about responding to us individually. It's not necessary. We'll continue to read, offering support, advice and encouragement along the way. Thanks for sharing updates. Not only do we take joy in your progress, but it's inspirational to those following behind you.

Have a great weekend!

Far out when will this upper thigh muscle recover. Any tips on recovery for the muscle other than just being patient and rest lol. “Impatient little darn” I treated water for the first time yesterday felt nice walking on the soft sand, actually felt normal. Slowly but surely sigh

My quads went from Super Sore (felt like someone hung me up and used my thighs for punching bags) to Very Sore, then to Kind of Sore, then to Sensitive.
Over the course of months.
I love the seashore but it probably isn't your friend for walking right now.

Sand walking is actually tougher on recovering muscle/soft tissue than terra firma so you will feel it later.
The softer sand requires increased energy expenditure, forcing you to work harder compared to an even, firm surface. The foot also will sink slightly into the sand and will provide the least amount of stability, which forces you to use muscles in your legs more.
Not to mention the potential for twisting that leg.

Any tips on recovery for the muscle other than just being patient and rest lol.
Short answer, is no. Time, Rest, and Ice, Ice, Ice.:ice:
Hang in there, friend. Going too fast will make things slower to recover.

Sending good mojo your way :) :-) (:

Makes sense! Ice ice baby will be on high rotation the next few weeks! Take it easy is the only way to go ;) thanks!

I am an outdoor kind of person, and impatient also...but the investment of time will pay huge dividends.
I love this I borrowed from my fellow staffer, Roy Gardiner
When you are icing and elevating and watching telly you are not 'dossing around' you are 'engaging a carefully considered proactively designed heuristically programmed dynamically structured recovery programme'.
:heehee:

Where on your thigh? lots of muscles in there. If it's outer thigh it's IT band and walking on sand or uneven surfaces will make it hurt. Right now my soreness is at the rear and down the rear of my thigh. It's all just a slow process and the slightest thing makes them sore.

Just seeing if anyone on this thread actually runs after having a hip replacement? Would be interesting to see how many others still participate in sports. Please let me know how active most are that have surpassed the recovery period and are in full swing with sports/activities. Thanks!

@mcane21 you will notice that I have merged your two threads together as we prefer that members in recovery only have one thread.

This is for three reasons:
1. if you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts others have left you in the old threads
2. it often ends up that information is unnecessarily repeated
3. it's best if we can keep all your recovery story in one place so it's easily accessed if we need to advise you.

Please keep all your questions and updates on this thread. If you would like a new thread title just give a shout.

We have plenty of members who are back to sports of all kinds. Here's a couple links from our Library on success stories.

@Constanze is a member who was and is a runner.
Here is her thread

Also many members are back to their preferred sport/recreation.
I've never been a jogger or a runner but usually average 10,000 or more steps per day at work as it is a large spread out campus.
I hike and canoe and ride my ATV on the weekends.
Oh yeah, I also ran TWICE. So I CAN run...both were running Away.:running:

Hey @mcane21
I have been so shattered watching the devastating wildfires and have worried for our members Down Under.
Assuming you are safe and not in harm's way?
Don't need you having to check out your running skills quite yet!

Sadly, I have been watching, too. It seems far worse than the California fires we have so often. So much wildlife and their habitat killed, in addition to human suffering, in Australia. My family has been changing our food habits to have less impact on the plant, amongst other things.

Sounds like you are near water. Beach running? I have seen posts where some folks switch from tennis to pickle ball, from running to walking competitions, and some may still run. I am sure others will chime in soon.

Hi all, at the moment I’m quite close to kangaroo island but not in any danger. It’s so terrible. The koalas, roos and other wildlife just gone. Thanks for your concern. The entire world has helped out with funds and plenty of support. To those affected directly this would mean the absolute world to them. In other news my thigh muscle is getting better. Still quite numb in areas but I’m not rushing it. I’m walking with a limp and trying not to use the cane so much now. I might book to see a physio again today just to see how he thinks I’m travelling. Hope all is well my hippy friends!

You are going to do beautifully...just don't get too ambitious too soon, and you've got this.
As I said, my quads were sore for quite a long time.

I know I am not alone in the heartbreak for the loss of your country's unique wildlife....
Glad you are safe and, as with our own amazing healing bodies, hope nature restores and renews with time.
