May Marvelettes 2011 - Are You Having Hip Surgery In May?

Have any of you scheduled for late April and early May had pre ops yet? I have not been contacted by the surgeon's office or the hospital yet. Is it too late to donate my own blood at this point?

From the information we have received from our surgeon, the hospital will contact us for all pre-op steps we have to take, including giving your own blood. Their admittance booklet states that the process to donate your own blood takes about 3 weeks and should be initiated by the patient, via them. So I'm guessing you should call the hospital's orthopedic dep't and your OS right away.

Hope that helps.

Hi all !!! Just wanted to say that I just found this forum and do enjoy the information on here, Also wanted say I am looking forward to my second new hip surgery on the 20th of May if all goes well, had my first ( right hip ) on Feb 25th of this year and all has been going VERY well for me. I can't wait till it is over and I can do some of things I have not been able to do for over a year, I can't tell you how proud I will be to be able to take my grand kids fishing again something that I thought might never happen again last year ?? Sorry if this too long. Grandpa 101:yay:

Welcome, Grandpa!!! I'm glad you found BoneSmart and decided to join us. Your post is not long at all and I hope we get to hear more from you. It sounds like you're well on the way to enjoying all those things you want to do.

When I began this process I checked into giving my own blood as I knew you had to do it well before the surgery. I was told first it is rarely needed ( it think that is due to minimally invasive surgery) .... and it would cost me a small fortune to have it drawn and stored just for me, $1200.00 per bag:hate-shocked: Ohh, ok, if I need it, just give me whatever you have hanging around… I think they use frozen plasma now, if needed… I read that somewhere, maybe here…

dawnfair, in my pre-op class yesterday someone asked about giving their own blood. (a little late for that if surgery is coming up any day) and they were told yes they could, but that is rarely done anymore and like you said, it will cost you. Well you know what, I'm fine for having what ever is hanging around has well. Who needs another expense when this new hip is going to be a small fortune to begin with. That is one of the reasons I will be having the next one done this year since I'll have all of my 100% out of pocket already paid ($6,000!!!!) so better get it done so I don't have that expense next year. Best of luck to you with your May date!! Check for my up and coming posts in the "recovery" side.

Thanks Jamie and Josephine for the welcome :th_heehee:. My my there is a wealth of information here, once one gets started reading can't hardly turn this thing off, I do want to say I wish all that have had problems with their surgerys the very best in the future. I do know how (down) one can become when thing go bad !!! For years my personal Dr. told me I was not a candidate for hip surgery because I am over weight, I went to two different surgeons and was told no also. I was down to being in a wheel chair most of the time. To make a long story short I finally went to a new family Dr. and he referred me to this surgeon and I was on my way, had my first hip replaced in Feb / 2011 and and ten days after took a shower by my self for the first time in about two years, I am sooo excited about this next surgery I can't sleep at night, hope i am not hijacking this thread, if I am I am sorry ? Grampa 101

Grampa, I'm so glad you kept searching until you found the right doctors who were willing to help you!!!

Why don't you start a thread of your own and tell us more about yourself in the weeks leading up to your surgery? We'd love to get to know you better.

My surgery is booked for May 5th. Like everyone else, I'm excited and scared at the same time. I'm trying to keep myself busy with 'fun' things...on Tuesday, my sisters are taking me to get my hair cut (it's past my waist and I'm getting it cut short and donating my hair to Locks of Love), Wednesday is my pre op appointment and after it, I'm going to my friend's to have reflexology done and my toe nails cut. The Sunday before my surgery, I'm having the kids over for a family dinner.

I think I'm ready and have everything I need. My biggest concern right now is what to wear home from the hospital. I've bought a bunch of sundresses to wear post op, for ease of dressing, but with temps just above freezing still, and the occasional snow storm still, I could be a bit chilly!! lol

How short are you getting your hair cut? I imagine that It took you a long time to grow it out I'm sure someone will get some good use out of it. Congrats on May 5th the sooner the better.

Hi Shawn
I'm cutting off about 20-24" of hair. That should put it around chin length. It's been about 2 1/2 years since I've had it cut. Not because I wanted long hair, but because it's easier to throw it in a ponytail than it is to go to the hairdresser's! lol I live on a farm with horses, dogs, cats and donkeys and they really don't care what I look like, but with the surgery coming, the last thing I want to deal with is long hair getting in the way, and it does get in the way!

Hi Karen/BlueRoses
That's great that I have a twin, having surgery the same day!! Good luck! We'll have to compare notes after. Have you had your pre op appointment yet?
Karen

KarenJ....you are very wise to keep yourself busy with fun things to do between now and surgery date. Good for you! And I adore the Locks of Love donation! I've know a number of people who have made those donations and I know they are really appreciated.

Karen

Wow two feet of hair that is amazing. I think if I grew out my hair for 21/2 years it might grow six inches. I think pony tails are awsome and very attractive. I love it when my wife wears one, and by the way who cares what we look like animals or people!!! Happy easter.

Hiya, I have been for my pre op today and i have got my date for surgery 19th may.

I had my pre op appointment yesterday. The people at the hospital were great and everything went very smoothly. The anaesthetist I spoke with said they may be able to do the epidural, since it looks like my spinal fusion (from scoliosis) is up just high enough, but it will depend on which doctor I get and whether he feels he can do it. Otherwise, I will get the other anesthetic.

I also got my hair cut! It is now really, really short. After them telling me yesterday, that I can't have a shower until after the staples are out (10-14 days), I'm really glad that I'm not dealing with butt length hair!

A week from now, it will all be over....and just starting!

Good luck Karen. I'm sure you are glad about the hair. I was told that I can't until the 5th. It will be a glorious day :yahoo: I had the spinal and it probably was a lot easier than doing general. It did take until next day for me to having feeling in the surgical leg. All will go well for you !!
