Teacat I always use distilled water-- I'm terrified of the mold and junk that's in tap water and/or the water pipes. For salt-to-water ratio, my mother taught me as a child that it's "just enough salt that you can taste it a little". Doesn't need much. But I think having it warm is important, tho I can't remember why.

Littlejem, ByGosh, zauberflöte, and of course anyone else reading this...

Gargling with the salt water often provides temporary relief right away (though not always), but the real relief comes as your body's own immune system more quickly heals the throat because you have simplified its job by using the gargle.

The gargle also helps to remove plaque on your teeth (which causes gum disease) and helps heal mouth sores, all while being isotonic and therefore not irritating to your tissues. A salt water rinse before bed is helpful if you do not have a tooth brush or toothpaste.

I use 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon salt (I prefer the 3/4 tsp. Saltier water seems more effective at washing away thick mucus.) One cup of pure water, (Warm water may be more soothing, and dissolves the salt a little faster.) Chlorinated water may irritate your throat. Instead use water from a water filter. Chlorine may weaken the immune system.

It has been reported that you can dechlorinate tap water, if you leave chlorinated water out in a wide mouth container, in 24 hours the chlorine will have evaporated away, leaving chlorine-free water. I have never tried this, I have a water filter on my tap, but even a water filter jug is just as good providing the filter is not too old.

Bottled water, use it only if you must, since the plastic bottles (like all plastic) has been reported that they may contain hormone-disrupting and carcinogenic chemicals that migrate into the water. The very thin plastic bottles are the worst, try to avoid these, especially don't reuse those thin bottles.

Mix, Stir. Take as often as you wish, even every half hour. When sick, every three hours probably gives you the maximum benefit, though and when I feel unwell, this is about as frequent as I can tolerate. You can use it daily as a preventative, and especially when you feel a cold coming in, or if you think you might be catching something.

How to gargle: Put a little of the gargle in your mouth, tilt your head back and extend your tongue as you softly blow air up to agitate the gargle so it washes away the mucus. I gargle for about 30 seconds (if I can). Eventually, by doing it multiple times, I stop spitting out mucus (sorry for the graphic description :)) try to repeat every few hours.

It is the gentle bubbling agitation of the salt water in your throat that is removing the mucus.

@ Poppet You're good at this! It's like sitting in class. Very thorough explanations, I love it.

ByGosh, Teacat... why thank you ladies...

I am a registered, natural medicine practitioner.. and I study a lot and keep up with all the latest medical, remedial and natural medicine research.. I get at least 10 email alerts every day from various medical journals and skim through most of them! For example....

Because we are going into our winter, I am following with much interest the H7N9 AIV which is being reported as in the very early endemic stage... There has been a reported case of it moving from chicken to pig.. and is being studied vigorously, watching to see if it becomes human to human also because we have no vaccine for it! This is a brand new strain of the 'H' series and is a concern to me as hubby and I caught the Swine Flu a couple of years ago..

p.s. I have a database of this information :)

Now I know why my Mother always made us gargle salt water when we had sore throats. As a child I hated it.

Poppet may I come and join your school that you didn't know you were starting? You're a fantastic lecturer! As to de-chlorinating water, we used to use that method in the kids' fish tanks, and the fish didn't die, and chlorine kills fish, so ergo ipso facto hey presto nonny nonny-oh it must work LOL.
Drinking salted chicken/turkey broth makes my coughing looser, very nice effect if I'm sick.
That H7N9 is nasty-- I really hope all goes well with you and everyone exposed to it! :)

I think you need to start your own thread with all this useful information so it's easy for us to find later.:)
I agree! You're a great teacher.
And you certainly are serious about when you're retiring, arent you? Down to the last minute, almost. (60 x 1440 is.....)

Ok so I've been missing all the scientific stuff about the salt water gargle and all the benefits it brings!! I agree with the others Poppet you should start a thread with all your little tips like this, it'd be so helpful to everyone! :ok:
Teacat & zauberflöte What is a Neti Pot, I've never heard of it?? :what:
I've been to see my consultant today and he's very happy with all my progress, he measured my legs and he says my operated leg is a centremetre longer now which he will sort out when he does the other one. So now on to new hip number 2 hopefully in about 6 weeks, end of May beginning of June he will get his secretary to contact me and then we can agree on a date. In less than 2 months I should be arthritis pain free and on my way to the rest of my life!!! :happydance: I'll be just behind you zauberflöte!!!

Littlejem
A Neti Pot looks like a mini teapot that you fill with warm water (distilled or boiled and cooled down) and it comes with a salt solution that softens the water to get the ph neutral for your nasal passages. Basically, you insert the spout into one nostril and tilt your head at a 45 degree angle over a sink and the solution comes out the other nostril. It's a way to clear your sinuses without using drugs/medicine. It sounds weird and gross but it works like a charm!
Congrats on your good report! Hope you are not in too much pain with the other hip right now. Here's looking to an arthritis free future!

Littlejem Its wonderful that your hip no.1 is good and not long to wait for hip no.2 and to be rid of the bone on bone pain.
I agree that Poppet should have her own health advice thread as a reference guide
A neti pot is something else up in County Durham a netty is an old word for a toilet LOL

Was allowed to sleep on my side last night and had been really looking forward to it, what a let down! I ended up mostly on my back again,as rolling onto my side made me ache in my operated hip and leg, ah well, I will persist and I hope it's just that my body needs to get used to it again.

Teacat That neti pot sounds like a wonderful idea!! Ha Kim22 you wouldn't want to inhale that in would you?? :heehee:

Yes janet, that is something we all really look forward to then it is a great disappointment when it knacks the first few times.lol. Try having a little go every night for just a few minutes, increasing the time night by night. It does get better....a lot better, just take a bit of getting used to again. :)

Great news that your OS is happy with your progress, not long now till no2 and as you rightly say, your pain free new life.

Take care

Ann.x.

I had the same issue with the sleeping on the side - having looked forward to it so much. Even with starting the night with a pillow between my legs, if it comes out then the pain of the stretch on my operated hip wakes me. Although having said that, the pain has got gradually better over the weeks.

Littlejem Good report! You'll be sailing through your hip #2 surgery, just like this surgery!
Yes, the side sleeping is a little tricky still. It's the incision that I'm laying on. My PT showed me to use a small pillow, or a pillow roll and put it at the waistline, and side lay on it, that way the pressure is off of the hip. That and a pillow between the legs up @ the thighs, seemed to help. I also try a very very soft feather pillow that I tuck under the hip if I can't get the waist pillow just right. But no matter, each only gives a short time of sleep on the bad hip. The better hip is more cooperative.
But it has gotten better. Just takes time for everything to settle down.

And how's Henry? Is he going to work with you next week? :puppysmooze:

Thanks Elosarabrab, I had a pillow between my knees and was sleeping on my operated side, which is my favourite side but my OS has told me I can sleep on either so maybe I should try the other side tonight! :)
ByGosh If my 2nd surgery goes as well as the first I'd be very happy but I'm a worrier so now I'm thinking 'well you had a good one this time so no doubt the nest one will be bad!!! Stupid I know!!
I'll try that waistline pillow if I struggle again tonight, it's all worth a try and thanks for the tips, it's good to hear it does get better eventually!
Henry is good thanks, at the pub last night and we're looking after my daughters little doggie for the weekend so we had her with us....!! She's a yorkie crossbreed, so quite small, young and she luuuuves Henry, he tolerates her!! Yes he'll be at work with me next week for a couple of days, if I don't take him in now I'm asked 'where's Henry'!! Hey just realised your little doggie is back, you have 2 don't you, tell me something about them? I do so love my boy which I'm sure you can tell, he's curled up in his basket as I'm typing, fast asleep, that is until I rattle his bowl to feed him!! :puppysmooze:
