THR joining the sore butt crowd

Hey, Tom

I had my left hip done first and them went back eight weeks later and had the right one done. I carry my holster on the right side. My car is a Dodge charger and the seats are built for performance. It has narrow bucket seats. To make matters worse they installed a lap top computer in my car while I was off. The center console was crowed enough before I left. There was no room left on the right side of the console after they put the lap top in so they moved my flashlight to the left side. It is in the perfect position to rub the right side of my right knee ALL NIGHT LONG. I have been throwing the flashlight in the passenger seat as soon as I get to work. So now just the flashlight charger rubs my knee. It is a little more comfortable. Last year I found a H type harness called a "Back defender". It goes under your shirt and then hooks to your belt. When adjusted right it carries the weight of the gunbelt on your shoulders. This really helped a lot. With the Back defender you no longer have to crank your gun belt down on your waist to keep it from dragging your pants down. It was kind of pricey though, I think I paid $200 for it. I think all officers should wear it. www.backdefensesystems.com
It is well worth the money. As far as the Lt. pressuring me.....well it is only pressure if you care what he thinks, HA HA. But with your comments it sounds as if you have met him. He is one of those guys that is your best friend until he thinks you did something wrong and then he tries too nail your you know whats to the wall. Sounds like I am getting on my soap box see ya latter.

I see my post got edited to say naughty naughty naughty. I thought I cleaned it up pretty good before posted it. Ha Ha. Sorry about that. I will be more aware or sensitive eyes next time.:console:

Hi okie, wow your police work vehicle sounds busy with what my hubby would call 'toys'... Hopefully it will get a bit more comfortable for you regarding the pressure on your incision. It is Friday night here (late)so not long and hopefully your first week back on the force is coming to an end.. one more night for you is it? xx

It is 5:20 in the morning and I have to work until 7:00 so not much longer now. We work 4 ten hour days so the three day weekend starts in a couple of hours.

Wahoo!! I am pleased for you that the week is coming to an end... Ten hour days are killers, I am doing those at the moment! We have heaps of pressure going on in Govt jobs.. very stressful times here...

Are you still working at the security job?

Yes, but not getting too many hours lately. I worked superbowl sunday all night and don't work it again until the 17th. I took a small pillow to work with me tonight and put it in the car seat. It raised my backside up just enough that my hips don't touch the side contours of the seat anymore. It feels much better. I still need to go to the police supply and find a holster that has a differnt angle so it turns forward a little more instead of straight down my leg. That would take the pressure off of the scar tissue.

Hopefully you can sort your firearm holster out next week... Do you guys use Taisers (to stun)?

Yes we have tazers now. Seems like they add something new to put on the belt every couple of years. I got on the scales the other night in full uniform. Not going to give the actual number but the full uniform weight about 30 pounds.

It is a pity you need all that protection to carry around... Sometimes it is not a nice world out there and you get to see the worse in people I guess, so better you do have all the gear... are you in the car now?

yep, but heading to the station to turn in paperwork and call it a day. time to go nighty night soon:sleep:

Enjoy your three days off okie:)

Hey Okie,
I just joined this forum and haven't read to many posts. Yours stuck out because I to have an extremely itchy back and I'm sweating like a hog in the night??????
I went in Monday 4:00 for THR and everything went well. Released and home by Wednesday morning. I actually walked with a cane today outside. My leg and butt cheek are swollen, but seems to be getting better each day. Everything seems to be going as expected. My concerns lie in what my limitations will be going forward. I seem to get different answers on what I can or can't do once I'm fully healed.

Welcome textile guy, I am sure one of the moderators or Okie will answer you concerns soon... just wanted to say how great it is that you have joined the BS family :thumb:

Calling okie.... hello, hello :thumb:

Hello Textile Guy, welcome to BoneSmart.

To answer your question about what your limits will be why don't you start to read in the Library. The first thread I think you should spend time on is Stories of amazing THR recoveries. The short answer is there are very few limits once your restrictions are lifted. My only restrictions were no bungee jumping or parachuting! Basically I can do what I want and I am not at all limited by my new hip.

Why don't you start your own thread and give us a bit more background about your situation? I am sure others will join in with their input as well.

Hello textile guy,

Life is busy again after having my hips replaced so I don't have the time to get on here like I use to. I HATED the itchy back. I am pretty sure mine was from the Morphine in the spinal during surgery. They told me they pumped it in the spinal before they took it out. That lasted about 4 or 5 days. The sweating was from the Morphine and the pain med Norco. I was supposed to take 1 or 2 very 4 hours. But I broke mine in half (with the doctors approval) and took half every 3 hours. This helped with the sweating and the upset tummy.

Swelling ..... My in home physical therapist said it look like I shoplifted a beach ball and hid it in my back pocket. My left butt cheek was HUGE. But (no pun intended) after about 2 or 3 weeks it started going down. Which in one way was a bad thing. After the swelling went down I could feel the prosthetic when I laid in my side. That too has improved a lot.

My OS said that high impact sports will be out of the question for my future. Like singles tennis, sky diving, or cross country running. I never did any of those things any way. Next to hunting and fishing my favorite sport is being a first class couch potato, when the wife will let me. I kind of do what I want now.

I think I am about 14 weeks post op from the second surgery and about 22 weeks from the first. I am back to full duty at work, both jobs. I am able to work outside around the house, drive my tractor and most any thing I want. Things that include bending over and lifting heavy items still make me sore but I have a strong 17 year old son to help with that. If he isn't around there's always the tractor again. Yesterday I used the rototiller and tilled the whole garden and it didn't bother me at all. We all heal differently and at different rates so just listen to your body, it will tell you what not to do.

okie, trust me - there is no way on this earth that you can feel the prosthesis. It's much too deep and covered by great thick muscles. What you felt was swollen tissues, that's all. It can feel like a rock when it's really swollen.

Yep I can relate to swollen tissues.. Each night I alternate, ice/heat... helps a lot

Hey Okie

Nice to hear from you :)

Hello everyone, just checking in. Nothing new, just working the over night shift at the power planet. It has been a busy week. Woking both jobs this week and had court a couple days. Wife and I took a 2 hour drive and came home with a new (to us) car. She loves it. We have been busy getting the garden ready for spring planting. My mother in law planted leaf lettuce today and is planting potatoes next weekend. I only got 2 hours sleep Thursday night and then went to get the car Friday. When I came home I had to leave again for my second job and worked it all night. I got about 5 hours sleep this morning before it was time to got to my daughters piano recital. When we got home I had a few chores to do and then back to work again. I get off at 5:00 in the morning and that gives me about 3 hours for a nap before it is time to go to church. Lucky for me I have no plans after that. My son will be at work and my daughter is going out of town for a trip to the Oklahoma Youth Expo. She will not be back until Tuesday night but I will most likely be at work when she gets home. So basically life is back to normal. This is about how my daily routine was before surgery.
