THR joining the sore butt crowd

I think I have found a way to adjust myself to the pain meds. Prescription says one or two every four hours as needed. I have cut them in half and take half every three to five hours. I don't seem to have the sweats from being on and then off them, and I try to eat a bigger meal with them to avoid the sick tummy. Still have the disconnected feeling but not as bad. Physical therapist came today she said I was doing good and said the doctor may be able to take me off the walker when I see him next Monday. She suggested switching to a cane. She also said not to make any changes until the OS says to. The covering on the surgery area is strange. It looks like a wax or palstic type seal that covers a 4 inch by 9 inch area. The incision runs horizontal about 4 inches or so below my waist line. I was thinking it would be vertical on my side. I guess I never really asked.

Hi okie, so pleased you are doing so well. Girl from OZ is sending healing vibes.

Girl from OZ must be awsome because it is woking great. My nurse came today and the PT comes tomorrow. I can say that as far as my left hip is conscerned I am in less pain now that I was 8 days ago before surgery. The first three or four days were no picnic but I can see progress every single day. I feel kind of proud because two family members have said that I am walking better and the surgery wasn't but 7 days ago. But I do remind myself all day long that I have to be careful. I mean, I am doing this for a better quality of life and I don't want to screw it up.

Fantastic okie

Happy to keep sending those healing vibes... Just imagine little bursts of healing energy releasing all through your hip, leg and body.. The universe is on your side (and so is the girl from OZ) :friends:

Busy day today,
I checked on the animals (we hace chickens, donkeys and dogs) then came in for breakfast. The wife and kids were out of school for some reason. Then my daughter and I went down to my shop and started cleaning. I had my walker with me and used my cane constantly. My daughter made sure that I used my reacher/grabber and that I did not pick up anything over 10 pounds. We stayed busy on that for about 4 to 5 hours and then it was time to get cleaned up for the physical therapy lady. She was very proud of my progress and released me from home health therapy. This is good and bad. Now I will have to find a way to town for therapy. She said she would see if my doctor could release my driving restriction. After she left I took the family (plus teenage son's girlfriend) out to eat. We made a couple more stops before coming home. By the time we got home I was ready for a place to sit down and a pain pill.

Glad you are getting out and about Okie but that's certainly a lot of activity for so early out of surgery. Easy does it ! Hope you can rest today!

Thought I would see what's up on the forums before going to bed. I go in for my first post op visit with the OS in the morning. He told me to use the walker for 6 weeks but I have been walking so good I haven't used it in 2 or 3 days. I hope he doesn't get mad when I walk in using only a cane.

I think your OS will be delighted that you have progressed so far in such a short time. Please let us know how your appointment goes!

Quite so! His words were only a recommendation not an order! Well done you!

Well I didn't get a spanking for not using the walker. He just laughed and said that I was doing just what he thought I would. He took the dressing off with the tenderness of any surgeon (grabbed the edge and ripped it off like tape on a hairy arm). He was pleased with the progress and wants me to come back in a month. Then he will take xrays and make a decision about the right hip. A month is a little longer than I wanted to wait. I have a call into his nurse to see if I can be released to work a little part time at my second job in a couple of weeks. It is not hard, I just sit in a security shack and scan their employee cards to show they are on the property. All the riding in a car today made me kind of sore though. But the good thing was my Dad took me to the OS so we got to spend the day together. We are both so busy that we do not get much time together.

Sounds like your appointment went very well!

I wouldn't rush back to work too soon. Still very early days. Even if your job is just sitting - sitting for long periods can be very hard for new hippies.

:hysterical: Boy, can I ever relate to that!!!

Sounds like you're doing really well. Keep up the great recovery.

I haven't posted in a while but things are still going great. I haven't had any pain meds since yesterday morning and that was only half a pill. I am still working around the house and in my work shop some. My wife came home Friday and found me on the 6 foot step ladder. She wasn't happy but she got over it quick. I go back to the OS on the16th for post op xrays. He wants to see how the new hip is healing and look at the right hip. He will decide then if I get to start all over with the second hip replacement. I will beg him if I need to. I can feel the old hip trying to give out when walking up steps or up hill. It feels like the left hip did about 10 to 14 months ago. To think about if he does the second hip I will be in great shape by some time in January. I get excited just thinking about it. It will be a big let down if he says I have to wait. I don't want to go through the months of pain with my right hip like I did with my left one. Oh well, nothing to do but hope for the best.

I almost forgot. I haven't even used my cane in a couple of days. I am starting to feel like I need it for the other hip now though.

I'm so glad to hear that your new hip is doing so well. If you feel like the best thing for you is to have your other hip done, keep the pressure on your surgeon to do so for you. Be sure you detail all the problems, pain and accommodations you must do with it. He'll eventually get the message.

Good advice Jamie, #1 for me Monday and will be asking about #2 whilst I have the OS captured in hospital. That's my strategy.... Go okie on the 16th :)

Good luck with your appointment okie. I agree - don't let that second hip get to that horrid bone on bone stage. Get it done and get on with life!

Please let us know how it goes!

I saw the OS today, he seemed amazed that the bone was absorbing into the new hip socket so well. He said he knows that I will need the other hip done some day and acted like he wanted to put it off for a while. I told him that the nonsurgery hip feels like the other one did about a year ago. I told him it doesn't hurt all the time and it does not limit me too much yet but it does get very weak and unsteady if I am on my feet for an hour or so. He then asked when I wanted the surgery and I said "NOW". So in the morning some time his nurse is going to call me with a surgey date for my second hip replacement. My wife wanted me to ask for an approximate date of returning to work full duty but I was excited and forgot. Maybe the nurse will tell me. The OS did say that in most of his patients they complain of having more pain after the second surgey than the first. I can't wait for the phone to ring!

Wow - you are really going for it Okie! Please let us know what you hear about #2.
