Happy Friday Rich,

Hope your in good spirits today and getting ready for a lovely weekend. Yes taking the pain pills on a regular basis definitely helps ease you back into "normal" I think it gives the body time to heal.

Rich huge request would you mind creating your signature line in your profile and put int he date of your surgery please. Here's the link that gives instructions.

xxooxx

Hey Rich..You can elevate your leg with pillows while in the recliner, thats what I did. I wouldnt try the couch if its too squishy, way too hard to get out of!Lots and lots and lots of ice is also a good thing:thumb:

Congrats on the cane!

Your sounding sooo positive, its really a good thing to hear...Keep it up:biggrin:

Oh and here is a pic of a 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8-470 HP V-8 Hemi!!

Keep plugging along and you will keep improving. I found improvement to be pretty steady and quick the first month or so, and then it slowed down a bit after that. Seeing steady improvement so quickly kept me positive and motivated.

And, definitely take the pain medications you need in order to do what you need to do for your hip. You need to be comfortable enough to walk and do your exercises. That's how things get better.

Keep up the fine work!!!

Dorothy

Hey Rich glad to hear how well you are doing and what a great attitude you have. Keep taking the meds adn remember to ice and elevate

Hi Rich, been a while since I dropped by.... My what progress you have made on all fronts... I am so thrilled for you... Keep it going buddy..

p.s. My first car was a pale blue two door charger... I lived out of town and had a ten k straight road on the edge of a pine forrest as my personal race track... and boy did I wind my super charger up... it was great fun..

Keep up the great progress Rich, you are doing just great :)

Hugs xx

Getting in & out of bed Is something you learn how to do . First getting into bed , sit on the edge as close to the pillows as you can get your bottom . Using your arms slowly pull your legs so they are coming onto the bed , put a pillow between your legs & pull some more . I had most of my pain getting my leg into bed until I started to get more strength in my arms . Just don't try to bend it just pull yourself onto the bed . Getting out just slide to the edge & slowly lower your legs over the edge . You have crying fits as a result of pain pills & trauma to your system . For someone who went out to eat the other night , what's with that . Today I didn't have the energy to go to the store with my husband & son & my surgery was April 2 . Stop trying so hard , & for goodness sake think positive , you will heal , it will get better , consider the alternative , you are alive !!!

Hi Rich

regarding getting your operated leg in and out of bed.. Here is my tip that I was showed by the PT at the hospital. She used a rolled up towel, but I found it wasn't long enough, so John suggested I use the belt off my dressing gown.

I backed up to the bed, sat down and brought my unoperated leg onto the bed without twisting and hooked the dressing gown belt (which is soft) around my operated foot and keeping it straight, I raised the operated leg onto the bed. The trick was to get my bottom as far back onto the bed as possible.

I did the reverse getting it off the bed.. it is important to keep your leg straight, this is what helps.

Just a thought.

I know with your PTSD it is hard for You to remain positive, that is a symptom of PTSD, but you are doing fine so far and I think you have come such a long way already in your thought patterns... well done Navy Boy

alternatively, you could treat yourself to a leg lifter - also sometimes called an "invisible dog lead"!

The other night i was able to get in and out bed of with NO PAIN at all i was pretty impressed with myself, because everytime previous to this i struggled with that aspect of my recovery, anyway the other day i switched from using a walker to using a cane and im moving right along with no problems whatosoever , i tried using my cane get in bed and it was to painful that it brought tears to my eyes maybe i no longer need help to get into or out of bed because i proved i can do it on my own, i think my recovery is moving along very well im not that handicapped person i thought i was, im pretty mobile, howevr im not getting ahead of myself, lots of rest i slept the day away on Friday i must have needed the rest otherwise i doubt i would have done such a thing._

Tonight was the FIRST TIME in almost 27 hrs that i have taken any pains ( tonight i took 2 ) i simlpy have not needed them at all, tonight i took the two because i was sore from walking around the house to get clothes together for an appt in the morning anyway is that a good sign that my wound/ incision area healing nicely , im taking this as a sign of my recovery is going smoothly like i mentioned i have NO PAIN, i know alot of great people won't stear me wrong, what are your thoughts,if any.

What ever your appointment is for in the morning it would be a good idea to take a pain pill before you go to it - there will be more walking and exertion than you're use to getting to and from the appointment - and pain meds work best if you stay a head of the pain rather than taking them only when you hurt - that's playing "catch up". Jo's article on pain management is a terrific one!

Rich, I'd say your recovery is coming along very well. As for getting in and out of bed, just do it whatever way works best for you. Things like that will keep getting easier as time goes by.

I'm glad to hear you slept so much on Friday. Resting like that is when your body heals the best. When you're up and around, your body's energy can be diverted to your activity. When you're resting....all that energy is going to rebuilding your tissues and bones. So, don't feel at all guilty about sleeping whenever you can!

jamie im not sure if you've read my posting about how i have taken a pain med in over 27 hrs is that a good thing afterall if im not takin the pain meds clearly im in no pain, or should i be taking tem because the pain could flcuate not to such a drastic measure would it-- im curious, im also getting around on the cane no problms at all.

Is is a good thing if you're not experiencing any pain, Rich. And if that's really the case (no stiffness, no discomfort) then it's certainly fine to cut back or stop taking them. Pain levels can fluctuate based on a number of things.....especially on your activity level.

So, as you heal and become more active, you may find that you need to take something for some discomfort you may feel. It could be prescription pain meds or our BoneSmart Cocktail. If you prefer to use prescription pain meds, you can break them in half also if you find you don't need a full dose. A lot of people do that when they are tapering off the prescription pain meds.

It was wierd because i actually had to think about when the last time i took my last dose of oxy and i didn know and thats when i figured out that my pain level is low or so low that its not bothering me, but im not stupid eithr im not going to get rid of them either because who knows if i start to feel pain again , i know tylenol and ibuprofin just doesn't work for me however for a long time aleve used to do the trick and now its like eating skittles...yummy yummy yummy.

Thats great if you dont need any pain meds, just remember though you dont want to play catch up.

I agree with Deb-I would take something before you left, just in case.

I actually took two around 7:30 this morning just in case and precisely like you said, i dont want to be stuck and in pain, plus you're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT i dont want to play catch up, it didnt even dawn on me thats what i'd be doing and i but that can be awful, i dont know if i mentioned it yet, but i no longer have any quad pain at all thats where the source of my immidiate pain was coming from right away whenever i would stand up, its totally gone, im moving right along each day im surprising myslf a little more, its nice to see my progress.

No more quad pain- thats great to hear and we all are happy to read about your progress as well!!

Its wonderful to hear you so positive and happy:biggrin:

I am a pretty happy guy overall but this whole operation and the weeks leading up to it really took a toll on me but now thats overwith and im dealing the best part of it i can relax and not feel so stressed out, i think the main reason i was so overwhelmed is because i had to reliquish ALL CONTROL and that scared me so much however this thursdy i go back to see the surgeon to have the staples removed and im hitting him with $64,000 question " can we talk about my left hip now" keep in mind this is the surgeon who didnt want to do the surgery as a result of my age...can you imagine like its my fault my right hip is down or was down to the bone im realy curious to see what he has to say about my left hip afterall he's already seen the left one its down to the bone and arthritic it should be interesting, wish me luck i hope i have good news to share with all of you.

Careful with the aleve and ibuprofen. My OS does not allow them as he uses the cementless hips that need bone to grow around them to form a good attachment. He's allowing me tylenol and oxycodone/hydrocodone but no NSAID's

Here is a link to the study about the NSAID issue.
