Im not a good dancer so i'm all set in that category , early recovery real arly recovery has proven to me if i dont slow down and smell the roses my hip absolutely will, i dont want to experience that again.

On another note, i apoligized to my wife for being so needy, especially when i don't mean to be, i know she means well but she has a life of her own and when i become clingy and over deendent i think it pushes her away, i love her to much to be smothering, just trying to be aware of my behavior, thats all.

Hi Rich,

It's really great to hear you sounding more positive. When we hit rock bottom the only way is up and it seems you are finally on ya way up.yippee.

Well done for moving on the cane, you will feel a little more independant using that, just try to not overdo it too much and continue to get plenty of rest.

Take care

Ann

Hi Annie, I am doing pretty good i guess i was in a whirlwind of emotions and it hit me all at once not a nice feeling thats for sure, im looking forward to the cane and yes lots of rest indeed i did nothing besides relax on my chair.

Rich, I have to say, don't worry about being needy to your wife. That's what marriage is all about.
tbh, I'd give anything for a man to fuss over. She's a lucky lady!

But c'mon - you haven't told us what kind of car that is. I'm rather into things like the Ford Cosworth 500, myself!
Bit old hat now (1990s) but still smooooooth lookin'!

[Bonesmart.org] I am so sore but grateful I had the surgery

Where are all my BS friends, i went out today with my wife for about an hour and bought a cane, its a pretty nice one i have to say,you know know what im finding amazing that when you stay on a schedule taking your pain meds how much it really effects your mood in such a positive way, your outlook ...because i've always believed ....That when you change the way you look at things the way you look at things change ! !

Glad you have discovered that keeping your pain at bay makes this kind of difference. It does!

Obviously i had to go through a little discomfort before i realized the advice i was getting was legit but also from the heart, i was never easy to get throug to,....hee hee hee

You got there....it's all that counts.

You know i just realized the progress i have been making, the first time i used the walker it was the day after surgery, i was real apprehensive and afraid i'd fall and as each day would go by i got better and better with the walker and i got to the point where i was walking right along as though i'd been using it without a problem, now i'm using a cane and when i started using that i was NOT apprehensive in any way at all, i wonder why that is, i wonder why im using the cane like i have ALWAYS used it, makes me stop and think thats for sure..! !

I have a question, my leg is pretty swollen , almost abnormally swollen and i was wondering , how long does it take for the swelling to go down and does pain meds help with swelling..? ?

The swelling can last for a while Rich - it varies from person to person. My swelling in both legs lasted for about 3 weeks but was gradually decreasing during that time. Pain meds don't really help with the swelling - but elevating the leg, ice, and rest does. Also gentle exercise helps as well. And the swelling can seem really dramatic - like your leg is swelled up like an over filled balloon - but that really is normal after major surgery.

Deb i have been using a recliner since getting out of the hospital...April 10 th...can i recline the chair enough so i can elevate my leg or will that break the 90 degree rule..?

Try it out Rich - it probably won't break the 90 degree rule - but depending on the type of recliner it is it may not get your toes above nose as is recommended for optimum elevation. Lying on the bed or couch with multiple pillows under your leg so it is supported at a slant and gets the foot up over the level of your head might work better. Hopefully you have a recliner that closes with a lever or by electricity - the ones you have to slam shut with your lower legs are not good for new hips. I was lucky to have a hospital bed I rented after my surgery and spent a lot of time with the foot of the bed elevated so my legs were well supported and also elevated properly - I even slept with the foot of the bed elevated for about a month - made sleeping on my back more tolerable for me.

I cant afford to take the chance with my couch as it sits really low and when you sit on it, it sinks big time, plus im afraid if i sit on that couch position myself i may never get up.

Hi Rich, sounds like you are making major progress! Well done!

Here's a thread from the Library about how to elevate without breaking any restrictions. Most recliners do not violate the 90 degree rule. Just take a look at Jo's descriptions.

Are you still icing and elevating that leg? Swelling will continue to decrease on its own but icing and elevating will help it along. Sometimes activity brings on the swelling so don't worry. All a part of recovery.

You have come a long way my friend!

I have a pretty spiffy cane Jaycey, i was getting nervous about the swelling but im not anymore its all a part of the process, im glad i ask lots of questions...!!

Hey - a jazzy cane is one of the good parts of this recovery!

Agree with your comment about your sofa. Don't try any soft furniture at this point. You will get "stuck" and the struggle to get up might be painful.

Keep those questions coming Rich!

My wife is ia blown away and impressed at how far I've come in just nine days, i dont see the progress but my family sure does, i remember trying to use the walker boy was i scared, now im using a cane without a problem.
