Rich.....are you taking your pain meds on schedule like you should be?

You are only one week out from surgery. You should be doing a lot of resting with your leg elevated and iced. You should be taking pain medications on a regular schedule unless you really don't have any pain, discomfort, stiffness or swelling. You should be napping and sleeping as much as possible. You should be getting up for short periods to do a little activity like walking from room to room or maybe a short sit outside or at the computer.

Did you print out this thread I gave you from the library so you would have it to look at? Jo has given you guidelines for each week.

That sounds nice but im already doing PT and i cant understand why that is,ive heard people not doing PT until at least 5-6 so who knows, as far as the taking my pain meds i should be taking them every 4 hrs but i dont and honestly i dont know wy that is either, i try to take naps but all i do nod off for maybe 5 minutes and im wide awake again.,i di have aches and discomfort but no pain or stifness.

My chair in the living room reclines i have used this chair since i was released from the hospital therefore in order to elevate my leg can i recline the chair, or would i be breaking the 90 degree rule..??

Rich,
Please try to take your meds EVERY 4 hours and REST REST REST. I didn't do PT for 9 WEEKS and I was running 3 miles at 7 months post-op BOTH times!!! Relax on the PT, REST and TAKE MEDS!!!
xoxoxo,
Linda.

I used a recliner both recoveries. Reclining back shouldnt break 90 degrees, just careful when you get up like any other place you sit.

Rich,
This is your recovery. You own it. On this board one can see many different styles of recovery from hip replacement. PT, no PT, pain meds, no pain meds, active athlete, couch potato, stoic, everything hurts. We all choose our style and whether we follow the advice of our doctor and physical therapist.
In the end, about 8 weeks or so, the result will be the same. Most of us will have hips that work and don't hurt. How you get there is your choice. Best wishes for a smooth recovery.

Hi rich, I am still pulling for you. Maybe a strange question but do you have an iPod? The reason I ask is that there are some free meditations out there on iTunes that might help you relax. You can listen on the computer too. Let me know if that interests you and I will let you know where to find them. I think you do need an iTunes account even though they are free.

Hope today is a good day for you. Hang in there and be gentle with yourself. -cathy

I wish i could stay away from PT as im a veteran and the VA wants me to do PT so i basically have to, i know i have a choice but this PT guy is a real nice guy and he doesnt push me or force me to do anything im not comfortable with.

Hello rich

i have just been catching up with your recovery thread.

I said you would come through the op ok - and you have. Brillaint news.

Please remember the wise words of all your friends here - the recovery is not necessarily straight forward - for some it is , others less so. For all it it is a marathon not a sprint and there will be some good days and some not so good... but in the end it will all be really worth while.

Hang in there and don't get down hearted. We have all been there to some degree and know what youe are feeling.

regards

Dave

Todays been a better day, pain meds on board and on time, i guess im entitled to a lousy day , thats what they call recovery my physical therapist thinks i should try a cane, i feel pretty good, i tried it out today when he came over, it wasn't so bad i caught right on like an ole pro...:dancy:

Good for you!!! I'm glad you are seeing the difference with taking those pain meds on a set schedule. It really does make things easier in these early weeks.

Sorry about the attitude yesterday i can be pretty intense but anyway, how are you doing Jamie, hows things going, did you notice ive advanced to a cane , im pretty excited this way i can get around a litte quicker.

Pain can make even the sweetest person cranky. We see it all the time, Rich, so it's no biggie.

Yes, I did notice that you were sporting a dapper cane now. Good for you. Don't go racin' around too much now.....remember you're still early, early, early in recovery.
